It’s insane how good the world building and production design of this movie is, considering it had a budget of less than 10 million USD. The "London" is actually Russia, this movie is primarily shot in Russia, Ireland and Germany.

One of the saddest things is that the troops that committed the massacre were Indian. That was the British policy at the time to use "martial" minorities against the Indian people.

To be fair, this concept came about after the Indian mutiny, where British civilians were massacred by Indian sepoys, this led to a higher recruitment and higher trust on cultures that hadn't mutinied, such as the Sikhs. Of course due to racism this divide was considered racial and often this led to racism.

Take note the British only got India under its control because the various governors of the various Indian states and provinces DISLIKE EACH OTHER. They spent a lot of their time undermining the Mughal Empire (whom they consider as foreign invaders) and each other and increasingly use British and British-trained forces to sicc on their enemies as hired mercs..

I didn't expect you to review this film, what a pleasant surprise! It is really a great film, one of Vicky Kaushal's best performances! As you said, the film manages to show the reality of British colonialism without demonizing the British people, which is pretty rare in movies in general, let alone Bollywood ones. You can also cover Vicky Kaushal's other, newer film "Sam Bahadur" (tl. Sam the Brave), about Field Marshal Sam Manekshaw!

The name Jalianwalabagh is indeed a bit difficult to remember for non-Indians. So the massacre is often referred to as the Amritsar massacre. That’s where the square is.

And then Prince Philip told in an event after visiting Jallianwala Bagh that how Dyer's son who served with him in the navy, told that the numbers are exaggerated. And he said this to a gathering full of politicians and notables in their 1997 visit to India. This pretty much put an end to official royal visits to India. King Charles (then Prince of Wales), who ironically has a close relationship with many erstwhile royal families, politicians and industrialists, still had to visit in a personal capacity without any state invitation. Although in 2013, he was invited to visit Indian Military Academy although it was very subdued.

Hey Johnny! Shrey here. Your longtime fan and subscriber. First of all Thank you for reviewing this movie and shedding light on the "Event". I have visited the site but couldn't build up the courage to enter the hollowed ground. The walls of the ground are still riddled with bullet holes. Attending the speech were men, women children and elderly. None were spared. I am history buff but some events from history are just gut wrenching.

Movie is 95% truth. What they didn't show is he individually corrected the soldiers who were missing the shots and ordered them to shoot at the densest section of the crowd so that more people can get killed in less time and Bullets.

India could only be ruled by the British with all races and religions not killing eachother ... When independence about to be enacted the Muslims broke away and demanded their owj country because they did not want to live under Hindu majority. this was at the 11th hour. so borders were drawn up that created West and East Pakistan and it was granted independence the day BEFORE India.. ( just in case India revoked the deal ) .. the process of independence was mostly peaceful , but not everyone in India/Pakistan were so inclined and old religious difference often resulted in people killed in riots. these old rivalries continue today.

Great Britain ruled Imperial India - which included India, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka. all with no more than about 200 000 British soldiers and civil servants. a country with over 400 million at the time. religious factions murdered eachother whenever riots broke out. by comparison to what was happening in places like China, Russia etc at the same time - it was extremely peaceful and ordered...

@@prasanthalpha and post-independence Indians killed Pakistanis who were trying to genocide Bangladeshis ( early 1970s ) .. causing massively more casualties and suffering. Indian's pride can't get over how the British ruled India for centuries - and turned it from a medieval Moghul empire to a modern state with infrastructure , courts and democracy.

like the soft soap Gandhi movie . they simply never explain the back story - the British are simply portrayed as if they were Nazis in occupied Russia in ww2... nothing could be further from the truth.. India can't get over how Britain ruled them for centuries and did what noone else could - get the different religious and racial factions to live together without massacring eachother ( most of the time ) once the British were set on leaving in 1947 the Muslims broke away from the National congress - and demanded a separate state ; Pakistan - they would not live under majority Hindu rulers. Partition was rushed, but it was not the British who caused it, or caused the killing that occurred during the split.
