The Bible says you cant serve two masters, money or truth. Coin dealers willing to foster a healrhy collecting environment should sponsor Leo, he is an honest man

I’m glad your speaking out about this. These vault boxes make the hobby much more hostile to newcomers. If your introduction to ancient numismatics is literally just gambling, you’re almost bound to have a bad first impression, and turn away any potential numismatists. Even if you get lucky and get good coins, you’re still given a ridiculously unrealistic image of what numismatics is!
@ClassicalNumismatics19 күн бұрын
Thanks! Indeed, we need numismatics to be as accessible as possible for beginners, and this just generates a predatorial environment.

I’ve been saying “they’re coming for the kids” for about 15 years now, and not just in the gambling sense. It’s crazy how out in the open these things are. Thanks for calling it out!

There really is a disturbing trend of preying on the vulnerable. We need to call that stuff out every time it happens!

This is absolutely atrocious. What a horrible company. As if Vaultbox could get any worse 🙄

If "Vault Box" remains true to style, then some books will have text, while many others will have blank pages. The buyback policy won't cover this product, however.

I never really understood the point of any of these loot box companies when you could just spend the same money on something you actually want. From what I've seen they're basically never a good deal.
@brooksrownd227518 күн бұрын
Somewhere adjacent to vaultbox there's an engaging concept waiting to be discovered. There could be a similar thing for new or "upgrading" collectors which sends you some interesting decent coins, and perhaps a relevant numismatic book, wrapped up in a guide describing the history and condition of the coins, how to appraise them for historical value, explaining why other collectors find them interesting, and possible directions to go from there. Basically, trying to excite the new collector on coins or types they perhaps weren't familiar with before, and focusing on the value of the history and craft, rather than hollow profitable scores. Sometimes new collectors are a bit lost and take a while to find more interesting things to collect than morgan dollars or buffalo nickels.

Disgusting but I’m not surprised with the state of the slabbed coin market where appreciation for art and history takes a backseat to a quick buck.

Even if they sold the coins at cost it would be sus because of the randomness. Build in a 30-40% profit margin and NGC should really be ashamed.

If adults want to gamble, that's fine. Not my business, have your fun. If someone wants to run a legitimate gambling operation where the odds are actually what is advertised, that's okay. Not my business. However, when you market your gambling operation to children, I draw the line. This isn't Pokémon cards, or video games with virtual items. They're coins. They're actual money. All US coins are all legal tender. So it is actually gambling marketed to children. Not even pseudo-gambling like the other loot box type things marketed to kids. They need to have legal action taken against them for this.

Indeed. As much as I dislike the regulatory hell that is Europe, I have to admit something like this would never be allowed here.

Also, has anyone noticed, in the first page of the book, A for Ancients, it says that ancients were made first out of bronze, which isnt true lmao
@stevekovoc393919 күн бұрын
Actually, it's probably saying that for Roman coins, though the wording does make it seem like it's talking about ancient coins in general.

Another smear upon our hobby! If people want to gamble coins, just buy (actual) uncleaned coins, at least there is some fairness to that… even though most of the time it’s still a loss.
