Large ships wake can look identical in the right bottom conditions ..like reefs where the ship sailing near top speed since its open ocean and the reef protrudes...but yeah, rogue waves aren't rare.but are hard to capture because they form so quickly usually and are gone just as quickly....this boat size and closeness to the water actually has the opposite effect on the typical images of rogue waves captured from ships high above the water... This size wave will certainly capsize smaller motorboats..sailboats will most often right themselves or lean all the way over on their side and get pushed a few feet by it then right thselves...as long as all the hatches are secured the sailboat can usually be fine...powerboats don't though and once over your done for

Lol I remember about 25 years ago when I was working on a big supply boat in the Gulf of Mexico, a random rogue wave hit and washed over the stern, knocking me down and into the H bit. I wasn't hurt but I was extremely angry because my shift had just started and I was already soaking wet. So I went inside, changed clothes, got back outside, and another rogue wave hit knocking me down and sending me flying across the deck. I was soaked again and so much more angry that I ripped my hard hat off and threw it at the deck only to watch it bounce and fly overboard.

No it isn't, they are predicted. Your wave buoy reads an average wave height, and you can plan on around a third of them being a little bigger, and a third being a little smaller, so your wave buoy as you see it on the NWS sites are the average third. About once every 1000 waves there will be one that is twice the heigh of the average mean wave height. It can't be rogue if it is predicted. If you are fishing on the 60-90ft mark, where a lot of the near hsore crabbers set their gear you're gonna see your share of them.

Few tips for countering rogue waves: Bigger vessels with slower speeds: Take the wave head on, keep constant power applied when cresting and apply more power when at the peek to generate forward momentum as much as possible so to not get caught in the “splash” -Medium vessels with moderate movement speeds: Try as much as possible to identify where the peek of the wave is and avoid it. Take lower side of the wave head on and apply power when cresting and more power when at peek. -Smaller vessels: try to avoid head on contact, attempt to surf the wave to the low side and crest with speed. Experienced personnel will know the weight of the vessel they operate and will generally know how to maneuver through the situation. Every scenario is different so experience and awareness of your cargo will play a huge part in these high risk situations.
