Definitely one of the greatest albums in mainland China. Glad to watch your reaction video and some of your comments have inspired me a lot especially comments from a non-Chinese native speaker on the lyrics.

About the line “Until the building collapsed” from “Kill the One From Shijiazhuang”, and about that era of China. Before China's reform and opening up, it was a planned economy. Workers had high status and the people were the masters. At that time, large factories in various places, if they had a certain scale, were very rich. The factories would invest money to build residential areas, hospitals, and schools for their employees, all starting with the factory's name. For example, Jingzhou Steel Factory Hospital, Agricultural Machinery Bureau Residential Area, Jing Steel Elementary School, supermarkets, convenience stores, cinemas, etc., were all available, just like a small society or small city. "The factory is my home, and construction depends on everyone." Moreover, the jobs in the factory were iron rice bowls. When the father retired, the son took over, and when the son retired, the grandson took over. The entire family worked in the factory. The neighbors were all colleagues from the factory, and they may not leave the living area built by the factory in their lifetime because everything was available. Some factory hospitals had medical facilities that were even better than city hospitals because they had money, so their medical equipment was more advanced. So there were residents outside the factory who would pull strings to come to the factory hospital for treatment. On the other hand, the big background was the Soviet big brother, and the United States, two superpowers facing off, the US-Soviet Cold War. One was our socialist big country, and the other was a capitalist big country. At that time, we had quite a bit of admiration for the Soviet big brother, even though we had contradictions with the Soviet Union at the time, which even led us to get closer to the United States. This also affected to some extent the process of our formal establishment of diplomatic relations with the United States and our reform and opening up. Overall, in such a thriving environment, especially if you come from a factory worker's family, life was actually quite good, and even a bit carefree, because it was an iron rice bowl, and the treatment was good. Until, until, the end of the US-Soviet Cold War, the dissolution of the Soviet Union, we ended the planned economy and moved towards a market economy, reform and opening up, encouraged layoffs, encouraged going to sea to do business, the entry of capital, and the impact of the international trade market on the domestic market. The state no longer allocates jobs to university graduates, and so on. These factors also led to the occurrence of "tanks". The occurrence of these series of events had the greatest impact on those worker families. It was a tremendous change in times. With the dissolution of the Soviet Union, the greatest socialist country in the world was gone, and our big brother in our hearts was gone. It was as if the faith had collapsed, people would have doubts, whether everything we firmly believed in before was correct, and whether our efforts would lead to failure like the Soviet Union? Then we ended the planned economy and moved towards a market economy, factories began to reduce production. They no longer needed so many workers, and all aspects of factory income began to decline, which triggered a large-scale wave of layoffs. Slogans such as "If I don't lay off, who will?" came out. The iron rice bowl was gone, and the "carefree" life was gone. In addition to the professional skills learned in the factory, a large number of laid-off workers had no other skills to make a living. People also began to become frightened, lost, and at a loss, which is also sung in the song "Kill That Shijiazhuang Man", which is the state of the people in the background of that era. The line from this song "Until the building collapses." One refers to the Soviet Union, the belief in socialism. One refers to the working class, the iron rice bowl. Zibo barbecue, Jinzhou barbecue, etc., why are these barbecues in old industrial cities so famous. It can be traced back to that period at the earliest. A large number of laid-off workers had nothing to do, and the cooking technology required for barbecue is very low. The factory's welding technology and discarded machinery and equipment can be disassembled and then simply reassembled to become a barbecue platform. So they made their own barbecue equipment and started barbecue on the roadside. And their target consumer group is basically dominated by laid-off workers. They roast something casually to eat, and various organ barbecue ingredients also began to become mainstream at that time because they are cheaper, so the consumption of barbecue is also very low. Gradually, they had scale, became a school on their own, and became famous. This is a helpless and necessary period. It is a pain that a country must experience in its march towards modernization. Interestingly, the reason for the birth of "798", the earliest and largest modern art park in China, is due to the low rent of abandoned industrial parks and workshops after the mass layoffs of workers. Because artists are relatively poor, the 798 Industrial Park naturally became the largest gathering place for modern artists in northern China and even the whole country.

Their instruments are so in tune partialy because they simply didn't have a proper studio when recording this album. They made little money before publishing this album so they had to learn all those recording techniques by themselves and borrow equipments from their friends. It took years for them to make this album but those effort did pay off.

@@spiderhandspnz Second album named“A tour on the alameda of southwest Ji” is more stunning than the first one. It was really a work of art. Ji is a long-standing abbreviation of Hebei province which is the location of this band, and it is an industrial province known for supporting the capital, enduring pollution, and producing natural resources.

@@spiderhandspnz There were many quarries in southwestern Hebei, and they left behind many broken ridges. The thousands of miles of mountains with numerous holes and wounds shook the band members on the train, and their thinking ultimately condensed into this album

They were inspired by Blind Melon and King Crimson. For example the third song, A Heart Wrenching Joke and a Long Daydream, was inspired by King Crimson's Peace - A Theme as well as the fourth song, The Boulder That Crushes the Breast, was inspired by Blind Melon's Soak The Sin. The anecdote is that their former band name 'The Nico' is the name of Blind Melon's vocalist's daughter. And of course they created their indigenous characteristics deeply rooted in the bleak past(their first album) and unspeakable present(their second album) of the post Reform and Opening-up generation.

Thank you for your contributions to spread rock music of chinese mainland! By the way, i strongly agree with the opinion that their lyrics must be linked with the past of china and the lives of ordinary people. i think mandarin indie rock needs more bands that dare to voice and create.

I'm glad you like them, not sure if you know the background story of their songs. This album was written more than 10 years ago when they were young, most of the lyrics were written by the bass player Ji Geng, the song Qing Huang Dao was written during vocal Dong Yaqian's depression period, when he lost his dog(died), his friend in the band had to go to University, they did not know if they will continue the band or not, Yaqian stayed in a convalescent hospital in Qing Huang Dao, deeply depressed.

Besides, the band is from Heibei province, an heavy industrial province next to the capital city Beijing, many factories in that province, most resident been working class, with a hometown designed to be industrial, highly polluted, crowded, people being practical, give up dreaming in early life... maybe that helps you understand their whole lyrics more.

:/ I'm not sure how you're going to feel about the upcoming discography review... considering that I don't feature the lyrics because of the fact that I can't understand them natively like with english tracks... but hopefully, if you watch it, you like everything else!(?)

It's interesting the literal translation of "万能青年旅店" is "Omnipotent Youth Hotel", lots people think their band name might be salute to the band "Neutral Milk Hotel". Indeed they said "Been inspired by a 90s American alt-rock band at begin" perhaps the "90s band" refers to Neutral Milk Hotel

It is really hard to understand the mean of lyrics… In 4th song, “Fisher King” has the same pronunciation as “desire”in Chinese, “fat city” has a similar pronunciation to “northern cities”,which gave up their development and gave all resources to coastal cities😢. Those who understands Modern Chinese History can feel the sadness under happy strings.
