Here's a look back at one fleet of buses that left a mark in the MTA Bus fleet, the leased 2017 New Flyer XE40 "Xcelsior CHARGE" Battery-Electric bus fleet.
The MTA conducted a 3-year program in which they were to test two of the most popular fleet of electric buses at that time, the Proterra Catalyst, and the New Flyer XE40 "Xcelsior CHARGE". The Proterras were based out of Grand Avenue Depot, and the XE40s were based out of Michael J. Quill Depot. The XE40s were numbered 0011-0015, whereas the Proterras were numbered 0016-0020.
The XE40 fleet primarily ran on the M42 and M50 early on. They had their fair share of teething issues as they were unable to stay out for a full service cycle at first, but as time went on, these buses became more and more reliable. Eventually, these buses were able to operate on routes outside of the M42 and M50 lines, making appearances on the M9, M22, and the M66 & M72 lines. These buses were able to live out it's 3-year lease with little issues, and were out almost every day during that time.
What you'll see here are several videos of the New Flyer XE40 fleet in service on the M42 and M50 lines. They were basically powered by Siemens powertrain systems.
