A load of useful (and useless) information about the Sea of Thieves map

This video is all about the sea of thieves map, including its real world scale, some things which you may find aid you in your sailing, and other bits of information that you'll literally never need in your life ever, but hey you know now.
I did a lot of the research for this video myself, but a lot of the credit also definitely goes to the folks at mermaid’s lullaby and their interactive map. www.merfolkslullaby.com
To obtain an accurate measurement for the length of the map I sailed backwards and forwards across the top of the map 5 times (10 total journeys), and then checked my statistics page on the Sea of Thieves website to get the distance sailed in metres. I then divided this measurement by 260 to get the length of a map square. I verified the measurement with the folks at mermaid's hideaway who also had a measurement of 600m.
Also I was able to calculate my average speed during this journey, as 39km/h (29mph), so if you want to go from Southampton to New York, it's gonna take you about 6 days.
All the measurements I got in this video were based off pixel measurements on photoshop.
Also this video literally took a week to render because it's 4k 60fps and the map image is huge so takes ages to render and after effects is also a really slow program so thank you to my pc for casually staying switched on for a week straight.

That volcano at the bottom of the devils roar has actually come close to sinking me before. We were doing a skeleton fleet and that volcano was right next to it.

Yeah, originally the skeleton fleets spawned in the four corners of the map (including around that volcano). Now there's only a single location just west of the the sea dog tavern.

6:40 Actually, in lore, it is said that the Shroud ebbs and flows like the wind, swallowing and revealing new islands at random. The Shores of Plenty is actually the most recent region to be revealed by the Shroud, although I either forgot how long ago that was, or it was never said.

@@joebidenshusband6593 True, but that was because of the Forsaken Alliance. The figurehead they used to part the shroud broke and it’s pieces spread throughout the region, revealing the Devil”s Roar. The Shores of Plenty is the most recent region to have been naturally revealed by the shroud.

6:00 the sea volcano on the SE part of the DR was made for the original fleet spawns. all of the fleet spawns were in corners originally, and the the one in the roar was special because the volcano became active during that fight. it was also special because no one did it. it took ages to get there and there was no extra loot for the event being in the roar. fleet spawn spots changed during several updates and now there is only just one in the center, it encompasses most of the sea just north of reapers hideout.

It’s the only open spot left, rare likes to spam rocks. Adding more and more every update so now if there was a fleet anywhere else it would consist of you and the skelly smacking into random rocks constantly

The ocean current was also used for navigation by ancient sea farers in real life besides the stars, it always points in the same direction and never changes. So the devs put some time and effort in real sea navigation into the game. I'm pretty sure the Ocean current goes SE in the Pacific Ocean also coming from Asia to North America, however i'm not sure it's the same direction with the Atlantic Ocean.

I would think that the map would have to be close to the ring of fire. That’s where the devils roar would make sense. Considering that the ring of fire has thousands of volcanoes in almost a straight line. And all of the big islands there have volcanoes.

Its stated over and over again that the SOT is in the Caribbean, not the Pacific. In books the game itself etc. There are other places in the world with volcanoes.

Your speed calculation might be more than a bit off, as going up and down the waves is (in total) a lot of extra distance, so when you do the Distance/Time calculation you may get a higher speed than is correct. Unless you swam under the waves in which there would be a lot less error.

Bear in mind the distance was measured using pixels on the map, so that’s fine, it could’ve affected the time a little, but I don’t think swimming above the waves is any slower than below the waves is it? I might have to test that.

​@@LongingString I assume that the actual speed itself is not affected by being above or below, but I mean that the fact that the waves move you up and down means that your velocity isn't going forwards 100% of the time. While you may be going x m/s at all times, when you account for the waves pushing you up and down, you will take longer than if you were on flat water. Speaking of flat water, I think you should do this experiment about speed on a pond/inland water where there are no/minimal waves at all. I hope you understand what I mean by my example about the waves pushing you, I can't really think of a better example or way to articulate it. Maybe like yourself running on land over hills at a constant forward speed, going up and down the hills means you don't move as quickly laterally as a lot of your speed is put into traversing the hills. Imagine looking 2D top-down at the character running over very large hills, they would seem to slow down for no apparent reason at some times even though they travel at a constant speed. It's because, despite the unchanging speed, they are locked to the ground and have to travel the entire distance of the hill up and down and so they do not move at a solid 'global' speed. I really hope my example is clear enough and you get what I mean about it, even I am having trouble trying to get an example clear enough. Do you think what I mean is valid enough? I wouldn't be surprised if the SoT characters really do move incredibly quickly.

@@doubel9245 yeah I already understood exactly what you meant, I was just explaining that when I measured swim speed I used the distance on the map, and time swimming along the surface, so I guess when I converted that to the time it would take to swim across the map, you’d be doing it in the same conditions that I measured swim speed in, so I think that time should be pretty accurate. You have made me realise though, that the reason the game occasionally awards you for sailing a nautical mile when your ship is stationary is probably from your ship bobbing up and down in the waves. There’s this video where a guy does some crazy stuff with the game’s code that makes the game tell him how fast he’s going at all times, and it turns out you do run and swim stupidly fast, and your pirate is like, 3m tall and shit like that, I can’t really remember, but the video is unlisted and I’ll try and find a link since that’s a pretty good source for this kind of thing.

@@LongingString Yeah I get what you mean too about the realistic timings for swimming across the map if someone was to try it themselves. I was just meaning about the final speed measurement might not've been accurate, but I agree that the predicted time for the map swim would be correct. The ship distance thin makes a lot of sense too now that I think about it! That might be a good piece of content to include if you do more SoT fact videos or something. Good video regardless of my nitpicking, I liked it a lot!

Some sea forts seems to belong to the Spanish Empire at some point of the history of Sea of Thieves, the six sea forts provide a lot of usefull resources, like Kegs, Cannonballs, blankets and treasuries. Also there's food inside, wich means that the Ghosts inside the forts have died not too much time ago, but in Sea of Thieves the putrefaction or decomposing don't exists, so is Imposible to known how long where the spaniards living there. There are 6 different sea forts, 2 of them seems to be abbandoned with a lot of vegetation growing inside, other 2 seems to not have been abandoned, being all in perfect maintenance, the last 2 seems to be prisions and don't have any tipe of crane with food barrels, so you will never find meat or fish, cooked or not, in that 2 places...
