Channel gets better and better. Thanks for another video on what all those ancient coins could actually buy. Makes one glad for all its faults to live in the present day.

Brilliant content as always! I wonder why KZbin doesnt push nice content like this, prefering to just show us brainrot continuously. This video is jam packed with relevant information and is narrated in a storyteller manner, which is easy to follow for both beginners and history buffs alike. Your time to shine will come,Leo. Keep going!

I would bring some worn Aureus from Nero or Vespasian, have a blast at the Games and Circus Maximus, go chill at some imperial baths, and try to end up with 20+ denarii from Claudius, Caligula, Galba and Otho in pocket change. Absolute win-win situation, as these coins will be worth far more than the worn Aureus you started with, once back in our time ;P

ABSOLUTELY would prefer a day at the Circus. Watching the race scene from Ben Hur (1959) is pretty exciting and it only could be better in person! Great video!!

It must have been much easier to get in as well, with a 100.000+ capacity. I need to make a video on the Circus Maximus, now that you mention it.

A great idea for a video! Creates a clear sense of context for what happens to the money.
@ClassicalNumismatics13 күн бұрын
Thanks Stephen! I enjoy contextualizing coins in the situations they were used :) Thats what makes the small change so interesting. Yeah, it isnt as pretty as the gold stuff, but it is so relatable

I always wondered about this. Thank you for the video. It was very interesting. I kinda like the idea of what was a lot of money to them, would only cost me $20 in silver if I bought it now and brought it back in time. Now only if I had a time machine

I would bring back another couple denarii just to get change and bring back all those sweet sweet sestertii which featured the Colosseum and try to complete a 12 Caesar's set of sestertii.

A great video, thank you. A great coin of Vespasian at the start. I have been to the Colosseum, Rome is a great city. I also own a few Ancient oil lamps, one of them is a later Roman lamp that has a picture of the 3 Hebrews on the discuss from the book of Daniel. Great coins shown, for sure Domitian understood inflation and it is a quandary how much things cost in Roman times and how much they would cost today.
@ClassicalNumismatics12 күн бұрын
Domitian really deserves credit for being one of the very few leaders in history to actually INCREASE the amount of silver on his coins, rather than debase it. Vespasian was quite fond of "ancient quantitative easing" and Domitian tried hard to revert his father's inflationary policies.

Surprisingly, the amount of value in silver romans earned was still bigger than in some very poor modern countries. Even without accounting for the fact that silver in ancient world was much more valuable.
@ClassicalNumismatics11 күн бұрын
That is correct. Once we look at these facts we are reminded how valuable precious metals still are
@benfranklin915612 күн бұрын
Looks like a 90% silver equivalent in older US coins would be about 2 quarters and a dime. Back in say 1890’s 60 cents could get you a day at the ballpark. But not a fun time…..
