During the great meths shortage of one afternoon in blackheath at a mates house in 1976, we tried white spirit. It raised steam pretty quick , the minor 1 was engulfed in flame and heading for five figure speeds and we were laughing so hysterically, we couldn’t blow it out. We did manage to in the end as the room filled with smoke and soot( its a very dirty flame). Not recommended Keith Happy days

The chimney on my almost identical roller (circa 1963) always got a lot of condensate in it, until dad drilled a hole into it near the base to let it dribble out. Filling with boiling water helps a bit with running time (obviously).

When I was a boy I had a Gilbert stationary steam engine that used paraffin as fuel. It came in little round tubs with a lid on it. You could also use them when camping to cook with. The only problem with using paraffin was the soot that accumulated inside the fire box could get thick enough to stop heat transferring to the boil. My dad would also have a tea kettle boiling water on the stove so he would pour a little into the boiler to speed things up a bit. The one thing he never did was drink anything stronger then beer, so we never tried using whiskey as a fuel.

Lagavulin a good choice. I like a nice Speyside malt such as Singleton, Edradour, Dalwinnie but I’m quite partial to a spot of Laphroaig too. It’s just wasted on old Mamods though. They have no appreciation for it.

Amusing factoid: modern methylated spirit doesn't seem to contain methanol - presumably because too many people were dying of methanol poisoning and unpleasant stuff like Bitrex is off-putting enough to stop people drinking it.

Be sure to tune in for the next episode, when Mr. Appleton finds out how good Chateau Latour '59 is in his parts washer. The results may surprise you- but not his probation officer. (A mate of mine made a steam engine at school, and years later we ran it on Aquavit, as we had used all the meths. It wasn't very good).

@nightlightabcd8 ай бұрын
It is indeed a Mamod SR1, but it is not the oldest. The oldest Mamod steam roller, is the SR1 Nut & Bolt, because it was assembled with nuts and bolts, as opposed to rivets, with the water level plug! The new and improved SR1A came next! The same with the Te1 with no reverse and a water level plug, the oldest is the Nut and Bolt, then the riveted Te1's, then the new and improved SR1A and the TE1A, also with the water level plug, and like all the old Mamods, a single oscillating cylinder In general, the TE1's and SR1's were made somewhat in the 60's and the Te1A's and SR1A's, also with the water plugs were made in the 70's! Now days, the newer ones have a water level sight glass, and the newer ones even have the double action single cylinder! Seem to be getting more like the Wilesco.
