As promised in my "How to buy a turntable" video, here's a closer look at my Sony PS-LX3. Sony turntables are the sleepers of the vintage turntable world - they don't get quite as much attention as some other brands, despite Sony being one of the leaders in turntable and tonearm design in the 70's and 80's. Consequently you can get excellent models like the PS-LX3 for an extremely low price, even in great condition.
Find a Sony PS-LX3 or PS-LX5 (same turntable but quartz locked) on Ebay: ebay.to/2mwfQGx

I used to have a PS-LX3, before that I had a PS-LX22. Both were very good tables. I even ran a Shure V15 III on the LX3 and it worked like magic.

I’ve noticed the tonearm comes down just a little fast, I have an old Sony PS 3300 semi automatic that i added some damping fluid to the tonearm raiser shaft, now the tonearm comes down super smooth into the record start groove , before it wound shift or slip into it.

I have a Sony PS-LX2 that still works great. I'm the original owner, and despite its age it doesn't really have a ton of miles on it. I like the fact that it's direct drive.

i really like old sony stuff. i used to have a ps-lx2. even though it was almost bottom of the line, it still had a quartz locked direct drive motor, and standard headshell. it was a great, solid record player. then i moved on to a ps-x600, with the biotracer arm. then on to a ps-x555es, with the linear tracking biotracer arm. i even have one of the sony moving coil cartridges; the mc-xl3. great stuff.

This era of Sony is where they perfected a lot of TT tech (like my Biotracers). Companies will never have that kind of budget for R&D anymore for turntables and Sony made some of the greatest at the end of the vinyl era.

The specs on the old direct drives were great ..If you look at new ones like Audio Technica Direct Drive that looks like a Technics 1200 ,the wow and flutter is .2%,the deviation is not listed and other new tables cannot even get under .0 unless you pay over 1000k like VPI and the specs get much better . I have a Sansui SR 525 DD Manual Table .03% W and F and it has no inner grove distortion when it plays..It tracks very accurately with a rare Precept 220 Cartridge made by Audio Technica in the 1980s and a Grado Gold . It is over 40 years old now.

Great video, one of the best I’ve seen on vintage turntables, most informative. I am a little biased though as I still hav3 my PSLX4 from 1981 and it still runs like a dream. Even though I also have a good modern Project deck, which does play well, I still think my old Sony PSLX4 beats it hands down for speed stability and robust design, after all it’s now a 37 year old turntable and still working great. I wonder how many of today’s turntables will still be running in another 37 years time, not so many I would guess. I also still have my original 1980 Sony STRVX2L from 1979 is also still running and I’ve had other amps that died within 10 years and the old Sony workhorse is still going after almost 40 years! They knew how to build hi-fi to last in those days.

Based on this and your other videos I've just bought a second hand ps-lx5. Except for a good clean of the chassis and tonearm it needed nothing to run smoothly. I think it even has its original stylus installed which looks fine so it must not have made a lot of miles the past 38 years. I'm very happy with it and wanted to thank you because your videos gave me the confidence to buy a second hand ps-lx.

With the tonearm bearings not aligned perpendicularly with the cartridge it will skew the vertical angle of the stylus. You need to keep the arm completely level with the plinth, and hope your records aren't warped. Won't affect performance that much though, and SONY saved a few pennies making a cheaper mold for the tonearm assembly.

Thanks a lot for making me aware of this turntable. It has pretty much all the features I want while being a lot cheaper than a Denon turntable with the same features. But I have to say, that those removable plastic stoppers aren't actually useless. When I put on an LP, I put it against those stoppers. This way it's much easier to put on the record on the turntable...well at least for clumsy me. The only thing that'd make it perfect, is if it would automatically select the correct speed. But that's a minor point
@ModernClassic
@ModernClassic 6 жыл бұрын
The longer I've had it, the more I've thought those plastic stoppers were more useful than I initially thought. I do wish they had rubber bumpers, though, and I may add that to them myself if there's clearance (I can't remember how much there is at the moment).

