Hey Anna! I have enjoyed watching your videos for a few years now as I’m in my last year of grad school! I’ve always been interested in hospital/healthcare social work since I was in my undergrad so your insight has been comforting to me! I’m now doing my final practicum in a hospital in the city I live in and it’s such a fun time. Keep it up and I hope you’re doing well!!

As always love your videos Anna! Question, do you have resources for MSW grad students??

Hi Anna! You mentioned providing bedside counseling and educational services. Much of your workload seems case-management-based. Regarding counseling and educational services, do you teach patients and their families coping skills, parenting skills, communication skills (i.e., assertiveness training and emotion identification), and psychoeducation? Do you administer inventories (e.g., Beck Depression Inventory, PHQ-9, or the Mental Status Exam) and interpret patient's assessment scores for diagnostic purposes? During the care coordination conferences with patients' parents and primary care providers, do you sometimes create safety plans? My MSW field placement was originally situated in a local pediatric setting. However, my original MSW field placement did not fit me well. I am trying to discern whether the BHIPP program, the particular local practice, or medical Social Work in general was the reason for my MSW field placement reassignment. Best wishes and thank you so much for providing us with a little window into your workday/medical social work!

Hi Lily! My role is a bit hybrid between the two, utilizing social work skills in both. We have case managers who handle the nitty-gritty of discharge (arranging prescriptions, organizing home medical equipment, etc). Social workers handle aspects of hospitalization and discharge planning in regards to social inequities, connecting to social services and resources, and some extra problem solving if a discharge plan is extra complex. I do not administer inventories as there is a Behavioral Mental Health team who works with patients as needed for mental health and safety needs.
