Smart vid. Very beautiful trio. I like how you mentioned ending the interaction before they are spooked. While an important tactic for trust, it sucks because you might only have so much time to chill with your reps, whether its a beardie or a nile. Better in the long run, but sometimes you just want to hang! ;)

I started that way out with my water monitor, and he was very anxious and nervous and would never want to come up to me, now I can pick him up and pet him (still does not like his tail touched), he still has anxiety and freaks at sudden movements, and always wants to run and explore the house.

I'd probably say water monitor. Monitor lizards as a whole are good bit more aware of their surroundings and remind me very much of a crow or a parrot. Tegus are more like very old, sweet dogs.

Agile Reptiles definitely monitors, there are several monitors that are considered the smartest among the lizard species

BTW, petting the face might be ok when they're this small, but when grown, they can bite off more than one finger in one bite; I'd highly recommend approaching them with your hand in a fist so there is nothing for them to clamp down on.

Nile monitors might look similar but have a much worse attitude. Most of them stay in A-hole mode.
