For what it's worth, I took early retirement 6 years ago at the age of 60, having worked continuously for 43 years. I lifted my lump sum, seen places in the world with my wife that, otherwise, Id never have had the opportunity. I also changed the bike, changed the car, and paid-off my mortgage and a few other debts. Yes, I gave up a secure and reasonably well paid job 6+ years before I needed to, I have a lot less cash in the bank than 6 years ago, but do you know what, I've had an absolute blast!! So, in my opinion, if your company decides your role is 'surplus to requirement' and you've done your sums for day-to-day survival, take your redundancy and run. Good luck with it all.

I just did the same. Same work length but unfortunately not all the best paying until I landed a good job 20 years ago. It was a stressful job and I decided to retire before I would get a full pension but with my savings combined with the reduced pension I will have no problems. It is sad that retiring at 60 is considered early though.

Fingers crossed for your redundo John - whatever happens, if you make KZbin your "job", I predict you will have a much happier life and you'll wonder why you didn't do it sooner....although it's highly likely you will be considerably poorer (at least that has been my experience, very happy but skint - I take happy over money any day of the week)......

Hey Chops I'm in my late 50's and grafted all my life for little recognition. I persuaded my old boss to let me do 4 days a week - I don't need the money & would rather spend more time out on the bike. Monday to Thursday is more hectic but the new boss gave me a pay rise because he thought I might leave! In my experience companies don't always reward 'the guy who gets things done' but on the other hand they won't let them go at redundancy time. Qualifications and certificates mean nothing if you can't get things done - don't put yourself down - this is why your boss chose to keep you. My advice is drop down to 3 days and see how it goes for a year - maybe in the future you could go back to 4 days?

All I’d say is, your only here once and there’s more to life than money! I semi retired at 55 and have done things that I never thought I’d do, I’m now doing three days a week just to keep my hand in and was suddenly struck down with a heart issue at 60, after having major open heart surgery in January this year and on the road to recovery, I’d say go live it fella, cos you never know what’s round the corner! Best of luck with the future, loving all your content👌🏽👍🏽

I see alot of those high hedge rows right next to the roadway in England moto videos.....I assume they are planted on purpose. What do you do if you have a breakdown of cars/trucks? No road shoulders to pull over on? How do you plan any escape route in case of manuever emergency? Just pile into the bushes? Ohhh, you going thru a "rif", that's what it's called here in the US, "rif" - reduction in force. I've been through myself (as an older worker) and as a manager enforced rifs. It's a shi___ business to go through. Upper management (from the accounting side, of course) usually just gives you a number you have to get to as well as timing. HR gives you the guidelines of what to give riffed personnel. Typically it's 2 weeks pay for every year. We also have to give ins info on what we call "Cobras" - temporary ins coverage - 18 - 36 months. Based on your employer's ins coverage but there is no company help to pay so it's expensive. As a manager looking at your direct reports, and picking who goes and who stays ends up really being rather arbitrary and that's what makes it a lousy experience, playing with people's lives but what to do when business numbers won't support company targets for overhead?

Never known anyone be so happy about the announcement of redundancies! :D I'm a similar age to you and they've just opened up VR where I work. I'd be very tempted as I've worked here a while, but don't have an opportunity like a very successful YT to fall back on. If I did - I'm sure I'd be straight on the list - so I can see why it's tempting. However it works out, we'll still be here supporting you however we can, on the proviso you continue to release such great content - so no "Lambchops Goes Fishing" (although that does sound hilarious!)....

Hi John which ever way it goes you will be ok, it's human instinct to survive & progress & you will, of course it's a worry but once you iron out the wrinkles you will probably wonder why did i not do this sooner? we are all behind you, keep on keeping on, your content is pretty dam good as it is if you ask me? have you seen some other peoples content it does not even match up to what you are putting out, & to say your Audio is on point it is, that also makes a video because from this side of the fence (screen) there is nothing worse the bloody loud music or vocals, you seem to be able to get that just right , nothing worse than having to keep turning the volume up & down to compensate for what you are trying to watch? any way this is long enough so ATB Wayne ....😀👍

If you go part-time in your current role the risk is they will expect 5 days work to be done in 3, you would also spend the 2 'off' days worrying about what you have to do in the other 3. I'd consider becoming a contractor (if your role is suited to that) then you could then take on contracts when it suits you and have time off between contracts. As a biker, working over the winter months and taking the summer off would be a great solution.

“Should I stay, or should I go now? If I go, there will be trouble And if I stay, it will be double”😉 The Clash circa 1982. I put myself up for voluntary redundancy at the beginning of Covid. It was an extremely well paid position. I must say it really messed with my head for the first few months, what the hell have I done ! however as I mentally adjusted and learnt to live with a significantly reduced cut of my cloth I came to realise that it was an excellent decision. Work colleagues are constantly telling me how they wished they could have done it. I am genuinely happier now and sleep so much better. The final test was an invitation back after my industry had improved post Covid, Nope! really humbled by the invitation, alas just could not face going back despite the money. “Though I'm a poor boy, I can still be happy As long as I can feel free” Supertramp circa 1980’s

Regarding the Return to work requirement given your contract is office based make sure they wont force disciplinary action if you don’t comply. They could potentially get rid of you on that basis. Also should you drop to 3 days a week they’ll probably issue you with a new contract which could invalidate a redundancy payment on your previous 23 years service. It would be considered the same as changing jobs / company . Really check the small print and how you might be affected. Whilst you’re still employed use their resources to bring your technical certifications up to date. Then if the worst happens for whatever reason and you part company you’re still fully certified which means if push comes to shove you could always get another job if needed or do some freelance work. Also be aware if you have a pension regardless of work status you can withdraw a 25% tax free lump sum at the age of 55 years. Good luck!

