I absolutely LOVE the enthusiasm and cultural appreciation our American and Canadian friends display whenever they visit the UK in general, and England in particular. Their 'reactions' over the years have certainly enhanced MY appreciation for having been born in these magical islands! If only more of THEM would come and settle here, as opposed to certain others I could mention, with _their_ sense of entitlement, cultural hostility, and indifference.

I have not watched many of your videos but I do intend, when time allows, to go right back and watch them especially pre the trip as you planned it etc. Of course, London is a special place and being a Brit (Welsh is you recall an earlier comment) I have been there many times. But the first time is always special and I still have some memories of that. More years ago than I care to admit to but some memories never fade.

Another great video - your editing and use of music in this one is excellent! I know Brian loves his fantasy culture, so if you aren’t already aware, I can recommend Ben Aaronovitch’s ‘Rivers of London’ series of novels which begin in Covent Garden and feature many of the locations you visited!

I think what’s most interesting about the old squares of London are the influential figures who commissioned them and those who lived in the houses around the perimeter. Look out for the blue plaques!

The problem with that zebra crossing at Abbey Road is that by law, pedestrians have priority as soon as they set foot on the crossing, so cars are obliged to stop. We're also taught to be prepared to stop if it looks as though someone might be about to cross, even if they actually don't, and just carry on walking past. Or in the case of Abbey Road, just stand there planning how to get the best shot! I don’t think I've ever driven past there, but I imagine it must be a nightmare for drivers!

Abbey Road is just Abbey Road. In British culture, one of the most beloved songs is the Kinks "Waterloo Sunset". Get yourself to the south side of Westminster or Waterloo Bridges and walk north on either of them as the sun sets. Westminster bridge goes from Waterloo station across to the Houses of Parliament, Waterloo Bridge its slightly east and runs from Waterloo to Vitoria Embankment. - it has a wonderful view if you walk up the east side, looking down to the city and St Pauls

My wife used to live in Abbey House, which is the apartment block right opposite crossing. Each time we left the building we used to guess how many tourists were outside. Fun at first, but the numbers seem to have grown substantially from 15 years ago - I’m guessing that it is something to do TikTok and instagram etc. quite annoying now.

The Squares and and great deal of London’s modern layout is due to the redesign after the Great Fire Of London in 1666,Sir Christopher Wren,Robert Hook 3 other great architects whose names escape me drew up the bones of modern London. Th3 fire burned for 5 days gutting the medieval character,destroyed a third of the city and left over 100,000 homeless..

@qlctravels
@qlctravels 2 ай бұрын
Yes, but we didn't expect this many people to watch our videos, and we certainly didn't think the majority of our audience would be from Europe (as is the case). The intent was partly to document the trip for us/our friends and family, and partly to show others that if WE can do a trip like this, anyone can. We wanted to just be a couple exploring the world for the first time and showing us figuring it all out, rather than being one of those travel channels that either seems overproduced, or seems like they're trying to sell you something.

Looks like you're doing well covering large parts of central London...just need to cover all 618 square miles of Greater London now!! ;) Good decision to visit sky garden instead of the costly observation deck on the 72nd floor of the shard opposite Sky Garden. Seriously if you get chance to travel a little further than Hampstead Heath and Parliament Hill on a clear day is worth the short train or bus ride. It's where many of the rich and famous choose to live!

Hi You Two! Tower Bridge is probably more interesting than you think. In UK terms it is not as old as it looks, and what you see on the outside is a decorative shell covering the real engineering beneath. YT has a video called The Real Story Behind London's Tower Bridge which might be a good place to look for more information. Keep Reacting!

what's crazy is that you talk about London being small but in actuality you only saw 5-10% of the city! To me, there are easily 3 other prettier/more striking bridges.. but they are in zone 2-7 of London. No chance that the average tourist ever gets a chance to visit them!

Indeed! It's still surreal to have a different context for those locations. We went our whole lives viewing them one way, and now we can't see them without thinking about standing in those spots, or exploring the areas surrounding them.

Very Interesting video, but a suggestion, the audio could be so much better with wireless lapel mics including wind muffs, there is intrusive ambient sound louder than you which is distracting, with lapel mics you can turn your head without the audio dropping.

To enjoy britain best the average american should go into training and get your steps up. Bring worn in walking shoes or boots. Most americans are not used to walking the miles we take for granted. By the way in the 17th 18th century Covent Garden and Haymarket areas had a salacious reputation for its brothels. Haymarket ware or Covent Garden ware were euphemisms for ladies of low repute.

additionally if you want to read a good book about a school for wizards read Ursula Le Guin's Wizard of Earthsea, much much better than Harry Potter and was published long before she stole the idea
@RegBarlow

I think you’re being a bit harsh there. I’ve read both The Earthsea Quartet and the Harry Potter series, and both have their merits. IMHO they are really aimed at different age groups with le Guin’s novels for older person and probably requires more experience of life to understand the themes. Whereas the Potter series is a thumping good adventure that excites the young mind. Both sets can stand up to being read again later and you’ll get something different from them. The one thing The Earthsea Quartet has done though, is to get millions of children actually reading a book and excited about the next volume.
