Having variation to your practice is one of the best ways for long term memory retention. In this video, Jason is back flying with Magda while teaching 3 different types of radio communications. A Class D departure, VFR Flight Following, and uncontrolled/pilot-controlled airport operations.

What is funny, and 100% accurate in this video, is the way the "student" keeps looking at the instructor when radio calls are being made. I passed my PPL in Dec 2020 and I must have looked at my instructor 1000 time for some kind of acknowledgement, approval or just help me please. I still say and think that radio communication/radiotelephony is the hardest thing when learning to fly at the start, then one day it just all falls into place. you're both doing amazing.

👋🏾👋🏾👋🏾 me too! I’m training in Nairobi, Kenya for my CPL, and before I got my PPL, I would always look at my instructor wondering WTF? What’s going on here on the radios? I am now way better with the comms! Practice makes perfect and a good pilot is always learning! 😉

I totally agree that radio calls are the hardest when starting out. It is also the item that can really screw one up if they get a call wrong. Experience talking here. Once made a REALLY bad call before take-off and was a total mess in the air with things I knew how to do afterwards.

Our controllers during a tower tour said “takeoff” is their term so pilots need to say “departure” on initial tower contact. Then when they say “cleared for takeoff” read back can include the term “takeoff.” Makes sense.
@miller745

Yes absolutely, the ONLY time a pilot should say "takeoff" is reading it back AFTER the tower said it first!

That is a good point! Standard phraseology is critical for safety. A great case study to look at where non-standard phraseology led to disaster is the KLM accident Tenerife.

Absolutely! The same applies in Kenya. We as pilots always say “ready for departure” as we hold short of the active runway. Only when we have line up the runway and are given clearance to take off, do we read back the clearance... “Cleared for take off runway **, right/left turn off, “call sign”!”

I took a discovery flight last June in an LSA. My instructor let me handle the radios at KRAC, but he wanted to handle the communications when we went through the Milwaukee Class Charlie airspace since it was my first time flying in a real plane. However, after I told him how familiar I am with using the radio through Flight Simulator sites like VATSIM and PilotEdge, he said I could handle the communications with Approach and Tower next year!

Thank you for this. I am nearing at the end of my training in helicopters, those radio calls are nerve racking. This helped calm the anxiety and is helpful in the situation. I will implement the strategy of letting the instructor fly while I make the calls. Just to get comfortable, and yes, it is different in the rotorcraft as far as no free hands but i again thank you

Thoroughly enjoyed this video. I stopped training for my PPL about 4 years ago. Watching this video I realized that mastering flight is the final step in taking control of my life. I need to do an online ground school refresher and then get back into training. I've got about 20 hours to go unless I have to start over. My last flight involved 5 touch and go's at Harrisburg International Airport in Pennsylvania. The radio communications had me rattled. I think if that I watch and perfect the radio communication I can finish my hours and pass my exam.

Hi Jason, I just wanted to say that watching this video I could really connect with it. I fly out of KWVL in Maine and I am used to being the only pilot on the field but now that I am spending more time in class C airspace like KBGR and KPWM actually talking to people is a bit more intimidating...lol anyway great job and I love your videos
