If I dare speak for anyone other than myself, I'd say that the main reason anyone watches your channel, Wes, is not because of the subject matter. It's because of you. We like spending time with you much in the same way children like Mr. Rogers. You are genuine, no hangups, funny, incredibly talented, smart AF, and generally have a great attitude. Just keep making the videos you would want to watch and screw whatever noise is going on otherwise. In a world where I have deliberately tuned out of all news and social media, WWW is an oasis of humanity. Avoid the "Aptate of Despair" (or whatever that was).

Does anyone remember in which video Wes talking about that concept of "Aptate of despair"? I cannot remember if it is even spelled that way... EDIT: it should be "ASYMPTOTE OF DESPAIR" - thank you @rinardman for putting me on the right track. Wes talked about it in the video from May 2024 titled "Mechanic wires and reluctantly paints the office/loft", circa 34:15 minute mark, for those interested. Quote from Wes below: “ [...] if we plot progress versus time it should be pretty much linear. We are currently right about here approaching the danger zone between works and done and those two things are not the same we have to be very careful not to get sidetracked at The Works boundary and end up over here on the Asymptote of Despair where time goes to infinity and we never quite finish our project”

Hi Wes. I felt compelled to write a comment to share why I watch the videos. I've thought about it a lot, and came up with 3 reasons. 1. You've always been honest with us. This video is a prime example of that. You've shared with us your successes and also your failures. This helps all of us know that the content you create is genuine. And as someone who has made many of the same mistakes you have (and more!), I really appreciate that. 2. I like learning. I am a science teacher by profession, but I genuinely enjoy learning about all things. You have such a depth and breadth of knowledge that we are always learning something. I appreciate that. One thing I've learned in my life is to find someone that knows a LOT about something, and learn everything you can from them. I feel like I get that with this channel. 3. You. We like you. When you make a video, it's like hanging out with a friend. When you make a video where you run into a problem, and sigh, say some deadpan joke, and then get on with it, it honestly helps all of us get through the challenges we have in our own lives. Thank you, Wes, for spending your time with us. Many of whom you'll never meet. You are a household name in my house, and I truly appreciate all of your efforts to make content interesting. I am like you, and enjoy the content you create. Best wishes for a happy and prosperous 2025. Thanks again.

I'm in the "I'll watch whatever content you make" crowd, because we have somewhat similar interests, and your style is easy for me to watch and actually learn some nuggets here and there :) The ever-changing YT algorithm is a beast, for sure, but if you can make enough from this to make it worthwhile, then I'm one random vote on the internet that says "hang in there!" Your editing and storytelling skills are excellent, regardless of the content! Re sponsors - eh, it's noticeable when other channels shill for something; the nice creators put their plug section in a chapter to make it easier to skip. I'm a premium YT member so I never see ads of any kind anyplace, so I have no sense of how bad that part of YT is for non-premium users. But like you I value my time, and time watching or having to skip ads is not worth the $13 a month or whatever it costs these days... Can't wait to see how 2025 goes for you and your family! Kudos for investing time in yourself. I wish I'd done that when I was turning 40 (almost 20 years ago now!)...

I've watched videos made by other KZbinrs about how the platform ages out creators. The algorithm is your friend early on and then it throws you over. There's a curve up and then a steady decline. It's not just Wes. It's just how the platform works. There's some controversial creators that KZbin actively works against. At least Wes isn't in that group. His content is safe. He's not a guntuber or an overt conservative.

I've never felt compelled in previous video's to thank you for how concise and to the point they are, not wasting my time or yours in the process. I'm not wired in a way that has me watching a movie every time I sit down to peruse KZbin - I have a job, a life and a 1 acre property to look after - my time is precious, and that you respect that with your content is one of the reasons I subscribed. Not a big fan of shorts, but I'm always a believer that you need to go where people are, and if there is a set of viewers who like the uber short form content, than don't limit yourself and reach out to them. I'm not a mechanic by trade, or inclined that way (lost my dad super young who could have passed on a wealth of experience in the field), yet your videos, Diesel Creek's and Rainman Rays has given me a bit of confidence to dip my toes into things I had never considered before - so you've reach me where I am, and the pride you take in your channel and your standards are responsible for that. You are exactly correct on your take for the videos - keep them up and going. A lot of folks appreciate your concise and honest take on the repair of the items that you deal with - especially the fact that you are located where you are (road/salt/rust/repair/upkeep/routine maintenance, etc.). Keep them coming as a lot of the silent majority never respond. Thanks!

I agree with you on long videos. About 30 minutes is all I'm interested in watching. I see the long ones and either skip all the way through it or just pass it by. I hope you keep doing what you do, you're one of the few great ones in my opinion.

We share the same sentiments, ive been a machinist for 20 years, when i hit 40 last year, just felt less and less like setting up machines all day. Made the decision earlier this year to take care of myself better, lost 40 lbs(still going), started walking, started working the brain muscle a little more. Goal for this year is to cut back on the doom scrolling and get to a more normal sleep schedule. Keep up the great content, and I do appreciate the concise nature of your videos, but would watch more if you had more

I wasn't going to watch this video cause I didn't think I wanted to see a re-cap of videos I've already watched. The monolog at the end made it 100% worth my time. I would guess some folks are single topic viewers, only care about mechanics or machine work. Others like Wes and will gladly watch whatever you do in front of a camera. You'll probably not be able to satisfy all viewers all the time. However, but the variety of topics keep us coming back for more. Keep up the good work and happy 2024!

