Dude this is beautiful. I was immediately brought back to my childhood of noclipping through the entirety of Half Life 2, learning all these input commands, playing Portal, being part of clans back when people cared about that stuff in CS: Source and DoD. I also remember playing a LOT of Sven Co Op. When Gmod came out, bro that was literally the first game I've recorded having over 1000 hours in - I loved it! You mentioning the RP stuff was also bitter sweet, especially knowing that 10 years from now we'll be seeing videos just like yours, but about GTA 5 RPing. Good times.

Garry's Mod in particular, as a programmer, is so nice. You have a good, thin Lua API over a lot of Source SDK functionality For all games, though, Source's console and config system, while imperfect, is powerful enough to make client configuration interesting even for Source multiplayer titles.

Can definitely agree with this. Gmod's allowed to me make so much cool stuff that would've taken ages if I had to start from the ground up. For example, I do development on that Clockwork roleplay framework he talks about, and it alone gives me the ability to build some really cool stuff off of it and make a wider spread of features than if I had to start fresh. I've made a full on botany sytem, energy management, specialized crafting devices and crafting research, sample analysis, ore surveying, collecting, and refining, and a ton more stuff in less than a month's time because of the tools available, all of which is being employed on a sci-fi exploration roleplay server. Great stuff Gmod is!

I'm glad you brought up Garry's Mod roleplay. It's near and dear to my heart and was an absolutely massive part of my life for the longest part. Sadly, as you said, the community is nearly gone nowadays. But back in its heyday it was a goldmine of experiences. And I do not mean the lite side of RP, or DarkRP which is so in name only. I mean the serious roleplay. I've wandered the irradiated wastes of Fallout. I have been the subject of an FEV test. I have been crippled by super mutants and had robotic limbs grafted on, betrayed by a boyfriend gone insane from radiation and mutations, had my bar mortared by raiders, been forcibly recruited into the Brotherhood. I've run away as a prospective rebel in Half-Life, only to be spared and then recruited into the Civil Protection and then ascend through the ranks to become a squad leader and then an assassin. I've been forced to chance down friends and execute them for being anti-citizens. I have been a lost, lonely girl with a cursed past, taught and neglected by a benevolent necromancer and then taken in by a far more malicious witch. I've been inculcated into the dark arts and later became a lich. I have been a kindly gnoll shaman confronted by an overzealous hunter but rescued by friends, and later saved those friends with a well-placed lightning strike that brought down a cave's ceiling on top of a skeletal giant. I have been a spare pirate, a Brotherhood Paladin, a lone ranger trying to safeguard a small town. I've been a food vendor in neon-soaked streets of a cyberpunk future and been a confused cyborg in a space western. I've been a quarian on colonies and a ship, as well as a turian C-Sec agent on the Citadel. I've crawled through maintenance shafts in the underground tunnels of Metro and fought against the Red Line, helped in infirmaries and served warm, freshly made soup to the hungry. I've wandered through anomalies and lethal gunfights in the Zone as a stalker, made friendships with and offered solace to people. So many memories I've made over the years. I hope that one day there'll be a game and a community as rich as Garry's Mod roleplay scene once was.

I only just got into gmod recently and i've still had one of the best gaming experiences with it ever, despite the tiny playerbase in my country and the massive mod dumping on servers making multiplayer virtually unusable. You can still have fun with old games whether their time is 'up' or not

I'll never forget how I used to play on public flatgrass servers so many years ago as a 13 year old, and I had a design for a plane that I used to fly using nothing but flat metal props and thrusters, and I'd operate it with the numberpad on the keyboard. It flew a lot like a fixed wing aircraft, I could do loops and barrel rolls and everything, and I'd weld the airboat seat to to it, as a well as a camera to the back so I could fly it in third-person. I would go on flatgrass servers and build it and fly it around, and if anyone ever wanted to ride on it I'd let them get in the seat and I'd turn on the camera and just fly around the map so they could look around and see the map from the air. I remember this kid asking for a ride one time and I did all these tricks and rolls, and when I landed and he got off he just said through the mic "that was SO AWESOME" and I was so happy that my creation got that reaction out of someone. Truly happy memories.

I honestly can't imagine life without the Source engine, Garry's Mod, Half-Life 2, and Counter Strike could just be on any other game engine but it just wouldn't be the same. There's nothing like the engines physics simulations, decent lighting, and easy to use command console that just works so well with their games, even the hot new online shooter Apex Legends runs on the old girl. Source just might be the best game engine ever made when it comes to it's fame and giving players several great memories.

The source engine is by far the one thing i grew through my teen years with and I can promise you i’ll be playing old source games when i’m 30 and when i’m 80 years old. There’s just something so beautiful about it even though it’s not the most good-looking and sometimes it doesn’t run very well even on high-end PC’s. It’s just home to me and my dreams take place in Source engine all the time it’s such a big part of my life. As you can see by my profile picture I love Half-Life 2, I play GMOD and the HL series all the time.

Source is a lovey chapter in my creative life. I still haven’t found anything quite as creatively satisfying as mapping for TF2 and having people play my maps. The cycle of creative imagination, steeled implementation, and community input was addicting. I wish other engines and games were quite as open to mapping as source is.

