Yeah, just adding to what Lucy already said, there are 2 types of cruise ship musicians, you have 1. Guest bands/musicians - the self-employed bands, pianists or cabaret acts that are employed thru an agency, and dont have to do crew duties like fire drills and lifeboat drills etc. And then there are 2. the 'house musicians' that do. House musos are contracted directly to the company and are on PAYE for tax purposes (although can reclaim their tax back if at sea 6+ months in a tax year), and they are crew, so have all the duties and responsibilities that goes with being crew. House musicians are reading musicians, comprising maybe a trio and an 'orchestra' (7-piece), so they back the cabarets and play for the in-house shows, which requires music reading ability, and you have to be good at it to get the job in the first place. House trios on top of backing the shows and cabarets also need to play for ballroom dancing, and do their own sets of easy listening material - of which you need a great deal of it, as repeating yourself is a big no-no. This is where your reading abilities comes in, as you need several 'pads' of useful music, eg from 60s to up to date. One of the orchestra musos will be the MD, that gets paid more and their own cabin on officer deck, to oversee all the music side of things, do all the count-offs, etc. If you are unlucky enough to be a house keyboard player, you most likely will also be put down to do cocktail piano sets in the Atrium or Tiffany's bar at 10am while your cabinmate the drummer lies sleeping in his bunk, earning the same money as you. I'm not bitter :-) . House pianist will also be expected to play for church services and carol services, sometimes you can sweet-talk the cocktail pianist to do it, or swap duties, so it pays to be on friendly terms with him/her :-) . Best job of all as a muso is frontline (trumpet, sax or trombone), that get the night off half the time, as they dont have parts for you. There's also theatre staff who are also crew, such as lighting/sound, techies etc. and set up the gear wherever the musos happen to be that evening, set the stage, etc. Guest showbands, duos, guitar/vocalists, pianists and cabaret artistes are usually contracted separately thru an agency, but still need a ton of material, although reading ability is not necessarily necessary as they dont back cabaret or in-house production shows, just play what they know. As opposed to reading musos that have to play what everybody else knows. Headline acts or VIP cabaret artistes (think Jayne MacDonald) get the easiest job - passenger status onboard, no drills, good money, and only do typically 2x2 spots a week. To do that you have to be at the same standard as a 'name' act (off the telly), have 2 or maybe 3 very strong different sets (comedy, singing, illusionist, instrumental, whatever) which get performed twice on one night, then your other set twice on another night, for two seatings. Cruise staff (Entertainments Officers) have officer status, dancers have passenger (supernumary) status - dont have to do drills or other duties any more (depends on their contract I suppose). Cruise Directors need a couple or more of strong cabaret sets (some stronger than others!), then delegate all the office paperwork (drawing up daily cruise sheets/programmes etc.) to their ACD, who is probably a time-served Ents Officer. Well, that's how it was when I was on ships, back in the stone age :-) .

Do the cruise lines frown upon hiring mothers and daughters that want to start working in the cruiseline industry? How old do you have to be in order to work on a cruise ship as well as what documentation do you have to have? My daughter, who will be 18 in December, and myself, I will be 54 years young in September, were thinking about going to work on a cruise ship together, she would like the opportunity to travel and go to places she wouldn't otherwise get to see, but shes still alittle shy and she's also at the beginning of her adult life and she is still trying to figure out what she wants to do for a living... I tried to explain to her that working on a cruise ship would give her the experience she needs with the public as well as being able to meet people from all over and get to take her time figuring out just what she wants to do for the rest of her life. I'm at the age of 53, a very young 53, but I've also traveled quite alot as I grew up overseas, we've been quite a few cruises and have been all over the Western and Eastern Caribbean as well as Alaska a few times. I'm just curious whether they would allow a mother and daughter to work on the same ship and possibly be roommates?

Think your channel is brilliant. You did fail to mention youth staff, we come under entertainment. Usually we work 10 - 11 hours a day running activities and entertainment for children and teens. It’s also a hard job as you know how bored they get so constantly trying to keep them busy and engaged, there’s a lot of safety involved such as drills we would have to be the ones to take them to their meeting points in case of emergencies. Have to serve them food etc during meal times on some ships not all. Also safeguarding, first aid trained. Have to communicate and deal with parent feedback complaints etc if they have any. We also have to do registers making sure all children are accounted for when with us, just like others can be hectic and busy but it’s so much fun. I’ve worked on p and o and Disney. Maybe going back to Disney for a little bit but have also been offered carnival so undecided which one I wanna do yet. As youth staff we also have to sometimes help out in other entertainment departments, for example, if one of the cruise staff would be ill we may be asked to run bingo if we are free etc.

2 main departments? What about technical? You know the guys that run the engines (keep the lights on) and fix defects. Without one of the three department's the other two cant function to provide the services of a cruise ship.

If you are a Lisenced or Certified Marine Engineer. They will come looking for you. To get started. Apply to a Marine Engineering Program at a technical collage or university which provides this program. It’s different in different countries, it has changed, In the old days you would apply directly to companies for a cadetship which was an apprenticeship program. The company would send you to their chosen marine school. This may still be possible in the UK, or You apply through Marine Manning Agency. Here in N America and possibly now more likely in the UK. You apply directly to the marine school. Who will arrange work experience. When you complete the first year of the program you go to sea for your first sea experience as a Cadet, it’s kind of like being an intern, sort of like a like an apprentice program. You are an addition to the crew there just to learn. Paid very minimal amount. Are expected to work hard starting with the most crap(literally at times) but get trained to do everything and be in charge of the engine room. After your first sea phase you go back to collage and do another year. Followed by a 2nd sea phase. To gain more experiences. This time you should work at higher skilled tasks. You then go back for 3 year at collage and write your first engineering watch keeping certificate at the end of the 3rd year. After a year as an Engineer You go back for final collage phase an do exams which will count for certification up to 2nd Class and most of 1 st class engineer. It is also possible to be a mechanic work in engine room in a base crew position for several years to get 3 full years of experience and study for engineer certification. Cruise ship usually want cadet program graduates. Is it worth it. An engineer officer 8g to 10g $ per month. No tips though. My Son just completed the program, he is about the same age as Lucy. He did apply to Cruise ship company, Cruise ship companies chose the slightly older candidates who had some kind of shipboard experience over school leavers. My guess there have a much lower attrition rate and are more likely to complete the program. If you really want to go on Cruise ships, it might be worth while working on a Cruise ship in the hotel dept, My son did his sea phase with Desganges, he worked on Tankers, in the Arctic or on Great Lakes. He is now a Engineer in charge of a watch. 6 weeks on 6 weeks off. On a cruise ship he would be just a Junior Engineer his experience would be limited and his time only count half. And he would be paid a lot less. His friends who went on Cruise Ships call him wanting to know when Desganges are hiring. My company would pay him about 45 dollars an hour. With up to a 10g signing bonus. If I could get him to quit Desganges.

It depends what position you are applying for onboard. I'm assuming you want to be a casino manager (correct me if I am wrong)? If you have had experience in a casino and you know the right people you may be able to go in as manager. However usually, being the casino manager is something to work up to. X

Yes and no. See reply I gave to Daniel Booth. You would need to do Marine Engineering Dipolma program as a cadet but might get some exemptions. Most base crew are 3rd world but you might get a base position. Best bet is cadet program.

The Bosun and the deck crew are usually hired through an agency in their home country. P&O and Princess had some positions for experienced deck crew working directly for safety officer. Not sure if this option still exists.
