It is indeed a masterpiece. .Love It above Evita,, Phantom, Sunset Blvd. Joseph and... etc. It is simple ...Raw, honest . oh, don't get me wrong . all those alternatives are my favs as well. JCS was my 3rd stage experience.as a general character.. . After that I played Pilate, and then later Peter, and finally Augustine Magaldi , in Evita. All community / college productions LOL!. But it was so much fun!

It’s amazing that A.L.W. who’s Jewish as is Norman Jewison could write the play,etc,about a Jesus they don’t believe in!😊

I believe "masterpiece" in this context refers to the material written by Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber. How each director interprets it is a different matter. I saw Gale Edwards' production done on stage some years ago and that was a lot better than this video production, which tries to be both a stage show and a film at the same time and doesn't work. I agree with you that Norman Jewison's film is better. I would also recommend the video recording of the 2012 arena production with Tim Minchin as Judas, directed by Laurence Connor. That version, in my opinion, does the best job I've ever seen of bringing the original intention of the authors to life.