One of the small, sad things I had in my life was not experiencing all of these when I was younger. I was so invested in Gmod culture way back with no means of playing the actual game. This video made me realize that maybe I did not tried enough as a young boy to get what he really wanted. I grew up on those Idiots of Garry's Mods video series and almost all of those pioneers that coexisted on this website. I love that I still had fond memories with key source games especially Left 4 Dead 2 where it was prevalent in LAN cafes in my country, playing with my friends during that time countless hours where our money had enabled us. I would be ecstatic if I had a way to play Gmod back then but it's sad that we are indeed on the tailend of that generation of source games. Technically, Dota 2 is a source game, but it did not had the charm and legacy of say, Team Fortress 2 before it became free-to-play and of course, Garrys Mod. I'd love to go back in time and experience these in its glory, but it is what it is. They'll be relics that will be remembered and you done fulfilled your part in expressing how much these games were loved.

One thing about the licensing of source engine. That license where you get the engine almost for free is relatively recent. Back in its hayday valve was very strict about licensing their engine and unfortunately a lot of ambitious projects that wanted to go commercial didn't success in securing a source license

I remember first getting Gmod three months before the release of Fallout 4, to waste some time until it launched. Ever since it's become my most played game, with 2369 hours logged in, I'd say only 50 of those hours were spent in servers, as with all servers I joined the playerbase always either seemed incredibly hostile towards me, or the admins were childish. I will never forget a time in a darkrp server, making a 1 man stand against a rival gang repeatedly breaking rdm and nlr rules as they were friends with the owner, and the police players, or in another being in a police chase, sitting on the back of the car and firing at the police before crashing at a mcdonalds and having a shootout there. While I will never once touch Gmod servers again, I will never forget the times I had in them

Gmod gave me some amazing highs and lows with the many different friend groups I've made over the years. Went from a Zombie Outbreak server that's still going since 2007 to several different jailbreak servers, a murder community that died out of nowhere then to two of Australia's most popular Prophunt servers with Monumental Gaming and Vulcan Network It's crazy to think of how quickly a Gmod community could just disappear back in the old days, I wouldn't trade any of my current friends in my current Gmod community for anyone else

Bought GMOD back in 2013 after years of pirating it. Until late 2018, i never get any good device to play it, and i missed the time when having fun with group of friends playing Amogus with guns and Prophunt, and the day when i got invited to a sandbox server and crashes my laptop so hard it can't play Gmod again was so much fun. I got a passable laptop that can play the game consistently, but at that point everyone i used to play with get to move on to other games that this device can't play, or vanished entirely. The GMOD construct is basically a ghost town with only i had the gall to pay a visit now. And let's not forget when the golden era of Garry's Mod ended, the day when we never expected it, the year when we hoped the future of Gmod and Source Engine to thrive and shine bright. January 24, 2015, the day when the legend died, the day when the trailblazer fades away, the day when the fireworks trail's ends, and so does the passion that drives the community onward. What follows was the start of dark age for Source Engine and all of it's related games and their community; stagnant of updates from games with slowly dwindling playerbase, the heavily prioritized DOTA 2 starts taking over other devs from other project to essentially run it (to a lesser extent, CS:GO) leaving other games effectively abandoned with only few devs that can be counted with your fingers remaining, other big creators leaving the scene for good or switch to another subject, and other games and genre providing more than what Source could. I would say that Gmod interest has slowly dwindled after the death of Colin Wyckoff, the guy who managed to run something with it and etched a wonderful memory to millions. He may not be the guy who kickstarted it, but his creations inspired other players to do the same and he's been very supportive to anyone whom he cooperates in their project. It's been a while now since his passing, and the community slowly resurging. The fact that it's more likely that Valve will make another single player game than having a major update for Team Fortress 2 is a mixed feeling for me but it's still something i would like to. Rest in peace, my man. The heavens welcome have opened their arms for you. If you can listen to us from there, would you say something in return?

Thank you for making this. Very nostalgic and honestly inspirational to get back into and finally finish my gmod gamemode. I have over 20'000 hours in gmod from running tons of servers and making hundreds of gameplay systems and I've been working on this last gamemode for what feels like forever. I have some small videos of it on my channel, but I'm honestly really bad at showcasing it. My honest to god hope is that people don't just remember gmod not for the annoying admin situations or the loud squeekers or even the cash cow dime-a-dozen DarkRP servers, but also the place where people could really make their dreams come true in a time where video games were still in their early stages of mass adoption when the creation of sophisticated games was finally being understood by people growing up with them. I appreciate that you want to convey that with this video in your own way so again, Thank you.

From all of the internet communities I know, the source community might just be the best. Also source engine is the best engine of all time. I don't remember any other games LETTING me create my own maps with a professional tool that the devs also used to make the in game maps, or peek inside map files to see how the devs made stuff happen. Also even the games themselves are so open just letting you open the console and type in powerful cheats. Killing bots in buddha mode in tf2, or killing scientists in hl gave me the biggest feeling of power as a kid

Source was part of what sparked my interest in game design back in the day, in conjunction with the art direction in games like Homeworld and developer behind-the-scenes content from the Halo franchise when I was in high school. Then I got out of high school, went to an art school with a focus on game design, and that, combined with more personal stories from within the industry, made me hate it so much I quit that path and enlisted.
