Griffi The Dancing Cockatoo

Griffi The Dancing Cockatoo

Күн бұрын

I know lots of you have been asking about where I came from and why I look the way I do. It took mommy a few days because she works and had to get some back history. So here I go. My vet says I am approximately 15 years old (but we will never really know). I am a Goffins Cockatoo and we typically live 40-60 years.
I had a daddy a long time ago who loved me very much and I lived with him for a long time and then he died which made me very sad because I loved him a lot.
His family did not know what to do with me so I got passed around a lot. I ended up with one family member who put me in a basement by myself because they didn't like my yelling (I just wanted attention plus you know I am a bird and we do that). They got mad that I was still screaming so they put me outside for a long time by myself in a very small cage with no toys and only 1 perch. They weren't very nice and would yell and throw things at my cage when I would yell for attention. I stayed in my cage for 5 years and was never allowed to leave.
Eventually another family member came and got me and dumped me at a pet store where I lived for a year and they kept me in the same tiny cage and fed me sausage rolls and sausage McMuffins (how did I know this wasn't good for me?) They kept me covered because they didn't like my screaming either I swear I just wanted attention. The owner said I had to go.
One day this really nice lady came in and it was the first time anyone had tried to hold me in so long! I was so happy and she was such a nice lady I let her hold me and I was just so happy to have someone pay attention to me I went home with her! I lived with this nice lady for 2 years but sadly her mommy got very sick. She said her brain wasn't right anymore and would leave windows and doors open and would spray poisonous stuff around the house (it wasn't her fault she didn't know she was sick) so mommy thought the safest place for me would be to go to the rescue in the hopes that I would find another nice family that would understand and love me. She was so sad and cried but I know she only did it to make me safe.
The nice people at Florida Parrot Rescue took me in and my mommy and daddy (now) volunteered to foster me. They only had me for a few months before they fell in love me (I mean who couldn't love this!) and adopted me forever and ever.
For those that don't know birds like me who go through traumatic things like this it is very hard on us. Like you we bond very deeply with our humans and when they are mean we start bad habits sometimes kind of like when you guys bite your fingernails (feather pulling). Mommy and daddy are working on this with me but it's going to be a long process and I may never be able to get over the ugly people. But I know I am loved and mommy and daddy let me out to dance and hold me all the time! I eat really good now and they don't even mind it when I scream (probably because my birdie sister has a bigger mouth).
Anyway, I sure am happy now and now I get to dance my heart out for the rest of my life!

Darling Griffi. It really hurts to think that she has been traumatised in the past and that she over preens herself in reaction to that. Thank you so much for giving her a better life, which she truly deserves. She is such a character, impossible to not fall head over heels for her immediately. Thanks again, folks.

As someone who works with exotics, thank you for having the compassion to adopt this poor baby. Cockatoos are one of the misunderstood birds and we honestly treat them so horribly. I found your comment very interesting and informative, but I have a couple of questions. You mentioned that these birds are misunderstood, and I am curious to know what and how they are misunderstood? And of course why do people treat them horribly? I’ve never owned a bird, so I really don’t know much about them, but after discovering this special girl……unfortunately a little too late, as I understand she is now passed, but since seeing her, I am completely fascinated. She is also the cutest….was.

They don't even have to go through "much" abuse to do this. They are extremely sensitive animals and can react like this from simply not getting enough attention. Attention and interaction and stimulation are extremely important for these animals, it's not just enough to feed them and keep them safe, and a lot of people don't realize this (as is obvious from birds with plucking damage such as Griffi)

She is supposed to be a wild bird. She is native to Australia and it is illegal to own her as she is a protected species. So somebody smuggled her to America for illegal sale. I never had a parrot, but I had chickens that sometimes got plucked by their sisters. I had one that had her whole back plucked clean bald. I took about a tablespoon of coconut oil and added about 5 drops of tea tree oil. I smeared that simple ointment over the bald spot and within a week all her feathers had started to grow back in. I think the tea tree smells and tastes funny so it repels the offending plucker as well as the two oils are very nourishing and restorative to the skin. I pray you will try it on Griffy. @@Aurora9990 sigh. i know that, and you’re missing my point. my point is that it isn’t that difficult to diagnose feather picking since feather picking is feather picking, and in most cases the feather picking is quite evident. now finding the reasons for feather picking could be more difficult as it can be due to mental or emotional issues/trauma and/or physical health concerns.

@@litl_kim but the point is, is that some people are trying to educate themselves, based on the visual. This video gives little important info, in the description section or verbally in the actual video. All many people see is a bird with no feathers, who is bleeding slightly. The visual looks scary. I think what WreckandCarey, as well as myself, are trying to say is...try not to be so hard on people who are concerned for her, since most are going on the little info that this video provides. Rifling through other videos to gather more knowledge would take more than 30 seconds.
