I really appreciated that my manager at Panera Bread always gave away our entire bakery section to a local homeless shelter at the end of each day. They’d come with a big box, and he’d always greet them with a smile and shake their hand. I don’t know if it’s company policy now, but my manager made sure it happened on his own time. Probably still the best boss I’ve ever had, even fifteen years later.

Thank you! I used to work at Panera and its company policy! I get so frustrated at the comments that say "it's a liability" to give away leftovers. It's not! That's a myth perpetrated by the greedy/lazy corporations to deter ppl from giving away or trying to get free food!

@@dreadfairy6963 we are supposed to “donate”. we don’t have a donor so it really does get thrown out. it’s supposed to happen as per the policy as you mentioned. however, management is really bad where i am and we don’t have a good support system from the higher ups. i don’t know why you think i don’t know what we’re supposed to be doing. i’m literally the closing manager almost every single night and it just doesn’t happen. it doesn’t. it gets thrown out in the morning because we don’t have a designated organization or area to donate to. not every panera is run perfectly as you think. we also definitely do not get free cookies. i never did as an associate even at another store. i know what i’m talking about. your panera doesn’t represent the rest of them. i’m glad you’re able to work in such a nice environment but it’s miserable where i am

I worked at a local donut shop for a decade. We had to throw away the unsold donuts each night but kept count of how much was made and how much was tossed per day so we can minimize the waste. We had charity agreements with local churches that would take our leftover donuts as donations to their community programs on certain days. I also gave away donuts to the homeless but didn't feel the need to film myself doing it for the attention.

I suppose you could argue that some people may try to pretend to be homeless to get free doughnuts but some people may not want to risk getting the reputation of "pretending to be homeless so they can take more from the people who've lost everything" plus the employee could probably tell if someone's just trying to take advantage or keep track of the regulars.

I used to work at Chick-fil-A, and they actually had a very similar rule regarding throwing out of any unsold product at end of day. The idea is that if you don't discard it, customers or employees often would then take this food, which results in either increased food costs or decreased revenue. However, what we started doing is bagging and labeling this food and storing it in bins in the freezer that would later be donated as chicken used for soup kitchens or other similar outreach programs. So, there's definitely a solution there if you make it happen

The food wasting is terrible! There is a startup here in Hungary, it's called Munch, and the participating restaurants, bakeries and so on can advertise the food they have to throw away at the end of the day (but has no problems other than it wasn't sold) at a discount. It's great, because it is extra profit for the shop, you get to eat great meals, complete lunchmeals even at like 50-75% off and less food gets wasted 😊

If you saw a stick and picked it up, that is your stick and you have the right to property. Someone can not come up and take your stick from you because it is your property. It is not a natural right to take which gives us the natural right to protect our natural rights. You have the right to protect your stick from those who seek to take it. The reason they have to throw the food out at the end of the day is because someone who eats the free donuts could sue the company saying it got them sick. I worked in restaurants for years and that was the reason that was given to me. No one liked throwing out all the left over food but the policy was introduced after someone did get sued over giving away left over food. So it was really the fault of whoever filled that first lawsuit.
@jamessmith-gf2vk3 жыл бұрын
