The notch on the rubber mat is so the it lines up perfectly with the cut out in the mat to match the cut out in the platter for the light sensor to detect the type of record.

I will be interested in what you find out. I have the same turntable . picked it up in 1981- 82. I have issues with when you first activate it and it thinks no record is on the platter and shuts down . hit start again and its fine maybe light leakage to the sensor? It's a nice table, although I have not used it in years after replacing my amp with one that did not have a phono stage. (broke down and picked up one this week)
