Curiousity finally got the better of me and I bought a used '17 Jem Jr WH. Just set it up to my liking and, I have to say, I am impressed thus far. Tuners & Trem seem far better than I expected (based on other reviews/comments). Build quality is very,very good. Great fretwork and the paintwork is flawless. I like the Quantum pups too. The rear profile of the neck is definitely thicker and more noticeably "D" shaped than either my Premium or MIJ Jem but it's certainly not a thick neck - just different. All in all, a great guitar for what I paid. If you want Vai style for minimal money, the Jem Jr is terrific value - especially as a used buy!

I noticed on the advert online the fingerboard is very light like its not rosewood, in fact I know it's not because I build guitars but the one you have here seams to be a beautiful piece of dark rosewood. I hope the one I ordered has a board like that, it's luck of the draw but the lighter one makes it look cheep. Anyone else notice that?

its a very hard reddish wood. And it's very common in south and central America as well as the Caribbean. Redwood has been over exploited so guitar manufacturers switched. still a very good wood and it has a reddish tint, I like it..

Can the bridge be upgraded to either an Edge Zero II or ZR tremolo without having to do additional routing? One of my Ibanez guitars has the same standard double-locking tremolo that the JEMJRSP has, and it's definitely not as stable as the Edge Zero II and ZR bridges in 2 of my other Ibanez guitars. I think the only thing keeping me from buying a JEMJRSP is the stock bridge, but if I can replace it with an Edge or ZR without having to do any routing or cutting, then I'll definitely buy this guitar in the near future.

Great playing and review. FWIW my 2019 Jem 7v-wh has similar finishing flaws- imperfect paint in neck bolt recesses and input jack recess. Rough, un polished paint inside monkey grip. The neck gap on yours is normal for any bolt on as far as I can see- Vais own jems have gaps as far as I can tell from photos!
@guitarpaul36454 жыл бұрын
Hi yes indeed. My original 1980s Jem has a gap at the neck joint, it's covered up by the scratch plate. However, in my experience the back routed Jems have tighter gaps and better finish there, probably because it is more visible.

When i use the trem the guitar goes slightly out of tune. Any ideas?
@guitarpaul36456 жыл бұрын
Hi, mine is pretty good, and stays in tune with medium to heavy bar use. Have you properly tuned using the machine heads before clamping the nut? Sometimes if the machine heads have been accidentally turned after clamping, the strings can slip a little through the locking nut as the tension difference either side of the clamp is high. Try slacking off the clamp, re-tuning and re-tightening the clamp. You could also try new strings, and try making sure all the springs are properly seated.
@Laponea6 жыл бұрын
Guitar Paul cheers. I have adjusted the tremolo, action and truss rod with no luck, regarding tuning stability. I will change the strings tomorrow and see how it goes

Hi Paul, i got a replacement jem jr and it seems ok. I don't want to change the tension of the strings so i don't have to mess around with the set up as at the moment all seem good. I think it has 9-42 from the factory. Am i right?
@guitarpaul36456 жыл бұрын
You know I believe so. I just re-strung mine with 9-42, and the comparing the old strings to new they looked exactly the same gauge. However once I put the new strings on (Ernie Balls) the bridge was slightly too far forward (raised at equilibrium), I guess there are just slight tension differences between brands of strings (I don't know what it came fitted with).
@Laponea6 жыл бұрын
Guitar Paul thanks! And then I assume you just need to tweak a bit the springs of the the trem and you don't need to adjust again , bridge action and trus rod, right?

The paint fading on those old original pink and yellow ones are part of what makes them so desirable. Honestly you can get mid to late 90s reissues with the gotoh tuners and edge original and lo pro the various MIJ with the AANJ heals in a 550 probably not a jem for around 4-700 ish depends on condition that are probably just as nice from a build quality stand point as the original late 80s yeah the pickups changed but most people are going to change them anyway. All that said I still want an original RG550 in desert yellow with the faded paint and the darkened maple neck just for the mojo and how cool they look, due to the wear and tear and paint fading and even though I could get a genesis used for less than half I’d still be willing to go to about 1500 on an original 550 in desert yellow specifically it’s the only color I’d probably pay over about 700 for as I’ve got one of the first mid 90s reissued 550 and it’s been my main fiddle since 95-95 it’s a RG550 Ltd it’s got shark tooth inlays ( rather cheap looking) and a bound rosewood (really dark approaching ebony) I do love the bound board on maple neck rw boards because it looks better and feels better to me. I’ve picked up a couple of JEM JRs and just have regular not been impressed and it’s probably not fair because I know what a mij Ibanez feels like and they’re around 1000 dollars newish and the JRs are less than half but they look good but in my head and they are around a tenth of the price of some of the real nice JEMs so probably hard to find a better super Strat for the money but then again I also prefer RG to Jems however I’d love to have a tree of life or disappearing pyramid inlaid 6 string RG I don’t mind the tiger claw on the JEMS but I just don’t like the Monkey Grip lol
@guitarpaul36452 жыл бұрын
I have a late 80s Desert Yellow Jem which I recently restored. The paint is close to mint, and hasn't faded one bit, despite me regularly using it for 20 yeats. I think the Pink jems faded in sunlight because there was a fault with the paint, which is part of the reason why Ibanez ended the run quickly.

