In 1989 I visited San Jose to present my thesis at an IEEE conference at the Red Lion Inn. I stayed in a room on SJSU campus. I read about BART, sadly never took a trip on it.

Watch many 991/199 trains going over Tehachapi. Thanks for the cool tour of modern BART west side. I watched them build it in an-opened up Market Street and floating the tunnel sections on the Bay. Rode it through the 70's, 80's, and 90's off and on from Fremont to SF.

The thing you forgot to mention is that the payment on BART is zone based, similar to LIRR, Metro-North, NJT, etc. Only difference is you pay with a card and not a ticket that you have to display for the conductor. I don't know if fare checks happen on BART trains like the NYC railroads, though.

In 2 weeks I will have been in NYC 8 years, moving from SF after being there 21 years. I moved before the new BART and Muni trains were put into service -- I've been back since of course, but they don't approach the level of frequency we enjoy in NYC and regionally. Keep in mind that the filming locations of George Lucas' first film THX1138 were filmed in the BART and Caldecott tunnels before they were opened for service. Those vocoder announcements are 40 years old. They're FINALLY being replaced. Not sure, but there used to be an "excursion" fare where you could travel the system for a low far as long as you didn't exit anywhere else than the station you entered so you could tour the entire network for a low single trip fare.

The only rail system in The US that employs The Iberian Broad Gauge 5ft 6in.

The voice of BART are affectionately called George & Gracie. There was a project to modernize them, but BART is sticking with the legacy voices for the time being.

​@@3985uprryes, to some extend I have to agree but it's part of BART's history and once you ride multiple times BART you will start to love them. Now, it's kind of like a bay area iconic monument and remember that these voices where kind of futuristic at that they were develop. Now it's more a retro thing that is popular. Hopefully, we can continue to have those voices for the future.

@@Alejandro-vn2siIn that sense, I’m glad I don’t live there. I’ve grown to really dislike, heartless, soulless, stoic kind of voices anywhere. Maybe it’s me but it symbolizes lack of sincerity. Maybe back then it was a magnificent technological moment.

@@3985uprr maybe we can disagree on this, but at least we have to agree that BART is a good system. While it has its issue, it is still an excellent train system!
