Would you believe that even at this stupid length there's a good 30 minutes or so total I cut from various points so as to not completely destroy the pacing? For example, a ten minute dive into Mega Man music composers that ground the video to a screeching halt. Also tons of nitpicking and rants about the game that just felt too mean spirited. I was just gonna clear out the BN4 files for storage space like usual, but I decided I should start holding on to that sorta stuff from now on, in case I ever get enough support to start a Patreon. Would probably make a halfway decent Patron reward.

the story can be fixed if Dark Chips were a new fad that net battlers were doing, and they were directly tied to why Duo read humans as evil. the villain used his organization to throw them into circulation. have them introduced way earlier and make the Shademan boss hard enough to tempt you into using the dark chips rather than making him invincible to normal attacks

43:55 The reason why WizardDog's rival is WizardMonkey is actually based on a Japanese expression "Fighting like Dogs and Monkeys", which is almost exactly the same as saying "Fighting like Cats and Dogs" in English. It's unfortunatley an example of poor localization to not have the answer to be WizardCat. Fun Fact: the expression is actually the reason why in Star Fox the Cornerian Army (an army of entirely Dogs and Canines) fight Andross and the Venomian Army (an army of entirely Monkeys and Primates)

I wouldn’t know, but I wonder if it’s a scam in Asian countries in general. Even in various translated novels I’ve read before (Chinese and Japanese, who knows, maybe some Korean ones have it too), such a scenario has been referenced (some are bumping into people, some are intentionally falling and then getting a death grip on people approach showing concern in an attempt to hustle them or threaten them to hand over their money or risk having charges pressed on them for knocking over and injuring an elderly). It’s weird.
@Mikazuchireborn
@Mikazuchireborn 2 ай бұрын
It is. The trope is used a ton in anime. Some thugs bump into you, grinning that you injured them and try to extort money. Most of the time I see it used, it plays out exactly like in this game. Some hero or tough guy will come in to beat them up.

yeah, It's so weird. it's like the "main plot" was just some MMBN 3 DLC, and then the actual plot of duo/dark chips/nebula is this whole other potentially interesting story that gets almost zero mention, despite the connecting threads being there. Instead it's this werid plot where nebula wants to harvest an asteroid that has deemed humanity as worth nuking a planet over and screwing up billions of dollars of equipment (and almost killing an 11 year old boy). But... he works at Not-Nasa. he coulda just said "hey lemme jack in and explore this" before they built a billion dollar laser for him to sabatoge. Also dark chips (and wtf happened to shademan? I played 5 so I know that bastard isn't dead)

@@raze2012_ Yeah they could have had a story that acted as a precursor to BN5. Where you build a team through one tournament segment. "Who would know that stuff?" I mean... they wouldn't know about the final bosses, probably. But also, he and Mega did beat down WWW members on national TV. Sunayama and DesertMan, to be specific - Sunayama was broadcasting Chaud trying to give up his PET to save his father, so both Lan beaning him with a PET and the subsequent NetBattle (or at least the results of it) would also be broadcasted, since there was no time to cut the feed. (and I'm pretty sure Ribitta wouldn't allow the feed to be cut anyway) With that and all of the stuff for the N1 Grand Prix before that, literally everyone should be aware of Lan Hikari. The way things have gone so far, he should be a NetBattling idol for a good handful of people. People should be either nervous about going up against him or excited to fight a living legend, and people should be swarming him every time he steps outside of ACDC Town. His place of residence should be public knowledge since he made no effort to hide it at all (which I guess it is with how easily new people find it in every game), and the only reason he'd have some peace and quiet in ACDC proper is because everyone knows him well enough to stop being starstruck every single time he NetBattles someone. Obviously I'm embellishing a little bit, but my point is, who *wouldn't* know about Lan after he shows up on national TV beating the heck out of a WWW member?

