When I was a little boy in the 90s, my single parent actively forced me to read on purpose. I'm glad about this, because this enabled me to read in games that I hold very near and dear to my heart, and enabled music literacy. I've always considered that what drew the line between the 90's DOS games, SNES and NES, Genesis, and all that crap and then the 3D realm of gaming was that the former was dedicated to and dependent on the player's imagination. You had to be creative and already have a basis for forming imagination around things that could not be produced during that time period. DOS games could not have graphics like Dark Souls, so there was a lot of lore to be learned and visualized via word of mouth and wording in general. With that all said, I beat aLttP for the first time in 1999 when I was 7 years old. I did it with my cousin who was 20 at the time, I remember it clearly too because it was a couple of nights before the new millennium. It was wild, I had the instruction manual, a notebook scribbled with stuff and ideas. It's what led me to games like Riddle of the Sphinx, Myst, Riven, Grim Fandango, those types of point and clicks and more RPG's that involved puzzle detail and reading, and even RTS like Starcraft and Enemy Infestation. These games never told you where to go, you really had to have a notebook and write as you read.

We are probably around the same age if we grew up on more or less the same console generations, except back then I didn't have access to the latest console libraries as much as handhelds, and I just happened to have all the GBA ports of the SNES classics, and almost every other zelda game released on the gameboy line so that's why Alttp holds a special place in my heart. When you're a curious kid that doesn't mind a lot of reading, these kinds of games are perfect because you're spending so much time wondering what secrets the world is hiding rather than being frustrated about being stuck. Anyways, very good review of the game.

Around the remake question, Nintendo considered it a while back but decided to make a sequel instead. Porting A Link Between Worlds to the Switch would be a good right about now.

I think An HD2D type of remake for a link to the past would be pretty neat. 🤔

man, something a lot of zoomers will never understand or at least get to experience is the tech leap that meant going from one console to another; from a few colors on screen and 2 buttons to interact with the world to 6 buttons and fully realized worlds with graphics that you no longer had to put half your imagination into was simply mind blowing. You felt like all sort of things could be possible as technology progressed. then we went from feature creeping games with all sort of interactions to the halo standard of only 2 guns and graphics that overheated your pc.

I'm old enough to have played it when it came out but didn't get Zelda games well enough to make it past the opening dungeon during my weekend rental. Beat it as an adult and it's one of my all time favorites now.

About Ocarina of Toime, I gotta say, your take on it hits home a lot. As a non-native english speaker myself, I'm half surprised to see so many people that have played this game when they were younger had the same difficulties progressing in that game than I did. The way the mechanics in this game are being set can be very unintuitive, especially when you consider that most parts of the dialogue in this game are mandatory to advance in the story. No wonder why I didn't get far in it for a very long time. Also wanted to add that after recreating OoT as a passion project into Minecraft, I've come to realize that just like the original game, the main issue with my map is that there is a huge lack of clear guidance in it. I feel like the most challenging part in game design as a whole is to find the right balance between good user experience while giving the player fresh air to breathe in. Both BotW and TotK seem to be closer to what the devs had in mind when creating Ocarina of Toime initially. They must've learned a lot from their mistakes when they were reiterating the same concepts on a different light. Overall, I'm glad games like that OoT and A Link to the Past were able to saw the day so that they would set the foot of the Zelda franchise in the right direction! :)

I think the whole greatest game ever discussion has always been and will always be, just some guy's favorite game. And tbh that's just the way it should be. What's the greatest video game? Your favorite one. Whatever one.

Fellow Witcher 3 hater? Nice. I wanna say I like that you pointed out the journey was the stronger point of the story than the actual plot which is pretty basic. Id add even at the time you had games with more detailed and involved plots like Dragon Quest 4 on the NES/famicon, or stuff like Snatcher. A lot of the stronger storytelling was on pc games which tend to get less attention from the gaming community than the console stuff. I think the big issue with the discussion of greatest games ever is that certain games become deified and people assume those were the best of their time and dismiss possible hidden gems or other games that could be just as good if not better. For me though best game on the SNES is Terranigma.