I’ve learned so much from your videos. Your automotive content, mechanical engineering insights, shop updates, and everything else you create are incredibly interesting to watch. But I’ve always wondered… why? Today, you gave me the answer, along with another important lesson: honesty. Honesty with the people around you, with everyone who shows interest in your work and the content you produce, and above all, with yourself. Sincerely, thank you for that.

Unbelievable projects makes the channel all good. Nice to watch an intelligent person explaining procedures of how things work and repaired. The building upgrade is fantastic.
@tonster043 күн бұрын
I'll be honest, I do miss the car repair videos at a regular clip, but also, I consume that type of content in several other places as well, so I still can fulfill that need. Places like Rainman Ray's, South Main Auto, and Pine Hollow. I think I just miss your humor while doing them. I'm sure you'll continue to toss one at us once in awhile though. :) That said, I've also been fascinated by a number of your projects, and would definitely look forward to seeing more. That type of content is *not* something I see on a regularly basis elsewhere, so is really much more appealing to have you do more of something I can't really find elsewhere than another brake job. So I see it both ways, but definitely welcome the projects and hopefully we get a few of them this year! One thing that would be interesting, especially if you're going to be doing larger concept projects, is seeing them come out in a similar format to how Ivan does a lot of his larger diagnostic videos that end up spread out over 5 or 6 videos. Sometimes that can get a little annoying, but also it can be nice to see a portion of the project at a time and see it all come together. I don't know what projects you're looking at or how long they'll take, but that sounds more like how you covered the building of the office and loft over several parts. Regardless, I look forward to seeing more!

My wife and myself have been the most important things in my life also. I gave myself to my machinist and mechanic job for over 42 years and although getting a retirement plan from it , i still listen to young green mechanics saying that they know all they need to know about cars. I still watch your videos for automotive content ,But, you have machines that have been a major part of my life in the fact that a horizontal or vertical machine is the same basic design as the next. I personally enjoy all of your content from sharpening a drill or tool bit to applying them to a piece of metal. And fixing a tractor is nothing that i will be doing in my older years but i think it is extremely important to keep those skills alive in the younger generation. As my colleagues at the machine shop say , nobody wants to do this stuff anymore! Keep up doing what you choose to share with us and don’t miss out on a good date night with your special lady!

I love all your content. You're the main reason I find KZbin so interesting, and yes, I'll admit to feeling a little disappointed when your schedule is off and I don't get a dose. However, I realize that's just the way things roll, and your stuff is certainly worth waiting for. A little delay just means something good's on it's way. Your getting into whatever catches your attention is great! Figuring out problems, creative solutions, messing it up and not being deterred, working without help (!!!), it's all fascinating. Keep following your instinct, I'll certainly follow along. Fixing things is great, creating new things is even better. Thanks for being out there!

I’m not a retired engineer or mechanic or even worked in any machine industry or jobs, I’m not in the best of health and the highlight of my week or whatever is when you release a video or a short, I always learn from you but I think one of your assets is your dry sense of humour and your interactions with your family including max is so refreshing. What I’ve learned from watching your videos is just the sheer amount of work needed to output a video, filming, editing, recording, equipment, content, lighting all that alone is a massive job. The most important thing is you and your family, your health is the greatest gift we have so take care.

I’ve been a subscriber since well before you moved to your current location. Your channel is my favorite, and this comes from a guy who knows nothing about fixing cars or the other things you do. It’s the content, the length, the humor, your knowledge and the things I learn, the cool little drawings you do to teach us, everything and a million other reasons. You are the only content creator I support on Patreon, and the only one whose video I’ll watch no matter the subject. I loved the drill sharpening episode and I can’t tell you why other than it was because you made it. Keep at it. You’ll always have one view per episode.

I found your channel through Eric O, Pine Hollow, and Scanner Danner. What I most appreciate about your channels are your common traits that include curiosity, perseverance, hard work, sharing of attained knowledge, etc., etc., but most of all your honesty and acknowledgement of mistakes and/or roadblocks to success. The payoff, regardless of length of video, is the satisfaction and pride all of you convey when a job is completed to success, knowing you did it right and to the best of your ability and effort. It gives us all a sense of accomplishment right alongside of you, most likely because we've been there a time or 2 ourselves. Any content you put out I know we can reliably count on the same attributes being brought to any project regardless of what it entails. We also know those attributes exist whether it's on YT or not. Keep up the great work.

In this weird algorithm age, your videos stand out the most as being genuine and I think I gravitate towards that. Your sense of humor and knowledge of all things is very entertaining. Hope 2025 brings you great success and looking forward to the new style of content!

That being said, my favorite videos of yours are resurrections because unlike every other page that does them, you actually will follow through and properly fix things and really teach us something. Here’s to a great 2025, I hope you can take care of yourself. I’m down 100 pounds and since I switched careers from manual labor I’m feeling awesome. Hard to believe how inflamed my body used to be.
