A tip for when sawing wood without anything to steady the wood. If you carry a blanket or set of gloves you can fold it up and use the folded blanket or gloves as a cushion to lock the wood behind one of your knees for quick stable, comfortable and easy cutting, you can do this without a blanket but it can be uncomfortable. You hold the wood near the end with your arm high above the back of the blade so there's absolutely no way the blade can cut your arm or leg and because you are holding onto the wood it won't drop on a potentially wet floor saving you having to bend over to pick it up.

It always amuses me to see how many little tricks we share in common. I too carry a piece of string (attached to my day pack) and often use it to hang my pack on days when the ground is wet or mucky, and I use the same technique: bowline and a marlinspike with a toggle. Like you, I find the spine of my Silky saws to be outstanding ferro-rod scrapers. Equally good for that is the spine of the saw or the file on your Leatherman multi-tool. I use that as often as the spine of the Silky saw. Nice gear load out, Mark. Thanks for sharing. Cheers, - Martin

My favorite striker is the the saw on my Leatherman. Sadly this one met its demise on a camp with the scouts. I have another Leatherman but it is at work at the moment. The file works great too but mostly I use it for my axe when I get little chips or rolls. The dc4 brings the edge back nice and the sleeve it comes with acts as a decent strop aswell. I usually keep 1-2 big bin liners and 2 small ones in there too but forgot them during the prep. I should get another haversack for my day to day and just keep this one for the trails. Thanks for stopping in Martin. Stay warm winters coming.

I used to carry the same saw and you mentioned it about the blades snapping. Especially in the cold. I love my Bahco for crafting but the Corona razor tooth cuts like no other saw can. It's not the quality grip like silky but I have used mine many hrs and it's still holding up great and the blade isn't as brittle. So I carry 2 folding saws. I know it sounds odd but that bahco such a great crafting saw. Great video and awesome bag and Contents.

I love my bacho too I have had it jam and bend into a right angle. I put it on the ground, pounded it flat with a rock and finished the job. Lol my favorite bush saw it the Agawa canyon boreal 21. That thing is bomb proof. I have broken 2 silky saws after this one goes there won't be another one. But man it cuts nice.

The only explanation for using a ferro rod is so that you can become proficient with it.
@ATOMark2 жыл бұрын
Agreed because carrying and tool that you don't know how to use is a waste. I know that a lighter is the best tool for fire but they too have their limitations.
@MrDkgio2 жыл бұрын
Why do people spread this old wives tale about lighters not working in the cold? Keep it in a shirt pocket, that way if the lighter doesn’t work due to cold, it doesn’t matter because you died hours ago. Same with the they don’t work if they get wet BS Also the emptying itself, if you don’t secure the top.
@ATOMark2 жыл бұрын
It doesn't matter what you or I believe. I done arguing this point. I've explained what happened to me in another video and keep getting comments like this one. I have lots and lots of dirt time and know what I am talking about but that doesn't matter. The only thing that does is if you are on team Bic or team ferro rod. There isn't a better tool to start a fire than a lighter but mine failed me in an extreme situation once and ferro rod saved my ass that's why I carry both.
@MrDkgio2 жыл бұрын
Same here, ex forces from the Arctic circle to BAOR in winter, 40 plus years of carrying lighters, I’ve never had a lighter not work due to the cold, had lighters soaking wet after full on dunking, they still work. If the lighter doesn’t work due to cold, it’s due to human error and can still be fixed by body heat. Will link a demo video of water drenched lighter, brb

@@ATOMark I agree on carrying both by the way, always got two lighters and a ferro rod if out in the wild, my only issue was with the lighter doesn’t work in cold weather, it’s simply not true.
@ATOMark2 жыл бұрын
@@MrDkgio I will just say that it really is a combination of cold and humidity. But I have had a lighter that was in my jacket pocket in -30 that just sparks. Thats the beauty of conversations you and I will just have to agree to disagree on that one. Cheers brother
