What role do the mind and spirit play in the spontaneous remission of incurable illness? In this powerful talk, Dr. Jeffrey Rediger uses stories of "impossible" recoveries to illustrate unexplored possibilities latent within the mind, body, and spirit. A theologian and Harvard physician, Dr. Rediger discusses how spiritual wellness and fulfillment are an integral part of being human and contribute to one's ability to flourish.
Jeffrey Rediger, MD, MDiv is on the faculty of Harvard Medical School, and the Medical Director of McLean SE and Community Services at McLean Hospital in Boston, Massachusetts. A fully licensed physician and a board-certified psychiatrist, he also has a Master of Divinity from Princeton Theological Seminary and publishes in the fields of medicine, psychiatry and spirituality. His research involves the investigation of remarkable recoveries from incurable or fatal illnesses. He has been featured on the Oprah Winfrey, Dr. Oz, and Anderson Cooper 360 shows, among others. To learn more about Dr. Rediger, visit his blog at www.medicineofhopeandpossibility.com.
This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at ted.com/tedx

Dr Rediger saved my life. I was a patient at one of the facilities he works at. I call him ''The Super man of Psychiatry''. He is amazingly humble and down to earth despite his extremely successful career. He is a beautiful man, way ahead of his time!

When I had a diagnosis of breast cancer back in 2003, I said, "No" to traditional treatment at 3 top Boston Hospitals and made a decision to bring my body back into balance and to understand the root causes of illness and disease. This is because 6 months earlier, I happened to go to a conference and heard a woman who spoke briefly and reversed her diagnosis by following an alkaline lifestyle. I did not want to cause my body any harm from doing radiation, chemo, drugs or surgery. What is so amazing is that I never suffered 1 sick day from cancer in all of these 13 years. And, my 2 sisters who also had diagnoses and did the traditional treatment said that they wish they followed what I did because it was the better way. They both died a couple of years ago, and today, I live an energetic, vibrant life making a difference here on earth. I am filled with gratitude that I was willing and open to make a paradigm shift and look at health and wellness instead of sickness and disease. It's a most beautiful journey that ultimately brings you true joy!

Enjoyed this immensely, I healed five fractures of my pelvis in record time with guided imagery. Four years ago, I had just finished the book "How your mind can heal your body" by David Hamilton, PhD the very evening I fell down my steps. I did not think it was a coincidence but rather.."You believe this, practice it". I was in a hospital bed in my den for a month. I downloaded "Whistle While you Work" from Snow White and played while I imagined I had elves spraying new bone on my fractures. I had fun with it and only did it once a day. I have had absolutely no problems with my pelvis since. If you haven't seen Dr. Joe Dispenza's work, check it out.

I’m atheist but I follow Buddhist principles and mindfulness to heal my mind and body. You don’t have to believe in a God to find healing and spirituality... but you HAVE to believe in yourself and try to keep the right mindset! I know it’s tough- I’m going through stuff too but we got this!! Ps: I’m not dissing God - if it helps you to have faith in something higher than you then you do what makes YOU happy but don’t rely on outside forces - save yourself, have faith in yourself and believe that you are stronger than your illness.

I really like that this guy was not pretentious at all. Often westerners who decide to delve into Dharma based religions for rebellious reasons tend to pretentiously speak of their new found religion as automatically superior, usually without even an in depth study to compare this claim against scrutiny - or in a similar way will call Eastern medicine traditions as superior to western. This man instead mentioned that there were benefits to both forms of medicine, and that combining the two different ways of looking at medicine could give us a more wholesome understanding of it. I really like that.

@@mahnrut I hear you. But there are many similar stories of those who have tried western medicine first and folk medicine first, having no success. There are a lot of con artists out there, and not enough standards and regulations with folk medicine in most cases. Because of this, if one attempts to take the route of folk medicine, he has to be very careful to do his own due diligence in making sure that it is not a scam.

Excellent! So inspiring. I am fortunate to know many people who have brought about health in themselves through personal dedication and follow-through with focus on their body's actions with the help of an alternative medical practitioner, their mind's peace through meditation (whether sitting, moving or standing) and the acceptance of and belief in their themselves and their choices. Powerful. Dr. Rediger is brilliant in combining the trifecta of studies in theology, medicine and psychiatry: a true marriage of western sensibilities and ancient eastern knowledge. (Just a note: my audio was excellent on a mac laptop at 1/3 volume)

I think the mind and the body are two different aspects of the same system or manifestations of the fields of vibrating strings of which systems are made. People and the universe may also be aspects of the same things. But on a more mundane level, cancer seems to be the culmination of multiple insults to the body. That might be why a remission can sometimes happen after attacking the problem on several fronts at once, physical, spiritual, psychological, etc.

Dear Dr. Rediger, I thoroughly enjoyed your TED talk and, being a student of Christian Science myself, have to wonder if you have read the book, "Science and Health With Key To The Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy. If you have not yet read it, I think you will find it most inspiring, supplying you with answers to some of your questions. Jackie Page

Great talk. Thank you. However, I think the conclusion that technology is going to be the way deeper into our own nature, instead of us naturally going deeper into our own nature and AWAY from the technologies which produce and exacerbate dis-ease, is a fundamentally flawed assumption and kind of pollutes his wonderful message. If only the makers of the technology were above human nature. The drive for power and control will surely be used in ways antithetical to health but pro-exorbitant profits. Greed and power should never be underestimated or minimized for the sake of unhealthy optimism toward or unhealthy hope in technology. Healthy hope and healthy optimism are so important, but displaced into technology or even the medical establishments will create a lot of disappointment via a type of idolatry (and I don’t mean religious idolatry, but it’s the best word for it). We don’t need technological advances nearly, and I mean nearly, as much as we a reconnection to nature. God bless 🙏

Idk about that, people who do these practices versus those who don't and solely rely on God, don't heal. You have to put the work into it yourself, thats like saying God will feed you if are starving, no need to work. You have to work to earn the money to buy the food. I believe in God, but I believe God wants you to heal yourself.

Dr retiger was my doctor in McLean hospital 2 years ago. He couldn’t diagnose me even after two weeks. He created the hospital. He is a very fair guy but also has a very strange plastic attitude in person. It’s like he has no feelings, and see’s right through you. He might end up being my doctor again in the future. He is somewhat scary and everyone thinks he’s a celebrity because his appearance on Oprah.

Are you speaking about the Dr. Redinger in this TED Talk? I assume although the spelling is different? I’ve found that to be the case w/ ALOT of docs I’ve seen in my life, or worse they have this “God Complex” & if they cannot immediately diagnose you, they will convince you, it is ALL in your head, OR that you’re up to No good, (like drug seeking🙄🤯😡) . Yet, it seems possible to just a lay person like me, that the majority of doctors I’ve had to have contact with, they seem to lose their bedside manner, or humanity which maybe it’s because if they empathize to much with each patient they would go NUTS, or lose the ability to think & or perform subjectively? Just a thought? I’m going to look for that Oprah interview, (if it is the same Dr. you’re referring to?) thnx! ☮️

@CBD Miracle What do you mean he is scary? He isn't the healer, your mind is. The doctor isn't doing the work, you are-remember that. They do aide in your recovery, but the actual healing comes from within. Let me recommend DNRS by Annie Hopper
