Watching the tuning procedure is meditative and fascinating. In some Asian cultures dating back to the Medieval period, tuning was aesthetized, ritualized, and integrated into the actual performance (in the music of China's Tang Dynasty, for example, as "tuning-testing" preludes).

I always love your playing, and this is a beautiful video. Could you add the dates for each of the five composers listed above, so it's clear when they lived (or if they are still living)?
@liambyrnevdg3 жыл бұрын
Thanks so much! I'll update the dates. The anonymous fantasy is from the Merro partbooks, which date roughly around 1625 I think. The last piece is from a Manuscript from the 1670's

Wonderfully strange harmonies. What is the tuning and the source of this music? Daniel Farrant.? I like the deep richness of the tones and the practicality that it doesn’t move to crazy positions on the viol. You play it wonderfully.

Fabulous Liam. I also hugely enjoyed hearing your two performances at LIFEM. Lovely instrument, is that walnut on the ribs? Who was the maker? Jonathan Hill?
@liambyrnevdg3 жыл бұрын
Thank you! The back is walnut but the ribs are actually plum, and the instrument is by Marc Soubeyran

Could I ask, which brand of strings you use for the unwound basses? It sounds so good!
@dbadagna3 жыл бұрын
The brand and maker of the strings are mentioned in the video description above.
