Great video as usual, I can't wait to look for some this weekend. I recently started making some tinctures and found the glass weights for fermentation work great to keep larger ingredients submerged.

As someone who has spent a lot of time in the woods , I have an even greater appreciation of it now. After watching various videos , I find myself looking closer at the magical nature of it all ! In the past week I have found varnish cap and today some birch polypore. I am definitely hooked on the hunt for medicinal mushrooms. Also found some bears head which I am eating. I found it interesting that in this video you prefer to use grain alcohol in your tincture process, I suppose that increases extraction?. Thank you for the great videos ! Mark

Mushrooms actually help with taking dead animals etc, and returning them back to the earth. That's why they're not a vegetable/plant or animal.? They are miracles from our creator. 😎👍 I used to have some Chaga mushroom from the church trees. They're medicinal as well, and difficult to find in the southern states.

Random? Is there a reason to dry slices then chop vs putting thru a food processor to get super small pieces before drying?
@WildMeatLetsEat
@WildMeatLetsEat 3 жыл бұрын
You don't want to damage the mushrooms while soft.... a processor would definitely bruise and damage the cell walls of the mushroom. The idea is to take a good specimen and slice without total destruction, once the mushroom is dry there's minimal damage to the cell walls, it's dried and ready to go. I hope that makes sense and helps. Thanks for watching and happy hunting to ya!!

I have had very good luck finding various mushrooms in the past year. I am most interested in the medical benefits of them. I have turkey tail, artist conk, reishi, and birch poly pore tinctures. I am now searching for chaga . I saw somewhere where it grows on other than birch trees. I found some chaga like formations on a maple tree. My question is how do you tell the difference between what could be chaga verses a burl.
@WildMeatLetsEat
@WildMeatLetsEat 9 ай бұрын
Chaga grows longer in shape... a burl is more rounded, and once you cut into chaga, you'll see a blackish outer crust color, and the rust brown interior color is the giveaway. It won't be too hard to tell once you start cutting.

Unrelated to this video , do you have any experience with burdock root ? Tincture or tea ? Also the other night I ran low on past blue ribbon beer and I thought to myself, well you know my mushroom tincture have alcohol in them so why not take a swig. To make a long story short , I woke the next morning with a strange white web like substance covering my head and an unusual desire to seek out a mossy place in the woods and take a nap .I guess I may have overdone the previous night a bit . thanks, Mark

About the tincture: how many drops or teaspoons do you use per day? Thanks for your video. I did a tincture and then forgot about it 🙈 what happens if you let it sit too long? Like several months instead of weeks? Do you throw away the mushrooms after the extraction or use it for tea? Thanks for your help 😀
@WildMeatLetsEat
@WildMeatLetsEat 3 жыл бұрын
I put 6ml. under the tongue once or twice a day depending on how I feel. If I'm feeling under the weather defiantly twice a day. As for letting sit longer than 6 weeks... no worries, just strain and you're good to go! You could make a dual extraction at this point... adding about 1 or two table spoons of decoction/tea to the alcohol tincture... that way you're getting the best of both worlds but that's another video. So just compost the leftover mushrooms/mark. I hope that helps and thanks for watching!!!

Hi, thanks for the video! I picked a bunch of these in th NJ Pinelands yesterday. They are a little past their prime with the pore surfaces brown and the tops are a little dark, but they are still moist and white on the insides. No bugs. I was thinking about peeling the dark top layer off, as well as removing the pore surface before, cutting them up and dehydrating them. My question is, are the insides just as medicinal? Or am I losing too much by removing that outer layer? Any harm in consuming older specimens? Thanks!
@WildMeatLetsEat
@WildMeatLetsEat 3 жыл бұрын
You're welcome. This is a fall mushroom so the specimens you found are fairly old... one of the primary worries would be mold, however mold needs moisture and typically doesn't grow well in colder environments. You should not loose any medicinal value but I would pay close attention to anything that may look like mold. Mold is also the thing we're trying to avoid while drying mushrooms... it can make you really sick when ingested... you're probably okay but always be cautious when dealing with older polypore mushrooms. I would probably pass. The good news is if you should choose to pass... you now know where to find them next fall. Hope that helps and thanks for watching!!!

Just to be sure there are no gills,a kind of mottled top with a creamy beige color,it's on a birch tree,which I am not sure how to identify,and a little tough.also when the underside is dark brown and pores can be seen,don't take those.
@WildMeatLetsEat
@WildMeatLetsEat 3 жыл бұрын
Its okay if you see the pores... they should be white or creamy in color... just try to avoid the brown or dark brown pores. Typical the top of the mushroom will be white washed with age and the pore side will be darker, those are the ones I would avoid... past there prime. I hope that helps and again thanks for watching!
@jswets5007
@jswets5007 2 жыл бұрын
You have most likely learned by now, but just in case. Birch trees can be identified fairly quickly by their bark. It is thin and peels easily, in large strips, from dead trees. It is also lighter in color on living trees than most others in the forest, and becomes very light when the tree dies.
