I unironically think this is one of the most peak moments of MMBN plot. Because in this case the Navi Operator actually assaults the other one directly and makes it with the most sensible option in those circumstances available. If Lan's PET now has a protective case that can protect it from water, you can be sure it's also a solid bludgeoning tool now

I cannot express how happy seeing an adult human person struggle with the alpha fight made me feel validated. This was my first Battle network game as a kid and I was OBSESSED. However I had very little internet access so every dumb puzzle or problem I simply had to figure out myself. I remember getting to Bass and it was the most impossible boss fight of my little 8 year old life. I remember screaming so loud out of joy that my parents thought I hurt myself…… And then came Alpha. I was so shocked not just that Bass wasn’t the final boss but that the next one was SO MUCH HARDER. I died almost instantly. And literally broke down crying when it made me fight Bass again. It was so hard. And I was 8 so I didn’t even think about going back to an old save. (Could you even do that on the gba?) So I just fought these final two boss battles. Again and again. FOR MONTHS. I’d grind multiple hours a day until eventually beating Bass became second nature to my little 8 year old hands. And then just throw myself against alpha again and again and again. And also because I was 8 I had no idea how to use more than the most basic of program advances and memory setups. So I basically had to learn how to defeat alpha with JUST THE BUSTER and drag the fight out over hours at a time. Until eventually after 3 months of attempts, I finally beat it. You’ve validated one of the smallest but biggest victories of my life. Thank you so much for this series.

This just shows that kids are tougher than modern game companies think. I agree that these battles were extremely difficult but when we finally won it felt like a huge accomplishment. Same with Pokémon games, I had fun figuring out all the puzzles and stuff. Nowadays game companies are like "Oh kids aren't smart or patient enough for that kinda thing so we didn't bother adding it." Ya know it was quite an unexpected challenge to make such a story heavy game into a watchable video. There are so many scenes that I felt worked better if I didn't talk over them, but since there's no voice acting, that results in a lot of "rapid beeping text" for you guys to read. I feel I left too many cutscenes in and probably could have cut some out but I like to let media speak for itself whenever I can. This is the most narrative based Battle Network though, so future parts should be lighter on cutscenes. Sorry if all the narration breaks for cutscenes were annoying to you.

I prefer your style of letting cutscenes play out uninterrupted. Sometimes when people make reviews they either forget stuff in cutscenes or intentionally leave things out to try to make their point usually that something is better or worse than it is. By just showing the scenes by themselves it does what you said it it dose. It let's the game speak for itself allowing the audience to come to their own conclusion of how they feel about the scene and your criticism of it.

I was pretty sure Megaman.EXE survived being absorbed by Alpha. The reason Lan was alone for many months without a Navi is because his Father spent so long digging through Alphas data to find him. Recall Grandpa Dr.Hikari's digitized self survived in Alpha by being within a hidden room. Megaman.EXE was found in said room and was recovered and returned during the post credits. Also I don't think Megaman.EXE can be backed up like most Navi's in the first place. He was created with Hubs DNA and is special enough that most current Navis are far outclassed by him so not sure Dr.Hikari can just create a V2 so easily.

16:49 *laughs in Bug Style* Speaking of.... 27:53 Bug Style is RIDICULOUSLY strong, and not just because of the two programs you get. The wiki says the bugs you get are mostly negative, the wiki is wrong. You ALWAYS get 3, 2 are positive, 1 is negative. And the positives are broken, things like starting with 10 chips available or maxed buster stats. BugStop is great, and if you want to use certain Giga chips in the postgame you actually need to have DarkLicense installed, but the style itself is also no joke. If Custom weren't so broken Bug might be the strongest style.
@archmagemc35613 жыл бұрын
Honestly outside of pvp Bug is the best style even above custom since you can run Folderback, Dark Aura, Sanctuary in Blue verison and basically be immortal to any attack under 300, or if they can't crack panels, any attack under 600. White is more aggressive with Serenade and Navi Recycle. The trick here is you limit the opponent to a single tile with area grabs/ext, then serenade with a navi + chip, followed by Navi Recycle. This gives you double seranade chips who hit for like 1500 each.
@zachelkins12293 жыл бұрын
Also getting out bug is pretty easy, get the buster bug that produces rock cube on a charge shot and then air shot/guts punch them for 200 dmg each