The motor may or may not be made by Matsushita; I don't know, but I would doubt it. Feel free to prove me wrong but I've never seen Matsushita written on any of the internal parts. Matsushita is a general parts maker in Japan, though; Technics is a brand name, not a manufacturer, so it wouldn't be all that surprising to see their parts turn up in a variety of turntables. None of the rest of the turntable is made by Matsushita, though. The tonearm design and manufacturing process, for example, were actually patented by Sony.
@musicman8270
@musicman8270 5 жыл бұрын
@@ModernClassic The whole thing is Matsushita. A few differences, but the plinth is almost identical to my technics. Sony , like most large companies farms out stuff they want but do not care to spend millions on re-inventing when paying license fees will get the job done. Pretty much all of the direct drive of the time were technics. Except maybe Denon. And the funniest thing is badge engineering fools almost everybody unless its pointed out. Then it becomes obvious. I have a 2,000 B&W subwoofer, really a Sunfire. Common industry practice. Spend millions re-inventing the wheel. Or pay a fee. A no brainer really

I mean, I'm just not sure what you're basing your opinion on other than an overall visual similarity. But many turntables had a similar visual design in the late 70's/early 80's. There's nothing that I see anywhere that indicates that really any part of this turntable was made by Matsushita, and I'm reasonably familiar with Technics models of that era. Which specific Technics model do you think the PS-LX3 is based on?

Yep, most of the 'old school' companies had excel designs back in the pre CD day.... wonder why one of them doesn't just reproduce copy of their design from then - Pioneer still exists, reproduce the 117 full auto for example. Or this Sony. I'd think they would sell at less than $ 500.

Hi :) thanks for your very informative video! I recently purchased this turntable but wish to update the cartridge. Is there one that you would recommend apart from the standard and what would be the tracking force and tone arm balance? I've read that this model has a very light tone arm and as such a heavy cartridge could damage records? I'm new to this and just wish to have quality sound but it is a second hand buy so wish to replace the cartridge in-case its too old. - thanks in advance :)
@ModernClassic
@ModernClassic 6 жыл бұрын
You need a high compliance stylus. The actual tracking force will depend on the stylus; I have an ADC XLM Mk. II and I have it set at 1.5 grams, which is the maximum for that stylus (but within spec; I had a reason for maxing it out but don't remember what it was right now). XLM's are not easy to find anymore and I can't even find the email confirmation for where I got mine, but other popular choices without breaking the bank are the Ortofon 2M Red or OM10, or the Shure M97xe. Also get yourself a cheap tracking force gauge on Ebay; there's no need to spend $100 when the $10 Chinese ones work fine. Use the manual to set up the tonearm - you can find the PSLX5 manual here (same turntable, just has quartz drive but tonearm/setup are the same): www.vinylengine.com/library/sony/ps-lx5.shtml

@ModernClassic
@ModernClassic 6 жыл бұрын
I've seen that integrated cartridge/headshell; I'm not sure if that was just a lower-cost option or what. With that, you're basically limited to what's available rather than having much choice. There's this: www.turntableneedles.com/ND-150G-Type-Stylus-for-Sony-XL-150G-Cartridge--our-Needle-7832_p_1488.html And then there seems like an even cheaper one on Ebay, and probably the same Ebay model on several other sites. I'm not sure how good these are; probably "fine" but would basically sound like what you have now, just back to being new instead of potentially worn out. You could still look for the upgraded headshell somewhere; I got mine on organdonorparts.com, but they seem to be sold out right now. Ebay has them, though. The model # is SH-151. Obviously that's starting to get expensive if you replace the headshell for ~$50 and cartridge for ~$100. The stylus for your current headshell is about $25.