Our company specialises in planning people’s next move when they are made redundant, we have hundreds of career coaches, access to financial planners, retirement planning - literally any direction people want to take, we can plan it. So if you are made redundant, ask for an outplacement service. It’s very common (even law) in some parts of the EU, and more common in the US but outplacement would plan your next career with someone expert in doing that.

John, look at it this way, if it's meant to be then things will drop into place, a redundancy payout would give you the financial freedom to go for it full time, if that doesn't happen then a 3 day/week would also give you the chance to devote more time to the channel whilst maintaining an income from your job, either way it's a win win situation! Keep up the content, your always informative, unbiased & above all else.......entertaining, which is what keeps us tuning in! Best of luck mate!!

Hopefully you can find some middle ground where you can work your three days a week and keeping your job for at least a few years more but also at the same time, grow the channel as you want. Maybe try to grow the channel in stages but having a regular income also helps as well. Also, remember to think about the unforeseen things like the economy or injury, things of that nature. I would try my best to fine a middle ground,..just in case. I do hope your channel explodes and goes exactly how you want it to I thoroughly enjoy your videos I particularly like your shop videos they are very informative and I agree with everybody here, saying it’s not just what you’re doing but how you’re doing it, with your personality, with the way you bring things to the table and how you do things. I’ve seen your channel grow over the years and it has came along way from the first videos you did. It has already progressed leaps and bounds in the way you present and edit your videos. I live in Texas and they are a lot of people on KZbin that do videos in and around my area. Most of them are boyish, childish frankly stupid, half the time, but your videos have a nice sense of humor, a little funny, lighthearted, but all professional, with a sense of taste and style, and I think that’s what most people enjoy the most about your videos and we hope that we don’t lose that type of personality that you bring to your videos.

I’ll give you another angle chops, if you think you’re getting past it in the IT job, imagine in a few years as a full time motorcycle KZbinr ! What I mean is when you get to 59 like me and your stiff as *u*k and can’t get your legs bent enough on the pegs, or after an hour you’re rolling around with aches in every joint. Stay at home/in the office and keep the channel like it is. Good that is.

Ohh it's like a little soap opera! waiting for the email telling you one way or another must be really agonising. Anyway keep up with your high quality videos and you will always have loads of support 👍 Side note I was throttle up throttle down off brakes on brakes all through the video 😅

Stay a little bit, is a big decision. If they pay u, that is a safe way out. To sell your H2 just to pay the bills, that is not the way. I worked for UK project for companies and i understand what you are saying by "get the things done".

As my missus always says "There's no pressure like financial pressure". So as long as the maths all work out, then why the heck not. If there's any reliance on 'possibly maybe's' from motorcycle brands' marketing departments though, then personally I'd give it a lot of thought as, when the economy's tough - like it is at the minute - the first things to often get slashed are marketing budgets. Good luck sir and hopefully you'll get that redundancy!!

Im just watching this now! I for one think you can do it. I love your vids. And i love the fact that you are the same age as me and aren't afraid of change! I did say before dont change the vids. But maybe its a sign? And ill give you thirty quid for the h2. Its crash damaged after all!😅

Redundancy money only lasts so long. Don't ignore your expenses; mortgage , energy, insurance , day to day living etc. If you would be getting your pension as part of your comp. retirement then that would be best. And please stop referring to the H2 as a pension substitute. It cannot be. A pension would be a regular payment that you can depend upon, the H2 would just be a one off. Anyway, take care and best wishes for the future.

Yeah let’s all work all our life , pay into a pension, to then retire find out your pension is worth nothing then die, F##K that , live for now and enjoy what you have and an do now.

You'll start thinking differently when you get a little older. While I agree with live life and have fun, it's important to take care of your family and responsibilities. So there has to be a middle ground.

I worked in IT for 40 years...I was in Technical Support/projects. I know exactly what you mean regarding having to relearn job all the time....used to envy lawyers etc where all changed very slowly. At 58 there was restructure at work and I was offered redundancy.....would have been £70k. Just before accepted they obviously checked cost and withdrew offer 😢. I was gutted....eventually escaped at 61 with a bit of a bung but nowhere near £70k. Listening to you brought all back. Thing is all useless people who'd achieved nothing got the redundancy. Tread carefully 😊

Anything over £30k redundancy, just shove into your pension. Although you look young and fit (!) retirement isn’t that far away Chopsie so you’ll get it back soon. I wish you all the best. You’re a really genuine chap and a complete natural at this KZbin lark!

When redundancies were first mentioned at my place lots of people who had 20 years service or more went on the sick. Those were the people who got there redundancy money.
