Episode Notes:
1. Units tested good with the Mega SD -
Model 1 and 2 US and Japanese Genesis/Mega Drive Systems.
Mega SG from Analogue
2. Units that work but do not have CD soundtracks without modification:
Sega Nomad
Retroad Compact Clones
3. In game menus and reset do not work with SMS or 32X games.
4. I got most of the Sega CD, SMS, and Genesis libraries on a 64GB micro SD card. The Mega SD supports up to a 400GB FAT32/exFAT micro SD card.
5. The Mega SD supports both the internal save area of the Sega CD, as well as the Back Up RAM Cart, both saved to the memory card on a per game basis. In effect, you can save until your hearts content.
6. Paired with a Mega SG, not only does it reduce the size and power consumption of the original combo, it also gives you nearly perfect Sega CD games in 1080p.
7. Music in this episode.
Opening - Batman Returns Driving Stage
2:00 - Ecco CD Jurassic Beach
6:18 - Devastator Track 5
9:29 - Sol Feace Cosmic Illusion
10:54 - Lords of Thunder Ending Credits
8. I tried a few 1st and 3rd party controllers with the device to check compatibility. I ran into no issues that I noticed.
9. I own 4 original Sega CD models. A Model 1 and 2 US Sega CD, and a Model 1 and 2 Japanese Mega CD. Of the 4, 3 have had failures of some kind, with 2 of those 3 currently not working correctly at the time of this video.
10. Mega SD was paid for with my own money and not sent to me free to review.

The Mega SD is a great product, but the unfortunately the company behind it isn't. TerraOnion has a history of terrible customer support and sketchy behaviour. Their latest screwup were the Mega SD preorders. In the timespan between taking the preorders to shipping they moved their business from Spain to Andorra for tax reasons. This saved them a few bucks but screwed over every EU customer that preordered. Now an additional 60-80€ (in top of the already expensive price of 250€) in import fees and taxes have to be paid. Of course they didn't warn or inform any of their preorder customers of this move and it wasn't stated on their ordering page. They also won't admid they screwed up or offer any kind of apology or compensation. Most of you viewers from the US won't care because import taxes don't affect you much, but we in europe have to factor this in for any purchase of this kind. TerraOnion took that option away from the customers. They also did a lot of questionable stuff reagrding theier previous product the SSDS3. I strongly advise everybody to think hard if they want to do business with a company like this.

Back in 1993 I had Mega CD II and all I can say the Mega SD worth each €uro I paid for it. Its a shame Sega abandoned the Mega CD with games like Final Fight CD, Batman Returns CD, Bari Arm, Terminator, Sonic CD, Snatcher, Silpheed, Mickey Mania, etc etc...ahh the 90s, the golden age for gamers I miss them so much.

I bought one of these at a Rite Aid (local pharmacy chain for those unfamiliar with it) for maybe $40 or $50 as a surprise gift for my daughter. Long story short: Sounded too good to be true... because it was. The new 2018/2019 Flashbacks have SD card slots not needing a $300+ flash cart to play 32x and Sega CD. The Custom CD tracks seems like a really good feature, haven't heard of others doing that before. Ha most anything from Sega in the past decade has been pure garbage where have you been?! People just really love pour their "hate" into those flashbacks and ignore how Sega has ripped them off and abused their "fans" with subpar crap for Decades huh? So instead of wanting Sega to maybe just implement some quality control and make At Games step their game up so we have consoles with Controller Cartridge and SD ports you would rather they just don't bother?!?!?!?! What about all the streams of constant trash that "actually have the Sega name written all over then" they released the past decade that's ok tho because it's actually made buy Sega and there's no easy scapegoat?

@whickervision742
@whickervision742 5 жыл бұрын
@@Charlie-eq3dj simplest analogy of a hardware sprite is the mouse cursor on a PC screen. It's a limited size object that can move around freely without affecting anything underneath it. So, naturally, there can only be a certain number of them, and only a handful can be visible on any given horizontal line. "No sprite limit" would remove the horizontal restriction.

Also, I've never owned a Sega CD, and I've wanted Sonic CD since it was firsr released. Thanks for the great review; I've been living under a rock and hadn't heard about this hardware! 12:19 also reminds me of one last thing that might be worth investigating if you're curious: Pier Solar (a cartridge game released in 2010) comes with a companion soundtrack CD that the cartridge game can optionally use (the cart also has an FM+PSG soundtrack on-board). The soundtrack CD is also not redbook audio, it's some sort of at least loopable, possibly compressed, format. This is the only game I've ever heard of where the game itself is on a cartridge, but is also able to use the Sega CD as a slave device. Since I think this may be the only game that ever uses the Sega CD this way, plus the game itself being the only 64 megabit game with some sort of special on-board hardware to facilitate the memory expansion, I'm certainly curious if the experience of that game can be fully reproduced preserved on the Mega SD.

in all actuality, after watching your video about Blast 16, I'd pass on this. It's not actual sega Hardware. So to save a lot of money, it's a Raspberry Pie all day. After you get everything together, it's still cheaper.

These devices aren't really meant for people that are ok with a rpi or emulation. The CD part is kind of an acception people will make because the original units are aging. It doesn't really matter personally to me how people choose to play games, but this device isn't really meant for just anyone, but for a certain subset that demands perfection. It's kind of a niche market, even more so than a regular everdrive.