For my second "not-a-reply-on-some-other-comment" comment, a note about "Halberd" Princess: Apparently her Japanese name is "Masakari Hime". A masakari is an axe/hatchet, The Internet says it's specifically a hatchet with a broad blade. Apparently it's referred to as a "battle axe" at times, but it's not actually intended as a weapon (though it may have been used as one in the past.) So, basically, I don't know what the translation team was doing when they called her Halberd Princess, when Hatchet Princess should have probably been used. MMBN4's translation is going to be as frustrating and mysterious as it wants to be.

1:36:30 a note on DS Navis: the pool of available chips for a DS Navi is based on chips you use. The more frequently you use a chip, the more likely a DS Navi will use it. This also extends to Mega, Giga, and Dark Chips, but NOT Program Advances. MegamanDS in particular is only as scary as your own play style. A player with a particularly light soul, who relies heavily on PAs and Dimmers will find their Dark Double not having much to fight you with.

I've heard that the reason for the sudden change of sprites and alteration of the art style going forward was to both modernize the series a little bit, and also to save space on the ROM due to the sheer amount of content each new entry introduced after 3. Souls, for instance, have each an entire spreadsheet each, which is completely separate from Megaman's, unlike in the last two games where the Styles were cleverly mixed with the base spreadsheet, only adding new details on top of it. Because of this, a lot of things were made smaller and simple to compensate. For example, Megaman's wide range of battle sprites and animations were axed from this game going forward, being about half as many. In 6, even, they had to be creative with that game's battle mechanic, and instead of making a brand new set of sprites, they simply modeled the upper part of Megaman's body into the new transformations, probably to keep saving space. Unsurprising, considering just how much cut content that game had due to space constraints. So, yeah, the games were getting too big for the poor little cartridges at this point, unfortunately.

A lot more gameplay mechanics to play around with and way better designs all around. I have Double Team DS so the version exclusive thing didn't bother me. The only part of the game that really get's on my nerves is the 100 foe challenge. It's just really hard because you have to move diagonally which is hard to do quickly and reliably and towards the end it get's really hard with just 1 mistake meaning failure. I wish they just had them mapped to the 4 cardinal directions so that it was easier. Also the support navi's aren't balanced in the slightest. With a few being insanely good and most others being completely useless.

Eh, I think the video was alright but I think some of the criticism's he has while I could see from being a kid because I made them myself as a teen are after upon retrospect, are not warranted on some parts. For example, the RNG fights he mentions about the CyberBat part on solving a puzzle. That's been a problem in almost ALL the games already and secondly, this game does have a sub chip that makes weaker enemies especially avoidable with a sub chip Sneak Run hell you can run that in the custom Navi last I remember in 4. Unlike previous games that required the whole "you nEED ESCAPE Chip RNG." Also, those sub chips are about 200 zenny so they are fucking cheap. Realize it won't stop Random encounters but unless its a harder fight but they will not occur as much as if he didn't use them. A better critique should be the lack of time you get and how you have to keep going back to return on the device which causes the random encounters to be more likely to stop you. Game has a lot of bad dialogue/grammar but the people saying they love the game did not ever state story ever, only the mechanics of the game which I think while broken were unique and cool foundations that later games would improve on so people who like the game aren't talking about the grammar (not saying that comment doesn't exist but the ones he threw there made no sense other than they just like the game.) I think the Soul Unision was a lot more cooler imo with how it went back to OG Megaman. Lastly the button mashing yes I'll agree it needed to be clearer but tbh I figured that shit out as a kid by just frantically panicking and pressing every button not sitting there just saying WTF!!!! Duo after figuring out how to hit him is pretty fucking easy in Red Sun with Roll/Search Soul he's harder in Blue Moon although I haven't played Blue moon in a while.

