Brodeur was my favorite goalie, Scott Stevens is one of my all time favorite players and I was happy to see him get the cup in 95 as he was a former cap. And those teams were so loaded. Holik, McKay, Daneyko, Rafalski, Madden, Gomez, Elias etc. Those devil teams were stacked. I know ppl complain about their trapping style but I loved a good goaltender battle so it didn't bother me. The goaltending duel between Brodeur and Belfour in g5 of the 2000 final is still my favorite goalie battle ever. Back then was before the Devils, but both Rangers & Islanders had beat reporters from each NY paper that traveled with the team and the hockey teams were given the same coverage as the Knicks. Now hockey doesn't exist until football season's over and ceases to exist again when spring training starts. This period lasts at most two weeks, now that the Super Bowl is played in February. It completely disappears whenever the Rangers are eliminated and the only Devils & Islanders coverage comes from the AP.

It’s a matter of probability. Suppose two teams are equally matched such that each team has a 50% chance of winning any particular game. Coming back from a 3-0 deficit requires winning 4 consecutive games, with a probability of only 6.3% (=.5^4). This estimate is too high though. We should account for the fact that the other team has already won 3 consecutive games and is thus likely to be a better team. To have a majority chance of winning three in a row requires the other team to have won each game with at least a 80% probability (.8^3=51%). So the losing team only has a 20% chance of winning each game going forward. This means coming back to win 4 in row occurs with a probability of only 0.2% (=.2^4).

Leaf Fans: "You know they say that all teams are created equal, but you look at the Leafs and you look at Florida and you can see that statement is not true. See, normally if you go one on one with another team, you got a 50/50 chance of winning. But the Leafs are genetic freaks and not normal! So you got a 25%, AT BEST, at beating them. Then you add Leaf Nation to the mix, your chances of winning drastic go down. You got a 33 1/3 chance of winning, but the Leafs got a 66 and 2/3 chance of winning, because the fans KNOW the Panthers can't beat them and they're not even gonna try! So Florida, you take your 33 1/3 chance, minus the Leafs 25% chance and you got an 8 1/3 chance of winning the series. But then you take the Leafs 75% chance of winning, if they was to go one on one, and then add 66 2/3 per cents from Leaf Nation, the Leafs got 141 2/3 chance of winning the series. See Florida, the numbers don't lie, and they spell disaster for you."

Was that the series Philly vs B’s..where Laviolette called a timeout when Flyers got behind 3-0.. and things turned around. My recollection was the timeout call wasn’t late in the game.. but earlier..and it shifted things..

As a sports fan ive learned never give up on game's or series. I've went to a baseball game The team was down and made a crazy comeback as we listened to it on the radio as we left the stadium. My dad said we're never doing that again. Then I learned from that point never leave a game or series till it's over. My best experience was in 2001 The kings were down three to nothing in the end of the 2nd My brother and his friend wanted to leave since I was driving. I told them I was staying but they left to get something to eat somehow snuck back in after the 3rd. The Kings made a come back to tie it with 53 seconds left in the 3rd, then went and took it in overtime (Frenzy on Figueroa) That's why I never leave a game till it's over

Krejci getting knocked out of the series in game 4 on a hit by Mike Richards was pivotal in that 2010 Philly comeback. As pointed out in the video, the B's used the loss as motivation to sweep the Flyers in 2011 on the road to winning The Cup.

As a Kings fan living in Vegas in 2014 I'll never forget walking past a guy in a Sharks Jersey at a casino and i just said Go Kings Go as I walked past him. He replied 3-0. I always wondered if he regretted being a little cocky. In 2012 being up 3-0 against Vancouver, St Louis, Arizona and New Jersey, I never felt like it was over until the 4th game was won.

You forgot the reason why TOR was able to come back on DET. The coach Jack Adams punched the ref after a controversial end of Game 4 and was suspended for the rest of the series. DET wasn't able to adjust to that.

People talk about the Bruins choke this year and the Lightning choke in 2019, as well as these 4 chokes... but honestly, if the Canucks had been the Presidents Trophy winners in 2011 and lost that game 7, it would've been THE WORST CHOKE IN THE HISTORY OF THE NHL. So again, thank you Burrows (and Campoli lol), cuz man!! Blowing that 3-0 series lead would've been the ultimate failure.

The 75 Islanders not only came back from 3-0 to eliminate Pittsburg, they also came back from 3-0 in the next round (semi-finals) vs the Philadelphia Flyers only to lose game 7. They also lost the first two games vs the Rangers (best of 5) and came back to eliminate them in the first round.

I am old enough and fan enough to have seen the 3 most recent series to come back from 3-0. I think I have learned one thing about them. The thing I think I have learned is that you can't see it happening until it does. Like the game 7 win. The 5 to go to game 7 after 3-0 were other examles of this. I couldn't see it happening until it idi. The 3-0 point is the hardest thing to come back from in all of sports events. IIRC the NBS, which also has the 7 game series format, has never had a comeback. IDK how many games but it must be similar in number to the NHL PO series numbers. Combing the two would result in a large number of failures vs these 4 completions.

Something to add to the 1975 Islanders. In the next round the Flyers took 3-0 series lead and the Islanders came back to tie it at 3! But then the Flyers won game 7 by the score of 4-1.

Leafs need to loosen up and breathe, they're top-heavy and the defense simply is not good enough, but all that means is that the forwards need to do more than on most teams. Matthews and the other Big 4 need to play like MacKinnon and Edmonton's Big two, those three players always make an impact every playoff game.
@andrewptob Жыл бұрын
I believe the Islanders almost came back from 0-3 again in 1975 against the Flyers (the eventual Cup winners). Flyers we’re up 3-0 and Isles forced a game 7. Would’ve been crazy if a team did that twice in the same playoffs.
@cowetascore8476 Жыл бұрын
You are correct. In Game 7, Gary Dornhoefer scored 19 seconds in. Flyers brought in Kate Smith to sing and the Islanders tried to counter it by giving her flowers.

the 1942 comeback by the Toronto Maple Leafs is an interesting story. The Leafs didn't have an answer for Detroit's big defense standing them up at the blueline... the Leafs tried a different approach, which turned out to be successful, winning the next 4 games. This is when "Dump it in hockey" was invented.

Another classic Sharks choke job. They almost did it twice, blowing a 3-0 lead to the Red Wings a couple years earlier. But held on for a win in game 7. Salt in the wound, that game 7 loss to the Kings was the only game 7 loss at home in Sharks history (5-1)

The 1942 Cup final is part of the rivalry between the Maple Leafs & the Red Wings. Why the league separated the two teams, so they can only play each other in Cup finals, is a mystery to fans of both teams. They did to Detroit what they would never do to Boston or New York. It led to several Detroit play offs series being in multiple series with west coast teams. Dreadful for following the play offs in Detroit. The start of the NHL "screws" the Wings, became a fandom claim.

I thought 2010 was a year of destiny for my Flyboys. They didn't qualify for the playoffs until the last day of the season and it took a shootout(which they rarely win) to do it. Then falling down 3-0 to the Bruins then going down 3-0 in game 7 only to come back and win then went to the finals. The finals were tight back and forth games until game 5 when the Blackhawks won 7-4. Then they won the Cup on our ice. We haven't been close since.
