I am head over heels for this instrument. That sound is incredible.

Great project! I get the feeling that it would sound even better with a much bigger sound hole. The sound without the pickup sounds muted and I reckon it would be more open with a bigger hole.

I found this video as part of my research for building a junk/trash parts sympathetic violin. I'm inspired by Hindustani violin music. I'm not a musician but i absolutely have to try to build the thing and see what I can do with it.

It certainly sounds great and that’s the important part! I’m curious about the tied frets… I know they’re common enough on a variety of instruments but since I’m here I want to ask… it’s not possible to do guitar-style vibrato with them, correct? And does the material on the back of the neck inhibit sliding? I suppose with practice you develop a playing style that works with them but it seems like they would be frustrating for a guitar player who is used to frets that don’t have these kinds of issues. Thanks!

nice one! I did not expect it to sound as good as it did. We've been trying to figure out how to get a violoncello da spalla with sympathetic strings made... (a cello d' amore? a hardanger cello da spalla?) An octave hardanger d' amore? Anyway not sure how we're going to make that happen... but dreaming. This is surprisingly nice sounding for a plywood box! Kind of incredible.

This is amazing! I want to make one myself, but I know nothing about the original instrument this is emulating. How is everything tuned, is there something going through the box to give the neck more strength, or is it strong enough just bolted onto the box? What kind of guitar strings do you use for something like this? Etc etc.. I hope you see this and can answer some of the questions, because I think I could make a pretty descent version of this with the cnc machines and laser cutters I have access to.

You know, if you can do the neck and action, you should be able to do the rest. That's the most intimidating part of an instrument to me, getting the action and neck. The body? Fun, like a game, playing with the design and thickness. Neck? Just gotta be right.

Nifty, Liam! Yes, the strings and the bridge are critical to the sound even when it is to be played electronically -- but so is the player!!!

Most interesting. I always knew you were a great musician but didn't realise you had such DIY skills. I suggest you head down the road and help your old lad who is fixing up his house and is a bit limited in his craftsmanship.

it's interesting... but even with the acoustic pickup module it sounds tinny. You'd have far greater and better results if you used some decent woods instead of plywood. Plywood has crappy acoustic properties because of the haphazard layering that plywood is comprised of. If you want a really nice sounding instrument then only solid woods will do. They don't have to be high quality or figured maple hardwoods or spruce... Spruce would be great. But even western red cedar has superior acoustic, resonant properties than plywood. Plywood just does NOT resonate well. You can buy decent and clear grained western red cedar at any hardware store that sells lumber. The same goes for maple. Thin slice maples for the sides of your instrument box would add more life and would deepen the bass and acoustic resonance. A single slice of spruce offset to the left or right would make a great bass-bar common in most violin type instruments. You can still make a box cello with "sympathetic strings. You would get far better results if you reduced the strings to 4 top strings and 4 sympathetic strings. The result would be more harmonious and easier tuning. Nice video... fascinating concept. Try making another with good tonal quality woods like those I suggested. Nice video, thank you for sharing.

plywood works fine if it's not this CDX hardware store stuff, although at the point where you get BB or better you're better off just getting some solid wood lol