Battle Network 4 sold the most copies of each battle network release. The Battle Network games were seeing an increase in sales numbers with each game, with 4 having the highest. There was hype being built up for the new mechanic of Soul Unions and all. However, because of all the terrible decisions of repetitive gameplay, lazy writing, and for us outside Japan, the horrendous translation, just killed the series. After 4 all subsequent games sold less, and Capcom decided to end the series. The DS updated version of the first Battle Network was never released outside of Japan because the sales numbers were so incredibly low. If you want a more in-depth look at Battle Network 4 from the Blue Moon perspective I'd suggest heading over to the LP Archive and searching for Epee Em's playthrough. It's a hilarious read with info on the sales numbers at one section. I have heard that Blue Moon can't be played on a GBA SP either. I guess that whatever emulation that the DS uses with it's GBA port was probably the same software used in the SP.

58:41 - That’s actually a unique attack to Roll called Roll Dance. She spins in place, leaving an afterimage and trailing sparkles in her previous place (note how concussive attacks like Cannon go right through it and how panel-stealing chips like Area Grab don’t register Roll when she’s flashing up mid-spin). Basically Roll turns herself into glittery sparkles, maybe moves around with her often touted but never previously demonstrated super speed (I’ll get to that), and instantly reforms in another spot so quickly she was probably just better off warping around the field normally. Roll previously used Roll Dance offensively back in BN2 to fucking one-shot telefrag her bugged out doppelgänger, implying she can actually freely move as her sparkles form for a bit before doing the actual instant teleportation thing. Like she bum-rushed her crummy clone in sparkle form, teleported right back to where she came from in such fashion to kill the clone, and then just seemingly Air Shoe’d (which was a Battle Chip until 4; also Roll naturally levitates but this game and 4.5 made it clear she only has Float Shoes) over from the bottomless pit that is... everywhere else in the immediate area.

The unconnected story can be fixed by adding Darkchips in the tournaments, something like Nebula giving out free Darkchips to net battlers which creates a trend that affect millions of Navi, Duo saw this as a sign of evil and decided to destroy Earth. Megaman faced against Navis that use Darkchips in the tournament and slowly succumbed to the corruption himself. And we don't even need to replay the whole game three times with very simple fix: Make all 6 souls obtainable in one run and after you defeat Duo, you return to the final stage.There, you can defeat Duo again to up the difficulty and refresh the mystery datas (important ones like HP Memory will stay until you collect them). The door to post game areas will only open at the highest level of difficulty. Of course you'll have to re-jack in every place you have visited but would you rather have that than replaying the whole game? Wonder what genius think that 80% of the game consist of filter side stories is what makes a good game.

For the Toyrobo scenario, you have to read stories placed all over Castillo to figure out the puzzles. The only issue with that is the game doesn't tell you about, nor is there a system to let Lan read the stories while Megaman is in the Comp.

It doesn't help that the answer is just a signboard with lots of text dump, while the other games (Numberman, Flashman and Diveman scenarios) at least put an interesting display so the players would be encouraged to look and remember better

1:33:40 Yeah, it’s absolutely something that was lost in the translation. Netto tells you more or less to keep moving and don’t let it take you away, implying “press buttons”. Same goes for a lot of hidden mechanics just not being translated, because of text box limitations and a rushed localization.

I mean its shown that Roll is pretty competent besides in the games, but has that naive nature that gets her kidnapped. Also I think it was meant to be a moral lesson of be careful with creepers on the internet which is kind of jarring to see in a Megaman game although it also throws that weird whole Girl power thing which was odd to it but I guess they didn't want to go too far into something that dark and went with tag girl power

EDIT: I didn't remember all the typos. The game is okay in my opinion. The biggest crime of mmbn4 is being a mediocre (and the FIRST mediocre) game in a series where every mainline sequel exponentially improved the series. I liked the twist with Regal being willys son, but kind of wish they brought Sean back. Making a story where regal and Sean interacted, with regal being Wilys son, and Sean being heavily influenced by Wily at a young age they could have a whole lot of paralels and interesting story beats. The game was rushed and put out at a time where capcom mindlessly pumped out mega man sequels.

