In this video:
Before a story about toys, before monsters went corporate, before anyone went searching for Nemo, and before twenty seven Academy Awards, Pixar was a high-end computer hardware company whose clients included the government and the medical community. The story of Pixar isn’t exactly full of superheroes, adorable robots, or talking bugs. The tale of the most profitable and critically adored animation studio in the history of the world (yes, by sheer gross numbers, more so than Disney) is one filled with financial difficulties, fired Apple employees, digital printers, and an animated left hand. And it all started with a Mormon graduate student at the University of Utah.

Another quick fun fact. There was a Super Nintendo game called Uniracers which had unicycles racing around a kind of psychedelic raceway. Pixar sued the creators claiming that the art style of the unicycles was too similar to their animation style. The court sided with Pixar and the game was taken off the market.

Jobs wasn’t good at marketing. The man’s only sales pitch was “I’m a genius because I say I am, now give me money.” - The fact people weren’t able to see through the man’s towering, unwarranted ego and his hollow self-aggrandizement didn’t mean he was a genius, it’s simply a testament to the extreme gullibility of people. Calling him a cunt is an insult to cunts.

Also got to thank Catmull for open sourcing some algorithms that could have stayed proprietary. Pretty much all 3D software out there uses that stuff now. And although the Renderman render engine remains proprietary, it's also available to use for free for non-commmercial use. That's pretty cool, and something that's not usually expected of somebody in that position.

Hi man, I thought this was a really good video, but the advertising in the middle breaks up the flow of the narrative, and I am sure it would be greatly appreciated by your whole community if you stuck with putting advertisements at the end of the video. I understand you have to make money, but please don't sacrifice your content, furthermore putting the ad in the video, just pisses us off, makes us less likely to buy the product and forces us to faff around with the +10s button for a minute.

Juan Davila The problem with that is sponsors want ads in the middle of the video so u don't skip through it as easily. And I don't understand why people are complaining a 2 minute add to support the great content is fine by me.

cuz people watch videos for the content, not the ads, if i was forced to watch a 2min ad before every single video, i would stop watching altogether, because it's not fucking worth it. and how do you not skip through it as easily? there's no timestamp when the ad ends at the begining, so how is skipping in the middle any different from skipping in the begining?

Yo man, what's up, I just explained my point of view, like I said the video was great, but I feel like putting the ad in the middle diminished the work, how would it feel if you are reading a book (to extend upon your simile) and the middle chapter is a story about how much Jim enjoys his big mac. Wouldn't you think that is better suited at the end? Sure I get he has to make more, but I was wondering whether there was a better way to do things. Then you think that my petition shows entitlement, why is suggesting an improvement to something I like being entitled, its not like I demanded he change what he was doing, I just expressed a point of view, one which I thought to be relatively harmless,... Ya know what man, you didn't take the time to write a response to me so I wont either, I was trying to see what you meant, reason with your points and make an argument, but it turns out you have just copy pasted your reply and sent it to everyone who complained about the ad, you say that I haven't read a book in years, well I wonder weather you have bothered to read my comment past the first sentence before deciding to reply... and to say that I have ADHD when you don't have the atention span to even tailor your reply to the comment, simply appalling... (PS whatever I wrote before realising what you were doing is staying, unlike you I put thought into my words and wouldn't want it to go to waste).

"how would it feel if you are reading a book (to extend upon your simile) and the middle chapter is a story about how much Jim enjoys his big mac." Your simile doesn't fit because I probably paid for that book, but I didn't pay for this video, thus the advertisement. If I got a free pamphlet from someone and it had an ad in the middle of it, I would be as bothered as the ad in the middle of this video. Now, if I was watching this on youtube red and it had that ad, *then* I'd be rightly annoyed by it being there.

Hey TIFO team, I'm not a big fan of the commercial-center format. I respect your right to add them, but be aware I tend to lose focus and forget what the video was about in the first place. This is somewhat counter productive to your cause. I know channels like Linus Tech Tips can get away with murder when it comes to commercials in YT content but technically even his base content is selling something most of the time. There is a difference between what he does and you guys. I'm not trying to complain or rant here. I have a simple suggestion. Do your commercials like your content. Start with something interesting and edit out all of the unnecessary bits. I imagine there are a few talking points the advertisers require. Honestly, think about it. The requirements were created as a compromise by a bunch of suits in a meeting. If you create something interesting, entertaining, and/or effective the 'rules' will get tossed in a hurry. Your targeting a next generation audience here. People are not responding to old style advertising in general. The only way to make a real impression is to keep it within the 8-12 second modern attention span if you want to leave a positive impression. Anything beyond that is counter productive unless you possess something remarkable. You can either keep it ultra simple, short, and repetitive over the long term, or short and interesting. However you do it, the content needs to avoid that cringing emotion most people have with these commercials on most channels. I recommend you do something short, unique, and interesting every time. Something like,... On xxxx/xx/xx JoeShmo logged into his laptop and noticed he kept getting ads for family law attorneys. After looking into his browsers history he found out about his wife's affair. If JillShmo had used a VPN Joe wouldn't see these tracking ads. ... Something interesting instead of 'listen to the same basic spiel again and again'/'do it because it supports us'/'do it because we do it.' No offence intended, I'm just saying these methods don't fit the content/audience very well IMO. I came for interesting, keep it interesting. -Jake.