Hey man! love all your content WELCOME BACK CANT WAIT TO SEE MORE VIDEOS/REVIEW ! *** I have some urgent question(s) for you! About your white version of the Jem v7wh PLEASE READ THIS ALL I'd be forever grateful !! So the jemv7wh has finally entered my field of view along side the Jackson Phil Collen . It's none other then this Steve vai Jem v7wh (but it's for 2005 AND HAS A FERNANDES SUSTAINER SYSTEM PUT IN THE NECK) I know there are many iterations however I believe you have the exact same one since it's only a couple years apart! This one is special cause like the Phil Collen it's got a sustainer so to me this guitars are neck and neck no pun intended. When you get the chance in your busy life please please tell me literally everything you possibly can about this guitar the good bad , sound , pickups , feel of the neck , is it almost too thin where the high strings fret out on the neck from pull offs ? , How's the edge pro tremolo is it legit and can handle quite some abuse ? Lastly how can I spot a fake one I'm trying to figure out if the guys is really made in the Japan prestige factory the manufacturer confuses me cause I know theyve switched a few times) and lastly even tho it's not American made at all is this a guitar that you believe can truly last and stack up to USA custom shop axe like the Jackson Phil Collen not? is it really versatile as they say with clean , rock and metal ? I'd love to hear what you have to say since I can expect an honest opinion about the Jem in a non hyped up way since you're a good guy and pretty straight up with your advice and your content! Haha let me know at any time when you have a chance this week what your response is to the above^ I'd really appreciate it cause I want to pull the trigger on a dream guitar hopefully , if anyone else feels like answering this feel free thank you :) Cheers from Canada !

Hi. I don't own a Jem v7wh. I own a Jem777Dy from 1989, a JemP77BFP from 2016 and a new Jem Jnr. However, the Jemv7wh has been the top line Jem for a long time now, and they still make and sell that model. It should be relatively easy to tell if the one you are looking at is fake or not. It is very difficult to replicate the quality of the authentic Japanese Jem. Check the serial no., the pickups should be Dimarzios and the Edge tremolo is never faked (IME). If you are not sure, get someone who knows Jems to look it over. If it's genuine, then it should be a great guitar. But again, check its condition thoroughly. Is the neck straight. Are the frets worn and level? Have they been dressed? You might not want to be paying out for a refret. Personally I think the Jackson Phil Collen model is an absolutely awesome guitar. I don't own one, but they are superb, and I am a big Def Leppard fan. Ultimately It comes down to price, condition, and which you personally like the most. I say again, if you're not sure, find someone who knows guitars to look over them with you. If they're being sold by an honest shop then they should be able to give you fair advice, and they shouldn't be selling fakes either. Cheers

