Hi Cammy! Why are the sheep being sheered now close to cold wet Fall and Winter weather? Wouldn’t it be better in the spring like April and May so they are cooler for the summer?? Karen
@TheSheepGame3 жыл бұрын
Hi Karen. I should have probably said this was 18th August. Because they are a strongwool breed if you don’t shear them as lambs they will have far too much wool by next June. It also lowers the quality of the wool and this romney wool is actually pretty good compared to most wool we have in Uk. Lambs also do great after being shorn as they will graze more during the day, they won’t get stuck in briars, no late season flystrike, stay clean all winter and many other benefits 😊
@kmpage3333 жыл бұрын
I think he said that being cooler prompts them to eat more, which makes them better prepared for winter.

Just enjoy watching you and your team working together and having a good time. I was raised on a farm of cattle and vegetable gardens. Had 1 garden that was 225' x 175' and one in the old rodeo pin 75' x 150'. We raised peas of 3 different kinds. Corn, potatoes, snap beans, cucumbers, squash, tomatoes, cantaloupe and watermelons. Instead of playing sports I worked in the gardens till dark. So that's where I learned to work hard and established what you call grit of working long hours after school and the summer months. I was super proud of my Dad and I look back now why we worked because coming up in the 60's people didn't have a lot of money but we all managed to work together and had fresh food off the farm to feed people in need and no one was without food. I'm still like that today giving to the need of people. This world has changed but it hasn't changed me. Just wanted you to all know a little about me growing up. So as we say in Texas y'all hang in there and I'll do my part by watching your amazing videos. God Bless you all❣️❣️❣️☺️🥰

Sharyn, I love listening to him too, and I’ve also noticed that he speaks differently to his friends/colleagues. It does sound like fast-forward! But I love it because I feel I’m hearing how people in Scotland really talk, rather than trying to “anglicize” their accents. I’d rather learn to understand them than have them adjust for me. I’m learning to speak Irish, and Scots Gaelic is next on the list. Maybe that will help train my ear to pick up the accents. But like you, I enjoy watching regardless. Cammy and his family and friends are so personable, and of course the drone photography of the area is icing on the cake. I’m 50% Scottish, according to the DNA companies, and the family story is we’re from the Highlands and Hebrides. So it’s like going home in a way. Katy is a great shearer. Quick, strong, efficient, gentle, thorough. You boys can aspire to become gentleman shearers. You guys just have to keep practicing. But really, you lads should leave the hard work for the women like Katy and Lizzy who are clearly just better cut out for this kind of work than boys are. You gentlemen are really well suited to collect the wool and make sure these hard working women have refreshing drinks and fresh & tasty homemade snacks during their busy day. That is of course after you have made sure to get the kids ready for the day, made a hearty breakfast, set out her clothes, made the beds, washed the dishes, and do a little tidying up around the house before heading out to help these professional women. Remember, don't worry about the women shearers being so good. They are just made to do this.

I notice that with this breed if sheep the fleece comes off in clumps and not in a nice full piece. Am I correct? And this must make it harder to shear.
@TheSheepGame3 жыл бұрын
That actually makes it easier as it means the wool is short and light and doesn't pull the skin like a normal fleece does. Less chance of nicking these ones. They just have wool in a lot of places that cross bred lambs don't so it all takes more time to shear off. Cheers June

How come you shear lambs at this time of the year Cammy? Are they off for slaughter and it’s for the wool or??

This was 18th August Ben so my apologies for not stating that in video. Just catching up. 😁

@@TheSheepGame no need mate. Even August seems late to me but I’m an amateur and you explained why in a separate thread. Appreciate the insight. Keep up the great work and vids.

@@benpattinson1 thanks! Yeah there are loads of benefits but even more so in these romneys as they grow so much wool. 👍

Do you get more for shearing those type of sheep
@TheSheepGame3 жыл бұрын
I get less because i’m working for someone else 😂. Not sure what he will charge. They are shorn in the quiet part of the season so u don’t need to charge any more really as noone is that busy and this farm has 3000 lambs to shear.
