[RAZER BLADE PRO 17 2020 HANDS-ON / FIRST LOOK]
“Desktop replacement” laptops aren’t great for a life lived on the go. But in case you hadn’t noticed … we’re not doing a lot of “going” these days! In fact the furthest I’ve taken my computer for most of 2020 so far has been from one room of my apartment to the other, with maybe the occasional field trip up to the roof. For this kind of situation, where you’re never gonna be too far from a power outlet or a tabletop, but still want as much power and display real estate as possible, the desktop replacement laptop is ideal -- and the Razer Blade Pro 17 (2020) is one of the most capable you can buy. It also happens to be the very first Razer Blade I’ve ever used - so join me for my first thoughts after two days!

@@TheMrMobile They can only have the battery so big before they run out of room for cooling the laptop. That's why for gaming it's better to have a desktop. Got mine to replace my old Razer blade 14 from 2015 and I can say It it quit perfect for me - Beautiful 144hz screen - Simple prenium design - Good audio powered by Dolby - Good battery life to work outside ( ~5h ) - Powerful enough to run all my games at 120fps minimum - The temperature is about ~75 when I’m playing, it’s good compared to my old Razer with ~85 I think if you are looking for something powerful with a good battery life and portability, this is the right choice, it is worth the price.

I actually just made the same switch. My previous laptop was a 2012 MBP Retina and i just got a Razer blade 15 base 2019. One of the biggest drawbacks of the Blade is that it does get very hot and the fans spin A Lot! The biggest gains are obviously the performance in productivity applications and games. I did have to go through much effort to cool the system down with changing the thermal paste and undervolting through Throttlestop. I have been able to significantly expand the battery life (to 4.5-7 hrs) and have the laptop typically running at 47-52C instead of 52-57C when I first got this thing.

It actually lasts 4.7 hours with normal usage whereas in the same test, the MBP 16" lasts 11 hours. BUT, when gamging, the Razer lasts 1.4 hours and the MBP 16" lasts 1 hour. So, under heavy load, the Razer outlasts the MBP 16" by a little but with regular use, the MBP 16" outlasts the razer by over 2 times. Source: notebookcheck.net

Lol Michael! You never play hardcore games on a gaming laptop on your lap! It will get warm. Especially if it was sitting on some kind of fabric or carpet that can actually block the bottom cooling vents. It's best to be put on a solid object like a desk or a table. And if you can put something underneath it on the back side to slightly raise it it would help even more. Trust me 😁

The desktop replacement or desktop debate is a genuine one and shouldn't just be dismissed on either side. I've used my Y50 for 4 years as a desktop replacement and for university paired with a screen, and it's unreplaceable for that! But I've switched to a desktop which I plan on SFFing and will probably stay that way, since I can get one to last a lot longer and for a lot less. Barely any real users change tech out so much! Plus there's always the option to remote into it with an ultrabook around the house.

My girlfriend bought the 15 a little over a year and a half ago, been using it constantly and done everything from drawing/photo editing in photoshop to rendering 3D scenes in Maya with Vray with some After Effects work in-between and the only sign of age is a very slight but noticeable coil whine when the fans blow at full speed. Hasn't reached the point where we'd call on support about it, yet. Outstanding machine besides that one flaw.

"Twitch" will take use of my hot keys and have a purple color scheme, "Basic" is just all white for minimal distraction when working, and "COD" will have certain keys mapped by color just in case I forget a key swap I did previously. I have the Razer Blade 15 from 2018. I’ve recently bought a MacBook Pro 16 to replace it. My blade 15 failed in a multitude of ways. Microphone stopped working, webcam stopped working, many many blue screens, I had my first plastic hinge protector inside the laptop crumble into four peace’s and a replacement I bought and fitted myself also crumpled weeks after I replaced it. The razer logo stopped lighting up and I’ve had graphic abnormalities on the screen. I feel like I need to mention I do have extremely bad luck with technology despite how much I love and take care of any product. To give razer their dues, the did help me out and resolved almost all of the problems however, because of all of the issues I needed to send the device away for repair four weeks before a flight to film a documentary abroad the laptop did not get delivered in time and I was left without my work laptop. Once I got the laptop back I spent a day reinstalling and updating everything then the following day the fan that cools the GPU started violently vibrating and grinding the whole laptop and I had to shut it down and restart multiple times before the issue would go away only to come back the next time after I shut it down and didn’t use it for a few hours. For anyone still reading this I apologise wholeheartedly if this appears like a rant! Although the laptop failed me and I cannot recommend them to anyone it did ultimately serve me well despite it’s problems, at the end if the day it’s a tool for gaming and creativity (I mostly used it for editing and Minecraft every now and then)

My first and last Razr laptop GPU died 1 month after warranty ran out. It still worked off the intel chip. Used it a few more years with an External 1070 GPU for gaming and Adobe.

