Fifty years ago, the "Battle of Versailles" put American models on the map. The event, held just outside of Paris, saw American designers and models dress for battle against the French fashion industry. The catwalk made fashion history, introducing models and designers of color to the runway. Michelle Miller has more.
"CBS Saturday Morning" co-hosts Jeff Glor, Michelle Miller and Dana Jacobson deliver two hours of original reporting and breaking news, as well as profiles of leading figures in culture and the arts. Watch "CBS Saturday Morning" at 7 a.m. ET on CBS and 8 a.m. ET on the CBS News app.

Fashion in the 70s was soooo exciting! I was 18 yrs old in 1973, and just starting in college (at Pratt Institute, in the Fashion Department). It was the best time of my life. The Battle of Versailles was EVERYTHING!

Well done! What great coverage of this historical event in fashion and diversity. Thank you for sharing the realities of how the models of color were treated and also how they stole the hearts of people worldwide with their flavor! I was a young girl and don’t remember this event, but it was around that time that I fell in love with fashion, with groundbreaking Model, Beverly Johnson, and not long after Iman and Peggy Dillard in mainstream print magazines. What an inspiring time!

As a black woman (and former journalist), this was a well-intended segment, but very awkward. 😬
