Really sad that Derby, Crewe, & Swindon Works are now just a thing of the past. As a Midland Railway Enthusiast this 😭😭😭😭😭😭 but thanks for recording this and sharing it for future generations so they see what they missed!

We took these places for granted in the 60's and had many visits to all three mentioned works and also served 30 years at Derby Works during my railway times.These towns were built around railway activity and later on Rolls Royce of course. Along with my work colleague (Steve) towards the last years we were determined to try and record on film and photos as much as possible during our working days at Derby even though decay had set in to an unreversable level!

Over a century to build and develop. So many memories. So few weeks to destroy what the Luftwaffe couldn't touch in two world wars!

*Super cool video. As a little kid, I (vaguely) remember visiting this place during an open day - maybe circa 1978?. Seeing lots of heavy work benches and a miniature ride-along steam locomotive always stick in my minds eye*

I worked in engineering for 17 years, before the yanks bought it out. Filmed my old shop and office through broken windows, as I could not gain access. It was Slumberland

Yes Ian correct, it was not the original entrance as the canal used to flow through there, but a lot of the later employees never experienced the narrow bridge entrance and when car use became the norm something had to be done! I used to drive my old commer van through the original entrance and the wireless aerial used to catch the roof! As more lorry deliveries started to replace rail deliveries the newer entrance was barred to those vehicles and the approach was from Deadman's Lane. That was also a pain as a few times some of the lorries had to have their tyres de-flated to get under that bridge which carried the main line or alternatively we used to have to ferry a convoy of fork lift trucks to off load at Deadman's Lane! In the long run the restricted access to the works and the BR policies of the day of individual freight wagon movements, helped to bring it's demise (Way before Pride Park access was created) Ken

Great film of the closed works and the music was alright I thought, despite some of the comments ( music/sound of the time). I was in a lot of these shops as an apprentice, it was a good place to work and there were some great people and characters at the loco works. It's hard to believe that a works that size and important is not there anymore, the roundhouse, offices and part of the maintenance buildings being the exception and only surviving part of the works.

Thanks for watching and appreciating the incidental music! The Loco Works was like being a part of a massive family to a great many of the employees there, with its good and bad sides! Now its all gone I think we appreciate that more so. When I was transfered to Carriage Works along with many other redundant Loco Works staff the atmosphere was totally different and many of us never really felt apart of it like we did at Siddals Rd works!! I still look at my numerous photos regular that I took and so glad I recorded those moments there.

At the beginning of the video is says Derby Loco, the old entrance which it is not. this entrance used the old Derby Canal basin and turned out into a new car park entrance the other side. The main entrance was a little further along Siddals Road and was so narrow as more workmen in the late 60's (i for one) used our cars to go to work, Derby bought the basin and used that as an entrance leaving the other one for foot and bike traffic.

Agreed its a problem all the Western nations have unfortunately. We get fleeced to upgrade and 3rd worlders become successful instead. Sold out by business and government
@PreservationEnthusiast
@PreservationEnthusiast 2 жыл бұрын
Not really. We get our locos much cheaper. The workers here priced themselves out of the global market with strikes, industrial action, or work to rule protests.
@PreservationEnthusiast

@@soulman3590 Totally true. Also lazy British workers and funeral productivity rates made buying overseas a much better proposition. Things there are made in modern state of the art factories not places like that shown in the video which are only fit for demolition.

@@steamgent4592 In the UK the workers shot themselves in the foot with strikes, industrial action, work to rule, and poor productivity. The 1970s to 1990s were the years of strikes. The 1990s and 2000s were the years of demolition. Direct cause and effect.

I remember that hell-hole, I was stuck in there through the long hot summer of 1976, welding bloody journal ends. The whole place had an air of antiquity and decay, like the body of some huge leviathan close to death.

Ah! The music was not a choice simply an experiment and ad libbed in real time against the scenerio and the feelings of the video the volume mix was too high it should have been really low in the mix but old technology at the time!

The employees used to call the open day the Derby Loco Flower Show, as I recall. The workers used to grow either dahlias or Chrysanthemums and put them on display. A shame that we've destroyed so much, in the name of progress and now import virtually everything (mainly from China!)
@daysken
@daysken 2 жыл бұрын
Yes the Flower Show was a noted date on the Derby Calendar especially for trainspotters! Usually the last Sat in August, then the week after C & W used to have their show. Good memories of a proud time for Derby

Mrs Richards: "I paid for a room with a view !" Basil: (pointing to the lovely view) "That is Torquay, Madam." Mrs Richards: "It's not good enough!" Basil: "May I ask what you were expecting to see out of a Torquay hotel bedroom window? Sydney Opera House, perhaps? the Hanging Gardens of Babylon? Herds of wildebeest sweeping majestically past?..." Mrs Richards: "Don't be silly! I expect to be able to see the sea!" Basil: "You can see the sea, it's over there between the land and the sky." Mrs Richards: "I'm not satisfied. But I shall stay. But I expect a reduction." Basil: "Why?! Because Krakatoa's not erupting at the moment?

Tend to agree with you on a technical note, however the video was made by a person who was passionate about the Loco Works and purchased a cam corder in the early 80's to make sure he captured some important record of the destruction of a fine Workshop establishment for future reference. This is a rare video and appreciated by many people who remember these workshops!