Guitar Paul hey man thank you and I'll say it again thank you for your opinion ! Their isn't too many good in depth reviews of the Jem v7wh on KZbin unfortunately so it's hard to get a full opinion frkm someone honest . So just an update I've determined it's not fake , I need to play the Jem again the neck is more my speed literally now I'm not a wuarter of the player of Steve vai but I hope I get my money's worth for that one in full cause the Phil Colleen wasn't built for speed it was built for Phil - great sound but the neck is a club and the super strat body doesn't favour play in the high frets. Steve vai proportion wise is like me we're same height and same long labky hands/fingers my problem has ways been picking an axe that ends up feeling to tiny fret neck wise so like a toy or too big and clubby with jumbo frets and a fat neck so I can't play fast. The Jem series especially this one jemv7wh looks like the best compromise in that aspect. ONLY THING IN WORRIED ABOUT is the EDGE PRO trem model I heard this is the cheaper version of the original edge and low pro so it's not made by the awesome gotoh. HAVE YOU ever played an edge pro is that what's on your premium ? If so how's it hold up ? To me that trem might be the only weak link if there even is one. Phil Colleen has a rock solid original Floyd but the PC1 is a grand more than the offer I have for the Jem and the pc1 isn't the fastest guitar neck wise which just didn't feel right to me. Hope to hear from you again I appreciate your feedback alot thank you !
@guitarpaul36456 жыл бұрын
Hi. My Jem77BFP has the Edge Zero 2 trem, and it is fantastic. According to the Wiki here ibanez.wikia.com/wiki/Category:Tremolo_bridges the Edge Zero 2 was a bridge fitted to intermediate priced Jems like the Premium models. My 1989 Jem has a Schaller trem. I bought it in 1990 2nd hand, and the previous owner had switched the Edge for the Schaller. I've just had it re-fretted and plan on fitting an Edge Zero 2 to it because that trem is brilliant Going by the wiki, the Edge Pro was only fitted to Prestige models from 2003. It is not Gotoh. There is some issue about the locking bridge studs apparently, but I don't know why. Read about it here .. ibanez.wikia.com/wiki/Edge_Pro However, it certainly doesn't appear to be a 'budget' trem and should be fine. I hear what you're saying about the PC1. Thick necks don't phase me much. But if you want a thin, flat and wide neck the Jem will give you that.
@Ratso_DeLynch6 жыл бұрын
Guitar Paul thank you kindly once again. And I can say I've watched your Jem Jr Jem premium and Jem 777 videos very carefully and really listened to your opinion and sound samples of each ivlike how honest you were with all of them in every area! Probably my last question going off the quality of the jemv7wh vs your other jems even tho yes of course you do not own this model - what is the best way to tell either by assessment or by sound if this edge pro bridge is shite and will last and if the guitar will need a refret job in the future as it is used from 2005 with a sweet sustainer in the neck. No the neck /frets don't sound like ass and play okay so is there something else I should like for to see if those need to be re done ? And in the back cavity how can I tell if the trem is good enough too last what to look for ? I'll only have about an hour hour and half to really look this bad boy over in store probably with my schedule on the weekend before deciding whether or not to buy it. And yes jackson pc1 a real animal no def Leppard pun intended I'd 9/10 the dimarzio distortion isn't dynamic enough for a guitar costing 4200 CAD $$$ plays amazing with fat neck but doesn't cut the cake for fast playing in my eyes so I really want to pursue this Jem model cause it seems like a steal at a used price. Thank you again Paul !!!
@guitarpaul36456 жыл бұрын
Well you can assess the trem by seeing if there is any play when you grab hold of it firmly. If there is, the knife/blade edges could be worn. This sometimes happens when people adjust the action (i.e. turn the bridge posts) without taking the strings off first. Does it flutter well? Does it stay in tune when you do some big pull ups or dive bombs? If so, should be all good. As for the frets/neck. Well you're going to need at least 15 minutes to assess it properly. If the frets are worn, but haven't ever been dressed, it should be real easy to tell. You will see excessive wear grooves in the frets. If it's been dressed, then there may be no wear grooves, but the frets will be significantly lower than when new. Jumbo frets on Jems should be about 0.047 inches (1.2mm) tall when new. Anything less than 0.9 mm (assuming they're been dressed at least once) is going be close to needing a refret IMO. To check if the neck is straight you're going to need a special tool and some time. Set up in the shop, the neck is going to have some relief on it of course, so you're just going to have to press the strings against the frets (at the high and low frets) and check the relief at the 12 fret, and try and make sure that is consistent across all 6 strings. Use a steel ruler/gauge. If it is the neck should be absolutely fine. TBH I'd be surprised if the neck is warped. The previous owners would have had to have stored it with the strings off for a long time, or abused it in some way for that to happen. I wouldn't be scared of a refret if the guitar is otherwise great and a bargain. You could get it refretted with stainless steel jumbo fret wire. I have done this on my 1989 Jem (which I had dressed twice before finally going for a refret), It will probably cost about $250 to $300. But you need to find someone who really knows what they are doing, so research it.

I bought the yellow version from Kenny's Music in Glasgow, I tried a few from different places and yes they vary but this one is excellent, I also have the Premium floral Jem and a few other RG to compare, obviously the Jnr is the Wizard 3 neck so a fraction wider than the Jem but is VERY easy to play, in fact it was faster to set up as I like than the Premium Jem. The pickups are certainly hotter than the Floral and a little more bottom end, more like a Tone Zone and Air Norton voicing than the Gravity Storm but that's why amps have bass, mid and treble controls. Also the Jnr doesn't have the treble bleed cap on the volume control but again, I prefer that and have clipped the treble bleed off my Floral Jem, I like the guitar to warm up as I roll off the volume. One job I did as soon as I got the guitar was to swap the strings to 10-46 D'addario XL set it up a half step down but while I had strings off I polished the frets and with some fine sand paper I rolled the fretboard edge a touch and the fret wire ends...that 20 minute job makes it feel like a well set up Premium Jem. A very stable, gigging guitar for sure.