@@zachelkins1229 What I did was bug SneakRun and farmed Mettaurs for bugfrags and guard chips. In this game only, you can buy back as many copies of a chip from Higsby's ordering service as you have spent on the chip traders. Guard is the cheapest at 100z, so you end up spending only 300-1000z per random chip. This gets really broken once you have access to Undernet 2's GMD.
@Zmeeed01 Жыл бұрын
The random movement bug made me ditch BugStyle as soon as I got the DarkLicense program purely for the completionism sake. It's way too annoying to deal with and I'm not the type of person to reset-scum fights until I get the actually desired effects. BugStop has a humongous size and it doesn't affect the random bugs you start with in the BugStyle, I never found placing it in NaviCust worth for anything other than removing 50% max health penalty from the HubBatch, and DarkLicense is overrated when Hole * exists and you will obtain it even before getting your first GigaChip that requires it (not to mention, DarkMan, a hilariously OP NaviChip to rival PlantMan, creates one as a side effect). Honestly, if the movement bug pulled you left/right, if the game explicitly told you which exact positive and negative side effects you will have in a fight in the custom screen before turn 1, and if I didn't get it all the fucking time I try to run HubBatch without BugStop, I wouldn't be so harsh on this dice roll of a style

There's actually a bit more to Bug Style: although you may get bugs in Battle, you may also start the battle with positive effects, such as a 100 HP Barrier, invincibility like with the Fanfare chip, or get 10 available chips from the get go. It's essentially a gamble: you may start a battle with a huge advantage, or a miserable disadvantage. Great video series I must say: as a new fan of Battle Network it's a blast seeing KZbin content on the BN games. Next stop is... going to be a tough one. Oh, and since you're most likely playing only one version of each game,I hope that you'll go with Team Colonel for 5, as Colonel and its navigator are important characters in BN6 (kind of a big oversight to make version exclusive characters plot relevant in the next game).

I'm gonna be doing Red Sun for two reasons. One is that I just like the Souls more (Lan's friends Souls are cool). One more thing, I think I know why the guts style function doesn't work for you on an Xbox controller. Namely the analog buttons on the Xbox controller have a significantly longer throw (movement range) than the digital buttons on the real GBA or DS. This means that what feel like fast taps to you on the controller are actually fairly long presses (the button is"on" from about 25% of the way down, to 75% of the way back up, so over twice as long as a fast tap on the original hardware). I can confirm that the machine gun features of guts style work as advertised on original hardware. If I misunderstood how the Xbox controller interprets button presses on PC, then it's still the control throw, but instead of the long presses, is the time between presses that is longer than on genuine hardware.
@linhero7977 ай бұрын
There is also likely made worse by the fact that emulation of the GBA on non original hardware comes with inherent input delay. Only a frame or two's worth depending on a lot of factors, which typically does not matter for most things, but it's enough to compound these sorts of issues.
@agenthappypotato8683 жыл бұрын
As someone who got into Mega Man through the Battle Network series, it's so nice to see people still talking about it. As someone who gets finicky about minmaxing characters in an RPG, the ease and freedom of customization when it comes to your chip folder and programs is a lot of fun. Something I've found interesting about Mamoru is that since he has Serenade's insignia on his wheelchair, it's implied that either Mamoru is Serenade's operator, or he inherited Serenade from his dad. In that sense, Mamoru talking about how the Net helps put people on a more level playing field really hits different. It's funny that you mention getting Wood Shield style grinding before Alpha. A common strategy for Alpha I've seen is equipping a Wood style, installing the Undersht program, and adding the GrassStg chip to your folder (possibly set it as your regular chip too). Since you recover health on grass panels if you use Wood Style, plus Undersht's ability to keep you from dying as long as you have 1 HP, you pretty much become immortal so long as you have at least one grass panel to stand on. Looking forward to the rest of this retrospective!