You can do game specific profiles! If you make a profile, you can use the app to link it to a game or app and it will automatically switch to that profile when you start. I use it for protools and some indie games, I think it's a highly underrated feature :)

I have a razer blade 2019 and I have to say I love it! I hate the weird shift key on the 2019 models but it's so light and looks so cool. I love it. even my dad who is 60 years old and knows nothing about computers complimented it >.< . It's a big investment in my opinion but I work in IT and spend hours per day in a computer so I justified my purchase with "it's for school and work"

Desktop replacement laptops can be avoided if you have a good home internet. I have a decent gaming rig at home with Parsec installed and use my HP Spectre to connect to it from anywhere and play my games at 120hz. More people need to try out Parsec. It's the best kept secret in tech and it'll blow your mind how amazing it is. And no I'm not an employee, just a tech nerd who loves trying and sharing info on cool products.

You have to update the speaker drivers, not sure why they're not factory prepared. The sound will be twice as good once you do so.

I've got a Blade 15 Advanced (2018). First unit had a failing mic, followed by a failing webcam. I went through the support channels, and while it took a while all-in, I got an essentially brand new replacement unit shipped back to me. Common problems you'll hear about is coil whine in their power bricks - and that their laptops are simply over-speced for the amount of cooling they are capable of. This is similar to Apple, as both companies sacrifice a little function for form. I undervolt my CPU/GPU to balance the scales.

I'm gonna throw my Razer experience into the ring here. I picked up a 2018 Blade 15 Advanced off Ebay last year, and despite the many, many issues the thing has had since then I still like it a lot. When I was first setting it up and installing updates, somehow both the built-in webcam and microphone broke such that they don't even show up in Device Manager anymore. The cooling on this machine is pretty bad, especially when "gaming mode" is activated. I was thermal throttling on even lighter games at low settings until I opened the thing up to clean and repaste it. And the Synapse software, while really fun and useful for Chroma and performance options, crashes over half the time I try to use it. I did quite a bit of digging on all these issues, and none of them seem that rare, but everyone who talked about it in the Razer subreddit or forums were immediately moved to private messages with Razer support instead of publishing any details. And predictably, when I contacted Razer support to get some information they refused to talk to me because I got my Blade second-hand. All that being said! The light-to-medium gaming, streaming, and audio production work I do with my Blade work perfectly well, and I still can't get enough of the 144hz display and tiny bezels. I doubt my next computer will be a Razer, but I'm keeping this one around as long as I can.

Also, if you look at _every_ laptop's speaker grills, MacBook included, the actual holes only take up a very small part of the grill, so there's no way of knowing the actual speaker size without taking a peek inside.

With a Windows laptop you buy and choose a laptop according to what you want to use it for. With a mac , you buy the mac , you do whatever mac allows you to do with it. If you choose to own an Apple , Apple chooses what you're able to do with it. In the windows laptop world you can do anything YOU want. You just need to pick the right one. That's why mac users don't like windows laptops. They aren't accustomed to making their own choices other than how much storage or memory you want.

Anyone that is seriously gaming do that without plugging the PC on the wall, or with it on the lap... I don’t know why tech youtubers do that. What’s the point? The Blade is a gaming laptop... so, it’s made with people that actually can afford/appreciate high end top notch spces for that it’s no shame at all to not have a num pad on it, and even if it didn’t have a SD card slot, wouldn’t matter a lot for gamers there are notebooks dedicated to creative people, and in those cases, it’s a shame to no have a SD slot, or num pad (maybe), and stuff related to productivity or video editing oriented stuff... as a product made for GAMING first, the Blade Pro is maybe the leader in it’s specs/design.

2 hours on a battery at max performance in 2020 is the same as basically any laptop 10 or more years ago. The big change is coming with the new Ryzen CPUs probably, the power benchmarks look promising with 4-5+ hours on max performance.