@ModernClassic
@ModernClassic 6 жыл бұрын
It probably depends on how bad it is. I haven't ever had to do it to a turntable platter, but if it was just a little corrosion I'd probably try some metal polish (like Brasso) first to see if it'd just buff out. If that doesn't work, there are a lot of acid-based products designed to get oxidation off of metal. Some people like automotive wheel cleaner, but that's probably one of the strongest things you could buy. I'd go to your local Home Depot and look in their solvent section to see what kind of metal cleaners they have, but I'd probably try Brasso or something like it first.

I bought one second. How to connect to an amplifier because there is a thin wire to the left, it must also be connected, if so where? And the light sensor system does not work. This means that it is also broken? furthermore he does it but I get no sound, unfortunately. What am I doing wrong? As soon as possible to answer this question.
@ModernClassic
@ModernClassic 7 жыл бұрын
The thin wire is a ground wire. If you have an amp that accepts phono input, it'll have a ground wire terminal. If you don't, then you need a phono preamp. The phono preamp will have the terminal. I'm guessing you are connecting to a standard line level input, since that would also give you no sound - you probably need a phono preamp for your setup. As for the light sensor, correct, the turntable won't work properly without it, although it might work to some degree (I've never actually tested it), but the automatic functions rely on that. It may work manually or semi-manually, though; I can't say for sure.

You could remove the platter, make a half turn of the white gear to unlock the arm lift, remove the metal part which is responsible for autoreturn. Mount the platter again and the turntable should be fully manual. You can start and stop it by pressing the power button, but the autoreturn won't work. I didn't do it myself, but I'm 95% confident it will work. I had to do a lot of fixes on mine and I think now I know it well

I have a modern Sony TT, but it isn't anywhere near the quality of this one! It's a basic USB TT, but it sounds great with a audio technica 0.6 mil stylus, and it's "decently safe on records! I'd swap it out for yours any day!

First rule of audio... Never call an ordinary substance by its name. "Plastic" is bulk compound, etc. Paper or cardboard cones for speakers are "fiber", and so on.

There are many different types of what you'd call "plastic". The plastic in a 787 and the plastic in your Bic pen aren't the same thing.

So typical of Sony. Every single connector has to be proprietary and impossible to replace... It is good but it's no Technics 1600 Mk2.

The LX series of turntables were consumer class products mostly sold with complete Sony systems. They were also rather cheap. The top model of the series, the LX5, was listed around 200USD, thats half the price of a new SL1600MK2. So yeah,for double the money you can expect better quality. Anyway,the main issiue today is the low mass tonearm,which makes the number of cartridges that will work optimal rather small. And imho the best solution is,as seen here, a old upper class MM. Cartridges that wont show to their full potential in SL1600MK2 btw.,because they were not intended for medium mass arms.

Your better off buying a new turntable. You get what you pay for

You actually aren't. You have to spend a lot more money to get a turntable of the same quality of even a mid-range turntable of 30 or 40 years ago.

No you are not. New direct-drive turntables are all made in China and you can have luck or get one with serious flaws. Those which are made in the west like Rega, Thorens, Dual, Pro-ject, U-turn, are technically inferior to this one, only mechanical solutions, no high-tech know-how inside. They are basically in the sixties in terms of technology but you will pay for them some money.

you don't understand economics even a $700 new turntable is selling for less than one that originally sold for $500 in 1981, you'd have to convert to today's dollar to understand that to buy what was $500 in 1981 you'd have to spend $3,000 most of today's are crap made to capitalise on a trend same applies to tv antennas. not a single high end turntable or cutting edge from the 80s has been duplicated in the last 10 years. he explained the differences between when companies spent billions in today's dollars on R&D and what today you're getting from companies that don't spend anything on R&D. as the big MFG's did in the late 90s before they stopped making turntables altogether. I'd rather have a top rated Sony or Dennon or Onkyo of yesteryear, how hard is it to use a screwdriver apply greese, clean polish, a actual metal or wood turntable change a cartridge? slight elbow grease and you've got one of the best ever made z for less than today's new garbage MDF or plastic units. Some things new are better (televisions, cd players) but not in the turntable or phonograph amp or preamp dept.