I took a look at their site and it's quite the expensive unit at around 230 Euros. Granted, it's essentially an all in one cart, so the price is about on par with a CDX or X'eye, systems that essentially combine the Gen+Sega CD. Plus, this plays Master System games (not that I have too many of those games I'd actually want to play) Also, it's free shipping, so that's good to hear for those of us in the US. I'm not sure if it comes with a 400gb card but if it does, then it's definitely worth the purchase. My Model 2 and my Saturn have both been amazingly durable. FAR more durable than my PSX proved to be - the CD rails wore out on that. Glad it has FM support for SMS. However it is annoying that you can't use it with a Sega CD hooked up... I might just pick up a cheaper X5 flash cart for Genesis ROMs instead. Still, for those without a working Sega CD this is the ultimate option right now. I'd bet this is a blast with a modded Nomad.

It won't work when the actual Sega CD add-on is hook up cause then the Sega Genesis won't be able to tell which is which. The FPGA in the Mega SD already disguised perfectly as a hardware for the Sega CD, to still hook-up the actual hardware and use the Mega SD will confuse the Genesis as to which hardware is the real one and since the Genesis couldn't tell which is which it will refuse to load both. It's like if you had a girlfriend and she had an identical twin sister who you don't know about then when you meet both of them on the same day with both wearing the same clothes and talk very much a like, wouldn't you be confuse too? That's why you take off the Sega CD when you're using the Mega SD cause then the confusion would be clear out.

Get out of here... you said you tested the 2017 model don't act like you don't know what it's called. Like i said newer model has a SD card slot and you can download a firmware update that allows Sega Cd and 32x emulation. Yes the Emulation isn't the greatest we all know that but Controller, Cartridge and SD ports along with 10 save states per game INCLUDING games that aren't built in is far from garbage but whatever continue to ignore how it is still the best of all the mini's and classics. (they are all cheap garbage) (if you want Genesis games to play as close as possible, stick with the original system or use PC emulation)

I'm curious about how the hardware works, as this doesn't go into the same slot as a real Mega-CD. Can it just access all the same lines via the cart slot or is there something cleverer at work here?

Great review and video! Thorough, well spoken, and nicely put together. I would LOVE to have one of these, but it is out of my budget atm. Eternal Champions: Darkside, Final Fight CD, Shining Force CD, and Road Rash are some I was surprised didn't get mentioned....as well as Mickey Mania. But glad you showed lots of Snatcher, EWJ SE, Silpheed, Vay, and Lords of Thunder, GREAT titles. Time to start selling off some stuff to buy one of these guys. Now if only there was a way to get 32X on this through the Mega SG...it'd be literally "all that". Every Megadrive game for every peripheral.

It looks amazing but that price ain't worth it for me. My Mega CD still works just fine and it's easy enough to burn games for that I can't afford to buy. If they come down in price one day - I would definitely consider it as an Everdrive replacement.

I didn't feel I had to. This is an FPGA Sega CD and flash cart, which I stressed many times, nothing more. EDIT: And I mean that in a "if this was a FPGA 32X, it would have been advertised heavily as such" kinda way. It just never genuinely occurred to me to need to clarify that.

Very good review, and thorough as well. The existence of this product was a surprise to me, as I didn't realize it was possible to replicate a Sega CD through the cartridge port. Very cool that it is possible. It looks like a good product. The price is high, but I look at the price of flash carts compared to the price of the games when they were current. Considering how much work goes into these and how small their market is, the cost being around the same as five or six games isn't so bad. Or you could look at it compared to the price of the system back then. Obviously things have changed over time, so the value won't be the same for everyone. Good to see the original-hardware guys have another option because, as you say, the actual hardware can be quite annoying. I like software emulation, myself, but options are good. I also wanted to say that it was cool to see Devastator featured. I wanted to try that one for a while and finally did a couple of years back and I liked that one a lot.

Before the existance of the mega sg, i was always thinking that in case we want to play sega cd games on the trough the everdrive on the genesis, that we have to mod those sega cd games into a clusterchain format by splitting it into sections of 4MB and load each one after another trough the everdrive,, and my idea was that the cd sound should had to be converted & mixed into single channel 8bit sound, in order to make them comprimisibly run on the genesis that way,,, however, the mega sg save us the need to do such thing as it would,ve took forever 😀😀

True story. I had to change the disc player and internal structural parts three times. In one case, it cost me a piece of media because the failure scratched the discs by letting them spin wildly. As I am from Brazil, the offer of games was very limited, and I ended up playing some classics years later, by emulation.

Has anyone tried this with a JVC X'Eye? I know that Terraonion said it worked with all official Sega produced consoles, but with the X'Eye having the CD drive built in, I'm curious if it will work. Also curious if the FM produced by the unit is via the FPGA, or if it relies on the existing PSG chip to be present, which is why the Powerbase Mini FM doesn't work in the X'Eye. It'd be nice to be able to have this for my X'Eye, so I can have the clean SCART video output I enjoy from it to my OSSC, without also having to get my model 1 back out of storage. Good overview, and it really looks like an outstanding product!
