A Little Kingdom - Lundy (2007)

A fascinating film about the history of Lundy Island, by David Cox. Lundy has been managed by the Landmark Trust since 1969, but this film looks at its time under the ownership of the Harman family from 1924 to 1968. My Grandad was born on the island in 1896, son of the blacksmith , my mother said he was the last person to be born there, but I am not sure. Ernest Aurther Jones

Personally I've wished to visit for over 50 years as I'm keen on birds and wildlife but, sadly, suspect I never will, however this brought me a little closer to it, so thank you for a wonderful upload. Regards.

I first went to Lundy back in 1966 with a group of friends. We sailed from Bideford on the Lundy Gannet. We met Mr Harman at the Marisco Tavern, and he asked us to play for him and his wife on their anniversary. Idyllic place, happy memories.

Been there. Popped down from Black mountains south wales for visit. Beautiful place. Looking out to sea on a tufty thrifty steep cliff on the north point, with fulmars gliding past. Skimming stones and sitting with seals on the beach between the island and Rat island. Cosying up in Bramble villa west. Sunbathing on the rocks at brazen point as waves lapped at our feet. Feasting on rich soay lamb in the marisco tavern with a warm chatty atmosphere. Watching the sunset from the battery. HMS Oldenburg pulling away from the jetty as I say goodbye to heaven (temporarily) on a warm, clear evening, the friends we left behind jumping into the calm blue waters, where we had caught and eaten a fresh mackerel raw the night before. The quiet, rocky cliffs of Lundy disappear into the haze.

I think I still have a couple of those stamps, inherited from my mother whose family )the Heaven family) owned Lundy long before this guy bought it but they maintained an interest. Some of the family who live in Canada go back for reunions from time to time.

Also there is nothing illegal about having a currency. As long as it’s pegged to the UK pound and is called a “token”. Many companies have their own tokens.

Anyone remember Phil the Boatman, and his wife? I remember going to their baby's christening in the 1970s, in the Lundy Church, when we were on holiday in Hanmers. And getting drunk at 11, in The Marisco Tavern. No licencing laws! An education.

Quite facinating . Only the coin incident was a bit curious . Who would want to put his image on a coin? Lovely place, hope people dont disturb the wildlife too much .Heard recently that Puffins, are on the endangered species list .Why cant man give more protection to this dictinctive special bird? Spend more money, on guarding their nest,, so that the fledglings are not killed by foxe's mainly. So many people without work, it would be easy, to find some young bird lovers, to take on the job. National trust should have less deciders and more actives.

This should have been its own microstate like Monaco. It was controlled by nobody only the changing owners and the residents never paid taxes until it was handed over to the British government. Officially Terra Nullius despite what the U.K. would claim. Fascinated by this tiny islands history. I have 5 of the Lundy Pennies and 5 half pennies that were issued. Want to visit when I go to England.
