Can you do a video of how to tame ackies or other dwarf monitors please cheers
@scrubjay93
@scrubjay93 3 жыл бұрын
@@King-Great The process of socialization would be pretty much the same. It's the same for almost all species, building that trust moment by moment. They say ackies are tough to tame when they are young because young monitors are very skittish, especially smaller species. Some say let them grow up a little and they will be easier to socialize. Frequent interactions that are positive for the reptile--never stressing it out. I'm doing it right now with some unsocialized rescue rats. I imagine you have to be even more patient with a lizard, since they aren't nearly as smart or socially oriented as rats. It's much easier to tame/socialize an animal with treats, tiny ones, frequent. Not sure if that is counterproductive with a lizard, but it would be a bad idea with a snake. :) I don't know if these guys have any small monitors, but there are lots of other people working with Ackies since they have gotten more popular.

@@scrubjay93 cheers bro appreciate your time taken to give me your take on taming process and you are right young ackie are skittish mines about 4 coming up 5months now one minute I think am getting somewhere next minute it reverts back to hiding or running away once it spots me coming so il give it space n from time to time try interacting and yh I suppose working with small mammals compared to dwarf monitors are totally different with ackies a lot of patients needed apparently think am lacking in that department lool

These amimals are amazing. Sadly, there are some out there that just don't understand that these animals are highly intelligent and feel things. They just swear at the animal, hardly spend time with it, care is not understood and other little things I have noticed in some (just an observation, not accusing any particular reptile creator). Every reptile owner should not only understand the basic husbandry for their animal but also understand behaviour, anatomy, health, feeding, breeding and more. How can you keep an animal healthy and low stressed if you don't know the major aspects of your reptile? I just love to listen to those that have more knowledge than me. Speaking and learning about animals is what calms the anxiety and overwhelming feeling I have with my ASD.

This is nice, a new video with good information and no "action" ... no screaming, no running, no taunting the reptiles to get them to hiss or trying to bite... I stopped watching those live streams... just calm, thinking, knowing humans being kind and interacting calmly with animals that will never be "legal" in my country. As usual, Kevin knows what he is doing.

I was a dog trainer for years and I thought along these same lines when working with rescues that had fear of humans. If a dog has a fear of humans, something has always happened to that dog that is deserving of that amount of fear. Gaining their trust has been the most rewarding thing I’ve ever done. These videos are so important. I watch a channel where this guy has a black dragon. The black dragon is petrified of him and it’s obvious why. So sad.

Hi Kevin , I just wanted to say that I have noticed that a lot of what you're talking about also pertains to snakes in some ways . Last year you helped me out immensely by explaining to me why my baby Brooks King was scared to come out during the day . Once I understood that , a lot of things fell into place. His tank was in a high traffic area , so I decided to cover the front and sides with paper and slowly and I mean weeks and months , I would remove a little at a time . I have to tell you that I'm very in tune with my snake because of the way you explained that fear behavior. For instance I cut a little window out in the bottom of the paper and I would find him peaking out looking for me . Now he's a year old and though he's still seems to be more of a night owl . I take him out very often and he's just become such a great personable pet. Thanks again Kev . To own one of your beautiful dragons is on my bucket list.

When you get Kevin to talk he’s a wealth of information. I try to use his techniques when handling, a short time each day, end the session on a positive mode and just never threaten the animal. I thank Kevin and others for instructing me correctly on husbandry and care for my little guy. Glad they peaked my interest in reptiles.

I really love these videos. I had reptiles when I was younger and just started collecting again. I love reptiles but I am thinking my mindset was different when I was younger. These videos are helping me to understand my little pets better. Ok, I don't own a monitor and most of my pets are calm but the two babies I bought I hope to get them to trust me and know me better. I had a Burmese python and got her as a little worm. Never had one problem with her, she never tried to bite me she was the best. Had to sell her when she was 12' long because I had a small apartment in NY and I was having a baby. It killed me. So years later I am starting to collect smaller reps but they still need me to have that attention I gave her. These videos help!

It just wouldn't be fair to the precious lil guy, I have just enough time for my Beardies and My Ball pythons. I live in Kansas, so keeping most reptiles is a bit of a roller coaster, but I have plans on opening a reptarium of my own one day and be able to Spread the love and knowledge these reptiles can bring!! I'm a HUGE fan, and I've been taking notes since I've discovered the channel. If you're ever looking to get into monitors, spend the extra money and buy one from this guy. When I'm ready for one I will be getting mine from him. I definitely don't plan on breeding but I haven't ruled it out completely either. But I would much rather just have one as a pet first and foremost. I've seen every video of every single person working with monitors and this guy is one of the best I've seen at reproduction, General care and telling you what you're getting into and most importantly giving you the honest assessment of what you're getting yourself into. Monitors are no joke and a lot of these guys that keep gigantic monitors can make it look easy, but the truth is they have years of practice and Captain's bread animals that have been socialized right out of the egg for multiple Generations. These are extremely intelligent lizards that require a lot of care and socialization to get them to the point of puppy dog tame as some people like to call it.

Kevin I am so glad that there are people like you who give the certain atmosphere in and perspective of keeping snakes and reptiles are in such an educational and intellectual show. You bring into the hobby information that viewers would need access to the.most expensive and experienced reptile vet. You not only share through demonstration , you explain at a level most people realize requires years of experience and a lot of education. Whether it is from assisting a vet, others with the knowledge who will share, or the ability to access the information, the intelligence to understand it and the skill to actually perform (safely) what is needed. Many people see that they can't do what you do so the call a vet or stay away from animals to dangerous for them and start with safer ones while learning. You are so generous with your time and skills. Thank you from me, Melinda Dennis, and all your fans who have know idea how to find a private way to tell you. I couldn't find any. Have a wonderful day look forward to seeing you on Social Media and Expos. I am real new. Have a Leopard gecko and a wild caught brown anole. Both doing great so far.

I’m so curious, do you think eventually as you keep breeding monitors and giving them a totally different experience from birth that your blood lines could eventually evolve mentally to not be so scared when they hatch?

It would possible take 50-100 more years, a notable change seems to take at least 10 generations in any given species. For 100 generation, probably more, those who react first and run from danger, live long enough to grow big and reproduce. I expect that is why the woman in Russia tells people, the Foxes she has breed for over 50 years are not tame... i.e. domesticated... but that can just be mistranslation.

Well we make some very calm babies from calm bloodlines but it’s anecdotal at this point. K
