Hard pull after, he was giant compared to brother. My doe was fine at first and then went south. Fought with every thing we could think of, but passed last night. She was my favorite, just started with 4 this year. Keeping her buckling even though I don't need another.

The ewe with the big lump it looks like a hematoma or a large abscess. Stick a large gage needle in and see if u get blood or Puss. If puss it may be hard to get anything out if at all but if u get nothing, it will need to be lanced and drained. If u get blood, usually they heal themselves without intervention.

I think that it comes from trauma to her from birthing, whatever trauma it might be to mess with her ability to think clearly.
@w0560075683 жыл бұрын
I'm afraid it is even worse when sows farrow- losses by overlying are quite often approaching 10% and the dreadful thing is the bigger the litter the worse the problem because big litters generally mean low individual piglet birth weight and temporarily low energy levels in the piglets until they suckle, grossly over fatigued sows with the birthing process, etc. Most sows rarely have more than 12 functioning teats and natural survival says the strongest get the most milk and the weakest least = higher mortality in really big litters. Fortunately piglets are relatively easy to foster so it is easy to move some from one litter to a sow with fewer piglets of her own with a pretty good chance of acceptance providing they are of similar age.
@MobyDicksWife3 жыл бұрын
@@w056007568 Wow, interesting. So is that the reason for farrowing crates?
@w0560075683 жыл бұрын
@@MobyDicksWife Yes it is one of the biggest reasons in addition it can protect the herdsman in some cases from a savage bite from the sow providing they don't offer the sow some tasty morsel to chew on! They also restrict her movement to some extent to slow her body falling to the floor and squashing piglets. In addition They provide a safe area to the piglets close to the sow so if necessary heat lamps or heat pads can be placed for the piglets to lie on out of danger from the sow lying on them. When sows are kept outdoors commercially individually sows close to farrowing are provided with individual housing and copious straw bedding. Commonly these are low corrugated steel huts (A bit like a tunnel shape) with one end closed in and the other end similarly so except for an access doorway to one side for the sow to go in and out to drink and feed outdoors. In most circumstances sows will chew up the straw and form something like a huge oval birds nest shape depression into which she will farrow her piglets.

Lamb price is up...But I'd guess your input cost has also increased a lot with the rally in the grain market(creep feed,finisher pellets,ect).Average daily gain vs lbs of feed per day cost, on the finisher's would be the deciding factor.When we used to finishing hogs we always sold on the "lite"side during a hot market...sooner there gone,less feed, less chance of a unexpected (dead one); Kudos to the farmer home remodeler husband!!! I'd like to see a bit more of the JD tractor restore.
