A little info about frame drums to keep in mind when acquiring one

I can only recommend what I have tried out and have been playing which is remo and Cooperman Frame Drums.
Most of my students use the 16" remo fiberskyn drum. They are very accessible and affordable.
It's a good size to start off with for both upright and lap position.
Anything smaller will sound higher toned and you'd need to play more precise to get a good sound.
18" and 22" will be heavier to hold and practice with but will have more tonal possibilities
and be more resonant.
There are different kinds of frame drums out there.
Ones with the mallets and ones meant to play with the hands.
They are both made differently and with different heads for different purposes.
For my classes you will need a hand played frame drum that has a thumb notch or thumb hole.
The drums played with mallets are made with sider shell which makes it a challenge to hold
and the skin is made from thick skin and not responsive to the hand. They are not resonant.
Remo has fiberskyn heads and renaissance heads.
Many like the renaissance heads that were make in the U.S and they are now only
made in Taiwan and don't quite sound the same and the color is slightly lighter in the head.
Buying drums online is always a challenge as you won't know what they will sound like.
Make sure you know the return policy.

go to 1:40 for the sound of the fibreskin; 2:22 for the renaissance sound sample; 3:27 for the black drum... remo renaissance 22" at 4:36, with singing at 5:12 (I noted those for myself and thought I would share)

Well done, Miranda! I think we need more of these videos to help everyone know how to buy their drums, especially as we remain in the pandemic with little access to in-person comparisons. Whether purchasing online or calling their local brick n mortar music stores (I prefer mom n pop music stores to big box ones but that’s my preference 😉), to have some real education is helpful to folks, I’m sure.

Beautiful. Thank you for your demonstrations with different frame drums. I have a couple Remo Buffalo type drums but am going to start learning in a course taught by Krista Holland but am required to have a frame drum. I did not know there were so many different types.

Anyone use moongels, evans eq pods or any other dampening device to lessen a drum’s overtones?

Remo drums are not that easy to get here in Germany. Here mainly Meinl and Schlagwerk are the ones with a high quality. Meinl sells a wide range of drums either with goat skin or synthetic skin tunable or with a fixed tuning. In the big citys like Berlin or Hamburg with a music shop you may even be able to play them ahead of the purchase and there are lots of KZbin videos with demonstrations of Meinl Framedrums. But anyway at the big music shops you can return them within 30 days and get your money back.