I've seen people say that Battle Network 4 is their favorite game in the series. And I mean, hey, more power to them. You like what you like. I just want to know how. - The game is just so disorganized and disjointed, padding out all of the gameplay with menial tasks that never feel rewarding to complete. - Lan and MegaMan aren't aware of the main plot, what little there is, until shortly before the credits roll. - Lan keeps a Dark Chip that he's told will destroy the soul of his brother for half the game just because, only to instantly destroy it later. - Nebula and Dark Chips are half-baked ideas that are forgotten about in the service of participating in more tournaments. - There's only two main villains aside from the final boss and you don't have a proper boss fight with either until right before the final boss. - The folder building is worse with rigid codes that don't give enough support to Souls and that's ACCOUNTING for the V2 and V3 virus chips that come on New Game +. - The Navi Customizer has had compression codes removed and made a number of programs bigger, which makes working with them more of a pain. And that's just scratching the surface!

Speaking of villains, when you think about it, Regal is not needed for this story. Him being there has absolutely no bearing on the looming asteroid about to destroy Earth. Honestly, it feels like with a bit of work, Regal can be written out of the story and have Nebula be a group of rogue Navis led by LaserMan. It’s a special kind of awful when one of the supposed big bag villains of the game can easily be written out of the story.

You wanting LaserMan to reappear made me remember a question I’ve had about Battle Network; why is this series so picky about which Navis can be brought back from the dead? It’s been established since the first game that a deleted Navi can be brought back through the use of back-up data. Dex did it for Gutsman in the first game, and Chaud did it for Protoman in the second, but more often than not, especially in the case of antagonist Navis, it’s treated that a deleted Navi can never be brought back. Off the top of my head, I remember in the endgame of 3 Lan was surprised the WWW Navis were back even though he shouldn’t, and in 6 the operator of JudgeMan got angry at Lan for deleting him towards the end of the game and acts as if he’s gone forever, even though we deleted him earlier in the game and he came back, so it feels like he can come back again. I know MegaMan can’t because of his unique circumstances, and rogue Navis can’t because they have no backup data, but everyone else should be fair game.
@TheAzulmagia
@TheAzulmagia 3 жыл бұрын
@@XIIIHearts LaserMan never came back because he was a fan design, so he was only used in 4 (and the 4 adjacent spin-off 4.5). Aside from that, though, a Navi's ability to be brought back is dependent on how good of a programmer their operator is. The DS remake of BN1 added some extra dialogue about how Ms. Madd and Count Zap wanted Dr. Wily to restore their deleted Navis because they couldn't do it themselves.

It will forever baffle me that this game is the second best-selling Mega Man game of all time. Ahead of Mega Man X, behind only Mega Man 2. Really speaks to just how successful Battle Network actually *was* at the time.
@UltimaKeyMaster
@UltimaKeyMaster 3 жыл бұрын
It's not surprising. It's because Battle Network 3 was so good, 4 sold based on hype alone. Pay close attention to the fact that 5 *fucking tanked* in sales and 6 was a rather abrupt ending in a franchise that ALMOST NEVER ends its subseries on the off-chance they feel like making another one. And 5+6, and Star Force as a whole, are way better games than BN4. It honestly gives me the theory that BN4 single-handedly doomed the Battle Network series. Of course, a way easier theory is that early 2000's Mega Man was so absolutely immensely over-saturated, it tanked EVERYTHING across the board...coincidentally while most of the franchises worst entries were releasing all around the same half-decade span with X6, X7 and BN4.

1:18:00 Actually, Mr. Famous' navis aren't just his obsections, his navis from both BN2 and BN3 (i think also 4 as well, but I'm not sure) are from irl fan competitions that capcom held in japan, the winner managed to create a navi that would be featured in game. The franchise also has more navis that are created from fans, like most of the evil organization from 6, the main villain from the crossover between BN and star force and much more.
