That falcon is actually called a kestral, and they're the only bird of prey capable of hovering. They can also see in the near ultra violet light which means that they can see urine tracks of mice and voles, and they are able to keep themselves focused on their prey without moving it's head much :D just thought I'd share this (Also they are classed as part of the falcon family so it's not totally incorrect)

Off the coast of Perth I saw a water funnel. It was very narrow and very stable, a cylinder of water, just chilling out from the bottom of the cloud to the surface of the sea. It stayed in the one spot, swayed only a little, and when I squinted I saw it was rotating. Took me a moment to figure out what the hell it was. Nature is full of interesting surprises.

The “Falcon” is a kestrel, which is in the same family, but unlike falcons, Kestrels are the largest species of Bird that is able to hover, hence the video is just a very impressive shot of a kestrel displaying it’s natural behavior.

You can even witness this in humans. Ask your friend to look at the tip of a pen and then ask them to look at the pen while moving their head around, and you'll find that their eyes stay focused on the pen while their entire head, or even body is moving. It's actually a common medical test called the vestibulo-ocular reflex. It's meant to compensate for blurry vision. You can test for yourself, but moving your eyes actually causes a less detailed image than if your entire head was rapidly moving but your eyes stayed focused on the object. In this way, the eagle can't really move its eyes, so it relies on its head to be its gyroscope. It is weirder seeing how an animal evolved the same features us humans have, but using it in such a different way.

Thats how gliders (small planes without engines with large wings) gain altitude as well, the pilots look for thermal columns or any rising hot air (like the wind hitting the side of the cliff in the video) and the way a glider flies is basically slowly loosing altitude in order to produce lift (the force acting on the plane to push it up, keep it afloat) and generate speed. Most gliders have a cruising speed of around 100km/h, thats when the drag coefficient is at its lowest value (ofc in flight) and the lift coefficient is at its highest (it is calculated by measuring the altitude of an aircraft and the distance it travels on the ground until it lands or reaches the ground)
