Dave (the 36-year-old with the impressive beard) was raised almost completely sheltered from pop culture by his strict military family. He was homeschooled his entire life until he entered college. He legitimately has very little knowledge of music and bands from before 2000.
John (the guy in the dark on the right) has been a MUSIC LOVER since he was born in the 1960's. Problem is, he rarely knows or fully grasps the lyrics. Dave (on the left), on the other hand, has never heard or rarely overheard the music John chooses to play for him, but tends to take lyrics literally, sometimes to unexpected ends.
John remains in the dark both as a wry play on the situation but also because of legal issues causing his attorney to recommend maintaining a low profile.
We did not write nor do we own the Copyright for the song used in this Educational Video. This is a real, honest reaction to a song Dave have never consciously heard before and/or listened to with intent. Any "facts" offered by John "Doh" are based more on his remembrances than on any actual research. Please feel free to correct him. He loves it.

The song that made them. Pop/glam/prog swirled together, and, despite being overplayed, a genius song. Their usual last song of their concerts, you leave feeling good after hearing it. Styx, no matter the lineup, is superb live

I just saw STYX live last Thursday and the first song that they played was "Come sail away". (The concert was F#$%@&% AWESOME!)

I love that South Park also had an episode that basically says death is like listening to Enya! LOL! My wife loved (past tense) Enya (and Clannad previously)...

I was 10 years old when the grand illusion came out. This was the first song I heard on the radio as far as I can remember from Styx , and I used my allowance that I was saving to buy the cassette. It was the first cassette I ever bought.

This song was a staple of classic rock radio when i was growing up. And rightly so.

Dave, your reaction to the last verse was what everyone watching was waiting for and we’re not disappointed. What a blast. Thanks.

You nailed it on your review. Dennis DeYoung said in an interview that it was the longing to be somewhere else and not specifically about aliens. The reason they changed it to a starship in that last verse was because of the space themes that were going on at the time with the movies Close Encounters of the Third Kind and Star Wars.

I do appreciate the fact that I can understand (in this case I refer to audible understanding, not necessarily conceptual understanding) the lyrics being sung in Styx songs. I think this due to their Broadway musical style approach to their songs. I am starting to have trouble remembering all the songs you have already done, but perhaps the next Styx song should be Mr. Roboto. I need LD to tell me what that song is about.

BTW, good to have you back (I know you've been back a little bit now). If you like Greek food, you need to check out Jake and Telly's in Old Colorado City. Great Gyro Platter!

I just feel sorry for all the other reactors who did NOT listen to this longer version of the song with the extra psychedelic instrumental break...they really have all missed out bigly! 😜💯😁

If you want a song by STYX with a lot of double meaning and innuendo, you should check out a very early song (ie nonhit), try The Grove of Eglantine from The Serpent Is Rising album!

I never heard of a virgin being a whore - the literalist has a weird way of playing with words. I remember buying the album, at the same time as Kansas - Point of Know Return. Somehow I never found it necessary to buy a cd-version of The Grand Illusion, though this song and Fooling Yourself are great songs.

I'm with JD about 70s music being the best. IMO the bell curve peaks at 1974. JD, your singing, or in this case mouthing, along is quite out of sync, so it just looks wrong. Dave is still echoing. Great album