Kirkcowan Cycles Yes, I didn't mention it, but the frets on the premium Jem are superbly finished. Very highly polished and the edge finish is very nice. The junior jem frets are not as highly polished nor finished as nicely at the edges.

Welcome back and thanks for a fine, detailed review! I was going to question your Maths regarding 1/10 price of a Jem but compared to the Anniversary models at £3K+, I suppose it's not far off... ;-) IMO it's debatable whether the Jem77P-BFP is the best of the Premium Jems. It's certainly the prettiest. However, spec wise, I'd say the Jem70V-SFG takes the prize as it has the same Edge Trem & Evo pups as the Jem7V-WH. OK, I am possibly a bit biased because I bought a 70V and I love it dearly! QC on the Premiums is pretty variable too with some poor finishing to Output Jack cavity and the other areas you mentioned. Neck alignment can be a problem with strings too close to the edge of the fretboard and there have been stories of guitars that were impossible to intonate properly. However, they are great guitars for the money. I really like the Pink Jr too and have been debating buying one. Your review may have pushed me closer to doing so. It's a shame Ibanez increased the price over the White Jr and at the same time swapped out the Quantum pups for Infinities. I think the infitinies have somewhat less clarity and that's a big part of my preferred 'tone'. A great modding platform tho. I might suggest you do some clean tone demo's in future when comparing guitars. It's difficult to really hear a difference with pedals etc. influencing the sound. Apart from that, keep up the great work!!
@guitarpaul36456 жыл бұрын
Hey thanks for the comments. I am really surprised to hear about the quality issues with the Premium Jems. I have only seen one up close though, and that's mine, which is flawless. In fact, to be honest, I would say it is better all round than my original 1989 Jem 777DY, which has a few issues: the inlays are not finished that well (you can see filler) and the paint around the lions claw recess has defects and inclusions. But then we are comparing 2017 manufacturing against 1989 manufacturing. I really like the SFG model, and I hope to get one some day. That colour is so great; Steve said he saw a classic 50s American car in that colour, and Ibanez made him one in the exact same colour! The budget Juniors really are obviously lower spec and quality all round, but mine really plays damn good and sounds great. The notes high up the neck really ring out clear and true when tapping and fast picking, and other cheap guitars I've played usually suffer in that area. I would really like to compare the re-issue Anniversary JEM777DY against my original. I can see from other videos that the re-issues have got one piece quarter sawn neck construction with a scarf joint (just like my original) rather than the 5 piece volute type construction they use today. I just had my Jem777DY re-fretted with stainless steel frets and I'm going to do a custom wiring job with some new pickups I got for it. I'll be making a video soon about it ...
@ThePedroDB6 жыл бұрын
Hi Paul, thanks for your reply. Glad to hear you got your Jem777DY refretted. Stainless Steel is definitely the way to go IMO. It's nice to see some of the new Ibanez models fitted with SS frets as standard now. For example, both the RG & S1070's have this. I think you'll find that the 30th Anniversary Jem777's have the 5-piece (Maple & Walnut) quarter sawn construction with the volute (similar to that on your Premium..). Only the Jem Jr's have the scarf jointed headstock. I doubt I will be getting a Pink Jem Jr now... :-( Why? I spotted a Jem77-FP2 at a great price on eBay last week and simply had to have it. It's been one of my 'dream guitars' for a long time. To me, it's a complete work of art. I can hardly believe it's going to happen. Roll on later this week when I expect delivery!! :-) I look forward to seeing your upcoming review with the modded Jem777DY. You have been duly 'subbed'! All the Best!!

@TDS Be aware that the Trem Post spacing for the Edge and the Ibanez STD DL Trem is not the same, so you might have to 'fill & redrill' to install new posts. The STD DL posts should be compatible with Floyd Rose variants. You mentioned the Gotoh 1996T - Good choice!

Really? I have DiMarzios in my other Jems, and I have to be honest, I really like the pickups in the Junior. They are very high output, and remind me of a Super Distortion.

Just letting you know your fingerboard is rosewood, there isn't a ban on rosewood for companies like Ibanez they have so much rosewood in there factories they could use it on every guitar for years and not run out, it's highly regulated but there are still companies using it. The whole cities thing with rosewood is political and stupid. It makes sense with ebony because people are destroying trees just to get the black heartwood witch is a huge problem but rosewood is not endangered contrary to what many believe I buy it all the time for my builds you just have to keep the receipts if you plan on taking the guitar out of country.

eddie julian Oh OK. I thought it looks like Rosewood, but then the brochure says Jakoba (or something like that). Are they just saying that for the brochure, but then using up their stocks of Rosewood?
