With the new strategic force levels of Nato we need to go from BTN-level battle groups to BDE-level battlegroups. The Leopard 1 has the advantage over Leopard 2, that it can move on a highway system - that was how it was specifically designed to operate in West Germany. Danish Leopard 1 can move by sea with ferries - and then move ALONG the rivers and avoid bridges. This means the reinforcement time is cut from a week to two days. Is the Leopard 1 an ideal solution? No, but it is probably "good enough" - especially considering the likely opposition. Another factor is that the Danish training facilities are probably sufficient to training up to section level - above that we have allways had to rely on german facilities. Now a whole new set of training opportunities open in the Baltic states. It will cost a fair amount of money; but it will be incredibly cheaper than upgrading existing facilities.
