@homer98685 жыл бұрын
TheLocalLt other than Manny’s lazy approach in game 1 I don’t think the outfielding was that bad. Matsui was sprinting to that ball. I don’t think they were roided up either. Ortiz got flagged in 2003 and was probably clean because he was being watched. Roger Clemens, Giambi, and Karim Garcia were no longer Yankees. I think Manny was clean. Mussina, Schilling, and Pedro were definitely clean. Sheffield was flagged earlier so was probably clean because he was being monitored.
@TheLocalLt5 жыл бұрын
mjd5746 mjd5746 the 2003 tests were NOT made public, even to the players, they were never supposed to have leaked 6 years later in 2009. A few guys (I think Ortiz included) sued baseball over it. But bottom line, nobody knew in 2004 about any steroid stuff. That was all in the 04-05 offseason when they put testing in. Also “Manny wasn’t using”. What? The guy got caught using more times than anyone except A-Rod. He still might be the best right handed hitter of all time, the steroid era is what it is, it’s not necessarily their faults. I’m just saying why they didn’t play defense 1) no nerds lopping the manger’s balls off telling him who to play and where and 2) the teams were basically in a multi-year long arms race to vacuum up the most hitting talent. I’ll give you this though: the move that put the Red Sox over the top was the one for defense: getting rid of Nomar and picking up Cabrera, Roberts, and Mienkeiweicz

casey engle Are you kidding me? These games nearly stopped my heart. Hours and hours of agony every night...extra innings, the a-rod whack, walk-offs. It’s the greatest series in baseball history. No one will ever convince me otherwise. It was just exceedingly difficult at the time...especially considering our 2003 heartbreak.
@homer98685 жыл бұрын
manifestgtr so true. It’s easy to forget the fearful part of those last four games because when you watch them now you know the ending. Where as back then, people in New England were cynical about the Red Sox and were always waiting for the other shoe to drop. They always had a little bit of childish hope but they had been let down so many times in the past.
@homer98685 жыл бұрын
Also it’s crazy how so many big games come down to the smallest things. If Ortiz triple in game 1 has 3 more feet on it it’s a 3 run hr and the game is tied. Judging by the Red Sox momentum late in the game they could’ve easily won that one. Series starts with Red Sox up 1-0. Completely different vibe.

After game 3 and them losing game 4 before the comeback, I just really started accepting defeat and compartmentalizing everything. "okay if they get this hit, they can tie." I was just happy it wasn't a sweep. The next game, i was happy they won another. Game 6, I really thought it was unreal. Game 7 was something of a tease thinking we'd lose. But every.single.play mattered and if any play went the other way, it would be a different story. This really was like a feel-good movie script.

That Roberts vs Rivera duel for the stolen base in Game 4 was as epic as it gets. An absolute turning point for the story
@thewitchking8522 жыл бұрын
That's exactly why when people tell me "baseball is boring" I just simply chalk it up to not understanding the game. Its a chess game of situations and I love the fact that though a team game its those individual decisions and "duels" you get in close games (especially the playoffs) that can change the course of a game, a season, or hell even a franchise. "The Steal" kickstarted the Red Sox 21st century run. It may just be the most important Red Sox moment and is far too overlooked

David Ortiz (as Tom Brady) was a WINNER. The times where it mattered most, when it was needed most, when it was most implausible, are when he “showed up”! Some players simply CAN’T win the big one (great stats/regular seasons/career but gone when truly needed). Not David. He was a genuine inspiration. Unlike Brady, he’s still the affable, charming, charismatic, man he’s always been (AND he thrives as an example of successful immigration)! You gotta give it to Dave Roberts he stole that base and the way he ran from second all the way home was amazing, he was a bullet. However none of this could have been possible without our Big Papi David Ortiz. I swear you don't know how hard it was to be a Red Sox fan up until 2004. The amount of times we got soooo closed and would lose was heartbreaking. Just the year before this in 2003 we were 5 outs away from going to the World Series when Grady Little decided to leave Pedro Martinez in. After we lost that game it felt like my hear was shredded to pieces. Watching every game possible dedicating all this time getting your hopes up to just see them lose at the end was heartbreaking. I swear we deserved that 2004 World Series after all the pain us Red Sox fans had been through it was well deserved. It was great re watching this after all these years, man the Yankees were a powerhouse of a team. Just hearing all those great names again you remember how exciting and competitive games use to get. This series was better than the 04 WS. Even if they did break the curse that year, down 0-3... unheard of.

In my mind the 2003 ALCS and the 2004 ALCS are inexorably linked. I'm still upset that Grady Little left Pedro in when he was obviously gassed. And the next year we get all this other crazy shit. I'm a lifelong Red Sox fan, so I'm obviously biased, but these 2 years seem like baseball at its peak. Even though we've won 3 more World Series since 2004, this was the one that broke 86 years of futility.

Agreed...2004 exorcised '67; '75; '78; '86; '88; and 2003 Forever, not to mention the ghosts of 1946 & '48 subway series what-if's

Imagine how the Yankees, their fans, and management felt when after that last out they realized they blew a 3 game lead... I mean "wow".

I didn't become a baseball/Dodgers fan til 2009 but one of the few things i remember from my high school years was seeing my teacher (big Sox fan) and classmate (big Yankees fan) trash talking each other before class. It had to be about this series. Its crazy how many ties the Dodgers have to the players from this series. Joe Torre eventually became our manager and Dave Roberts is our current manager.

This was undoubtedly the most magical time to be a Red Sox fan.. 2003/2004 You could not buy a ticket to get into Fenway those years the entire season..It felt like it would never end especially when they won again in 2007.. City of Champions !! Can't wait for the next one

You can just see the Yankees getting careless. Thanks for the vid, lots of nostalgia. I wasn't much of a sports fan at the time, was in 5th grade and mostly just played outside/watched cartoons. This was the series that made me care about baseball. 2007 even more, but 2004 was more memorable

The Red Sox-Yankees games back in the late 90s - early 2000s was something else. The regular season games felt like the playoffs when they were battling it out for 1st in the AL East. Then to have back to back years of 7 game ALCS with the Red Sox-Yankees was just insane. To come back from an 0-3 deficit against that Yankees team was the impossible. After the Red Sox won that series you knew they were going to win the WS.

This is some amazing baseball!!! My dad, a lifelong Red Sox fan, was going wild when this was happening. As an Astros fan, I hope they can pull off the same feat in 2020 after being down 3-0. Tomorrow they play game 7 and am looking forward to seeing if they can win in Red Sox 2004 fashion.

A valuable lesson this series taught me about baseball is, it doesn’t matter what you do one game or 2 games or 3 games. Until you win 4 games and take the series, the other team is never out of it.

Like Ortiz is celebrated despite getting caught also? Double standard. Also, im not the biggest Arod fan but only a blind fool would say he isn't a good analyst. He's a fantastic analyst, regardless what you think of him as a sportsman he's a great analyst, smart, knowledgeable baseball guy.