I feel really sorry to say this because I enjoy the show and I'm happy to support it by watching ads and listening to sponsorships (and buying a product that sounds interesting), but I'm going to unsubscribe and stop watching altogether if you keep placing these sponsors in the middle of the video. Some channels like Philip DeFranco can do it between his stories, but since you just have one long story, it completely derails the pacing. By the time you got back to Pixar, I completely forgot where the story left off and I just lost interest. And yes, I actually listened to the sponsor instead of skipping forward. (This issue was compounded by the additional midroll ad I got watching the Man in the Iron Mask video.) Like I said, I really want to be a good supporter but it just doesn't work for the format you currently have. My best suggestion is to put it before your "bonus fact", since that's at least a tangent from the main topic. I hope you'll listen to us because there are a LOT of people asking this to stop.

Great work. Very well articulated and informative. A lot of work must have been done to research all the facts and figures and its certainly given me a different view of Jobs. To those who worry about the TunnelBear ad in the middle, I prefer this approach because I can use the power of my mouse to simply skip forward! One thing I did think was missing was some actual graphics to show some of the points of discussion e.g. the BSD demon, the animated hand etc. It would have been perfect to have had either an embedded short video of the hand or at least an image of the graphic that you mentioned in the video so I didnt need to go looking for them after. It would have helped the flow and given me something to look at whilst you narrate.

1. People install adblock to get rid of annoying youtube ads...especially the minute long unskippable ones. 2. Content creators put ads in the video themselves. 3. They want more so they put it in the middle of the video, breaking up the flow of the video, angering the viewers and ruining entirely for some, might have been an enjoyable video. 4. People then return to TV and leave youtube altogether because. If we are gonna be forced to 'get an ad' i'll just go back to the TV. 5. Content Creators die out and don't learn their lesson. NOTE: People don't mind ads at the begining or the end because it does not interupt the video. Linus Tech Tips does that well enough plus, some videos can be sponsered content itself which means the entire video can work as an ad if done properly. my 2cents: Keep it at the begining or end for in-video ads, having them in the middle interuppts videos. unsubbing since i don't want more of that, going to look for channels that keep their ads to the begining/end respectively. THOSE ads are worth watching for me.

But, like many other commenters, not a fan of the mid-video ad. Of course it's not hard to skip past, so unfortunately for the sponsor, this format does not work either. All it's going to do is piss people off and break the flow of the video, so the message isn't as effective.

it should be MY prerogative to skip an ad, not have it forced upon me, especially when it disrupts the flow of the video, and the subtitles get all screwed up...then Simon is talking about Tunnelbear, but the subtitles are going on with the featured video...

I never EVER comment on the KZbin videos I watch daily, but perhaps that makes it clear how much I truly hate the sponsor ad in the middle of this video. I, like many people, pay KZbin good money for KZbin red so that I don't have to sit through infuriating stuff like that. I for one will probably unsubscribe from the channel if there are many more disruptions like that and I know that many of my friends will almost certainly do the same, and that's a shame because I think this is otherwise a great channel.. Please find another way.
@SianaGearz
@SianaGearz 6 жыл бұрын
You don't have to 'sit through' because you can just tappy tap tap that skip forward button. Remember that you pay 7€ for a movie ticket, and then get to watch 15 minutes of ads before it begins? Remember when you buy a DVD for 20€, and it plays 10 minutes of unskippable ads at you first? Remember when you pay 30€ for cable, and that buys you thousands of hours of ads that come every 15 minutes and can't be skipped? They even have 8 hour long ads! Get over yourself.
@Dehning
@Dehning 6 жыл бұрын
Actually, if you are watching it on a smart TV, then there is only rudimentary controls and skipping forwards can result in 30+ seconds of re-syncing with the stream every time you skip. The precise reason that I pay for KZbin red and don't watch cable is so that I don't have to sit through all the ads during my videos.

Aww, I had a NeXT computer while at University. Postscript was the default screen format! It was a prototype model, but weren't they all? I recall long boot up time, slow hard-drive access but a beautiful screen! University of Washington Electrical Engineering was working on a color version, but that went south.

