Midgets were so competitive that many drivers had no desire to go to the next level. They ranged from American Bob Tattersall, who was a bigger name in Australia than at home, to Colorado racer Grier Manning whose four-cylinder Chevy II - powered Midget split the Colorado Midget Assn in two.

Midget racing was extremely popular in California before and after WW2. Midget racing was killed by the invention of the TV in the early 1950s, as you could sit at home and watch TV for free. Every town in the LA area had a 1/4 mile dirt track. Midgets would race every day of the week and sometimes twice a day on the weekends. Several Indy 500 winners came out of Calif midget racing... .....Bill Vukovich, Johnnie Parsons, Sam Hanks, Jimmy Bryan, Troy Ruttman, Roger Ward and the last Parnelli Jones. When Indy cars switched to rear engine cars the dirt track drivers at Indy came to an end. Now all the drivers come out of the paved racing sports car world.

There was no TV coverage back then. Racing wasn't taken seriously like it is today. The Indy 500 was live on the radio. In some places Darlington was too. That was about it. In the late 1950s, if you were lucky, you might see a poorly made 20, 30 minute sponsor promotion film on TV six months later. That was it..

Gasoline was only used once at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. That experiment ended with the deaths of Dave McDonald and Eddie Sachs in the 1964 race and gasoline was never used again by Indycar.
