It's such an eloquent line because of the double entendre. Pick up the shogi pieces because his son needs to grieve, and pick up his son's pieces to help put him back together as his father.

Episode 82 is definitely among my favourite episodes of the series. Not only because it's a Shikamaru episode since he's one of my favourites but also because it's so deep, artistic and well paced. It's definitely a change from the "normal" shippuden episodes with a very clear message.

It's like since Asuma's death Shikamaru closed up and wasn't dealing with his emotions, he was just expecting for everything to get resolved on it's own. But the talk with his father was the turning point. So well made!

Yeah that part with Kurenai was the single best shot in the whole of Shippudden. This was one of the few episodes where they actually tried to be artsy, the others include a certain fight a bit later in Shippuden and a certain backstory episode in Boruto. But this is the most beautiful

Parents will not be arrested. If there is a child in need, the adults around you will help you.

Between that moment Shikamaru has with Shikaku and that shamisen while he's playing shogi by himself, this is one of my favorite episodes. This episode came out the week after we graduated high school, and my older brother died a couple of weeks after we graduated. It was my first major loss. Coincidentally, I moved back to our hometown yesterday, 09/09/2024, and stopped by the cemetery to have coffee at his marker, and our cousin 1 row up from him. Tsunade's line about loss really hits me today. Walking around town realising how many of my friends are gone now while I'm still here.

Since its never shown in the anime, from here on out Shikamaru starts smoking and using that lighter in the manga. The anime doesn't feature it simply because they were trying not to glamorize smoking for kids. During the "The Damn smoke, gets in my eyes." scene he was smoking Asuma's last cigarette, then from thereon out he would smoke once in a while. Kishimoto drew this into his panels fully well knowing the anime would censor it. The scene still works without the cigarette, as its smoking on the floor and the smoke could rise.

One of the most interesting things about the shogi scene between Shikamaru and his father? It doesn't exist in the manga. This scene is beautiful and I think it's one of the best examples I've seen of how the two mediums differ and how various techniques can be used to bring out the strengths of one or the other. I don't think this scene would look good on manga pages, as it's largely still and unchanging with a large amount of dialogue. But in anime form it's extremely impactful. The arms moving to move the pieces, Shikamaru's posture slowly changing as Shukaku speaks... The showrunners deserve the utmost praise for constructing this scene.

God this era of Naruto was truly peak. The realistic way that they explain how war is profitable-but primarily for large superpower nations, while smaller countries dont really get that benefit, almost like the real world. (More of that comes into play when Naruto gets a very stern talking to in the future by...someone.) And the grief process. I love how they handled the news of Asuma's death. The way Kurenai initally took the news-realistic of how anyone would react to hearing that someone they loved died in combat. The expression Naruto and Kakashi had on their faces when they got the news. And then Shikamaru's dad... what a Top tier father. Doesn't say much, but when he does its what you need to hear, not what you want to hear. First when he talked to Shikamaru after everyone got back from the Sasuke retrieval mission, and now basically telling his son "cry, its okay to let it all out, and when you're done get your head back in the game so you can handle this shit right."

Konahamaru crying is one of the subtle bits that makes this episode so painful; you're reminded painfully that this poor little guy has lost his grandfather AND his uncle in just the span of a few years. Asuma's death is an even bigger tragedy in that light, joining his old man in death so quickly. Also: this episode is so masterful, from the presentation to how it approaches the subject of death and grief. Shikamaru's behavior is entirely believable.s Shikaku's actions are a role model for helping his son cope with all the pain he has swirling around inside him; he doesn't get upset at Shikamaru for hurting, he doesn't raise his voice when Shikamaru gets direspectful, instead he tells him to do something that Shikamaru has clearly been feeling too afraid or shamed to think of doing out of survivor's guilt: *"Let it out."* Pain and grief are a part of life and growing up, and Asuma's death is a painful but powerful lesson on growth, grief and maturity. Seeing Shikamaru process this and slowly realize this is what makes this, arguably, one of the best episodes of Naruto Shippuden. Period.

Shikaku (Shikamaru's father) is one of the best characters in Naruto in my opinion. The way he reacts to situations and how he lectures his son has always been the best. And yes, "I'll pick up your pieces" is the best line EVER!😭 I like how episode 82 animation treats in Naruto movie style. The director and animators really grasp it with the animation to match how poetic the dialogue is in this episode.

I really liked the way Shikamaru's father, who seems almost Anbu-like, revealed that it's okay to be emotional. He called Shikamaru a coward before, Sasuke retrieval arc, which was why he called himself this time.

What Shimakaru is doing is not justice is revenge. But as you've seen in this episode, not everything is black and white but mostly gray. You can find reasons to justify a good person doing something morally wrong, but when a bad person does something good, it doesn't mean they are redeemed. As the show progresses, you'll explore the concepts of right and wrong, good and evil, and the show will make you question these moral boundaries.

With the shogi scene (not the sad one, the other one), Shikamaru was strategizing and he was using Asuma's words about comparing shogi pieces to shinobi as his inspiration. The appearance of the shogi board his father walked in on the next morning was the result of a successful strategy according to the intel he had about the two Akatsuki members so far. The success was shown with the pieces Shikamaru used to represent Hidan and Kakuzu both being in range to be taken by the knight piece, which he used to represent himself. He also took to heart the words Asuma said to him when he was looking at the intel they had on the Akatsuki before the first battle, so if any of his pieces were taken in the process of getting things lined up it was a failure. Or at least the pieces representing his comrades. Some of the pieces might have represented strategically used weaponry, for example the lance piece which can move as many spaces as are free but only forward.

If it wasnt apparent, the beauty that is staring you in the face throughout this episode is not the morbidity of Asuma, rather, how alive he is in his final message to Shikamaru. The lighter represents that morbidity that shikamaru carries, but the ******* represents Asuma's life/message. not gonna spoil it: you should already know what the message is by now.

The ending of episode 82 also reminds you that Kakashi stands on business. If you think back to the last conversation he had with Sauske before he left with the sound 4, he told him how almost everyone he cared about is dead. It makes you think about the relationships he still has now. Guy, Asuma, Kurenai..they're his contemporaries, similar to how Shikamaru, Kiba, and Lee are for Naruto. From the little scenes they showed in the series, you could tell that Asuma was one of Kakashi's homies. He was not gonna let this slide.

Shikamaru was always my favorite character in this show, even above Naruto. I get his personality, I'm the same in a lot of ways so I always resonated more with him than any of the others. I also want to add in that Shikamaru’s dad is smarter than Shikamaru himself here, when he walked in and saw the Chogi board picked up and used, not only did he get that Shikamaru had a plan in general but probably was able to deduce most of what Shikamaru himself had strategized. Yet he didn’t help him make any plan, didn’t offer to go with him. Shikamaru’s dad understood that his son had the wits and ability to coordinate this on his own, but also that he NEEDED to do this on his own. I wouldn’t be surprised (and have it as a fun head canon) if Shikamaru’s dad told Kakashi about the issue at hand and had him conveniently walk by the gates to add himself to the team.