Nick, here's some advice, learn how the world works and move on. The world isn't obligated to give you what you want just because you want it. Sponsors give the channel income, as do ads, but anyone who doesn't understand the whole ad issue is living under a rock or isn't even trying to keep up with current events. Ads on KZbin have never made much, you need a lot of views (many, many thousands) of ads to get a fairly moderate living, and even then it's unreliable. And that was before larger advertisers dropped out of the ad system due to certain videos, and people don't seem to realize the major brands paid far more for ads than smaller brands, the income of the average KZbinr save for a few dropped by a massive percentage, it's going up currently but it's still not back to where it used to be. But even so, a channel this size, with the views it gets, gets a fair amount of money, but Today I Found Out is not just 1 person, it's a group of several writers, researchers, etc, and then Simon and Daven. You can see the list here: www.todayifoundout.com/index.php/authors/ and even though the income from this channel would probably be enough on ads alone to support between 1 and a handful of them, to support them all, no chance, sponsors give them a reliable source of income that doesn't fluctuate month to month or week to week. Lower the profits they'll have to drop people or stop altogether or at least slow down. So it comes down to either deal with a minute of two seeing a sponsored message every once in a while or deal with far less content that would probably be of lower quality. Stop feeling so entitled to content.
@88outdoorman
@88outdoorman 6 жыл бұрын
I get that they needs ads to support the channel. I'm ok with that. In my opinion though it really degrades the quality of the video if they are placed in the middle. Ads at the beginning and end have seemed to be acceptable until now. All I'm saying is stick to the old format.

Nick Hassler Sponsers probably make them place the ad in the middle now so viewers are less likely to skip through it. Which, yes it's annoying but if that's the only way to get the company to agree to sponsor them, what other choice is there?

You completely missed the fact that Disney used the Commodore Amiga system to actually produce the world's first computer animated feature length movie - Beauty and the Beast. While it was not totally computer generated (despite being marketed as if it were) it was a major breakthrough in animation.

The Utah Clue: Ivan Sutherland. One of the first seven nodes on ARPAnet. Bigleague USAF contractor doing graphics for aircraft simulators. This started out reeeally dumb: in 1970 they "flew" by positioning a video camera over an endless band of 4' x 8' sheets of plywood painted green with little buildings on them. Very rapidly, Sutherland being a bright lad, they created the videos in data, and on to the story above...

Gnemelf R-URBEX If its at the beginning everyone skips. At the end, nobody watches. KZbin is taking ad money away from channels. TIFO is probably getting hit really hard because they talk about stuff like Hitler (in a historical context) rather frequently and stuff like that always gets demonitized. Stuff like this takes money to make. That's why they are doing it. I don't like them either, but I understand.

So then it's better to add obnoxiously long ads in the middle of the video, driving away viewers and thus reducing both views and subs, which in turn reduces the overall ad revenue? There is a balance to be found, but this ad was way, way over the line for my tastes.

Today i found out using the downvote button is the only thing i can do when the sponsorship read happens in the middle of a video, rather than the beginning or the end. Seriously, i'd rather have an option to donate on patreon or similar to not have these baked in ads, rather than having to try and skip through them when there is no visual cue when they're over like on LTT or other channels doing them.

I guess I thought that by paying every month for KZbin Red (which I have since the beginning) was a method by which one would not be required to view ads while still supporting said creator. My question: if I donate to the patreon account for the channel will I then find the same video less ads posted to patreon? Because then I'd be paying twice (with Red.) I would consider that if necessary. To those who say some of us want good content for free....nope. I'll gladly pay. But, I wont watch ads.

That's a good question. If patreon supporters are still subjected to watching the same video non-patreon people get, then the mid-video ads are a slap in the face to them.

Please add a pause to the cc in the middle of your video. (and please add it to any other videos where you have an ad break) I spent a very confused three minutes trying to figure out what I was missing since your scripted cc (thank you for scripting!!) plays through the infomercial as though it was still the content being cc'd. The ad itself didn't have any of its own captions. It was the complaints in the comments that tipped me off to what was going on. Thank you!

Daven, You and your team do fabulous work. I get to sit in the comfort of my home and learn about obscure facts that really interest me. Well-researched, thoughtfully scripted, and presented by talented actors kind-of-facts. Oh, and you do this for free! Wait a minute, I've got to sit through an advert if I want to watch the video? Oh well, shucks. At least it's hopefully keeping you above water. It surely would suck if TIFO went belly-up to the deafening silence of thousands of juvenile YT complaints about said advert. In other words, put the damned adverts wherever you'd like. As long as they're obvious (not opaquely-sponsored "here's why brand X is the best"-style crap), then I'll happily watch them. Hey, you've got to put food on the table, amirite? Keep up the great work, and thank you for all of the wonderful information that you provide to us. Sincerely, Subscriber #~5,000