I remember back in 2003 when I had Battle Network 1, 2 and 3 Blue, I was deeply worried that the ending of Battle Network 3 meant there wouldn't be a Battle Network 4. But on the day I found out Battle Network 4 got released in Japan, I was so relieved, and the following year later in 2004... well, words aren't enough to describe how happy I felt when I got Battle Network 4 Red Sun.

I am just confused as to how you couldn't get the Guts Style machine gun not to work, to be fair you have to press it rapidly VERY fast in order to activate it, it is however very consistent. Arguably the best style to get in my opinion. Just my too cents AMAZING showcase of the game, and I didn't think it could still get this popular in 2021.

Interesting note about KingMan's "Plan B" move: it actually has a different effect based on how you're fighting. Are you pushing his Pawns back so they can't hit you? He summons a second Knight. Sticking to the back row to avoid the Pawns? He tosses down an AreaGrab and moves the Pawns forward. You keep breaking his chess pieces? Here, have a Rook with a mountain of health to block your shots.

One way to easily deal with Alphas is with guts Style. I have no idea why it never worked for you during your playthrough. I used the machine gun function of that style constantly as a kid. it absolutely rips through Alphas body making the fight a lot easier. in order to activate the machine gun function of guts Style you have to rapidly tap the Buster button for a bit before it starts up. The style also gives you access to the programs break buster and break charge. These will give you the ability to destroy Alphas arms for a little while as well as other previously impenetrable defenses like Drillman's drills, metalmen's gears, Kingman's chess pieces, Met's helmet, puffball's mask, you can even destroy those yoyo viruses yo-yos causing them to panic for a bit. Next to custom Style I find gut Style to be one of the more useful styles offensively. If you ever revisit the game I hope you have better luck with this style.

I think ge mentioned playing with an Xbox controller of some variety at some point in the video. If he's emulating the game on a PC, then this makes sense and is likely a fault with the controller's buttons. Xbox controllers are known to have pressure sensitive face buttons, which might result in some odd input errors.

The music is great, the art is great, the battle mechanics are varied and fun, and the overall atmosphere was fantastic. Fun fact about the navi customizer bugs there are actually two types of Buster bugs that can occur that are arguably positives rather than negatives. - *Guard/Shield Buster* Instead of releasing a buster shot when you fire you'll release the guard Shield from your buster. This works just like the chip so you can use it to repeatedly reflect damage back at the enemy in the form of shock waves. You can use the shield about 30 or so times before it starts working properly again. You can achieve the bug that causes this soon after receiving the navi customizer. As long as there aren't holes are broken panels on the battlefield this is a completely viable option for a buster replacement. this works pretty well even in the late game and post game since the damage is dictated by the enemies attack. I personally prefer using this bug over most of what Shield Style has to offer in terms of programs - *Squirt Gun Buster* Instead of Megaman releasing a proper charge shot he will shoot out sad dribble of water that spills out onto the ground soon after coming out of the Buster. Despite its pathetic animation this actually a 100 damage water attack if you could land it on an enemy. only hitting the panel directly in front of Megaman, this basically just makes this a sword in terms of range. I don't know how early in the game you can achieve this bug but it can be a nice substitute if you don't like your current charge shot or need a high-power water attack but don't care to change styles. That and it's a fun way of ruining a Boss's Day by more or less pissing on them. Rip FlameMan.EXE

On my last playthrough of the game I had actually discovered the shield bug for the first time and it not only blew my mind, but it also made me appreciate just how good of a customization system the Navi Customizer is and why not many other RPG's come close to matching the depth and experimentation it provided. I've been coming back to the games in this series a LOT over the past year or two and never before has my love and appreciation grown for a series more after not touching them for so long.

I'm so glad I found this video. I love the Megaman Battle Network series to a crisp, and MMBN 3 is definitely my favorite, on the account that it's the only game in the series that actually made me care about the story and characters. The introduction of Chisao, the exploration of Eugene's relationship with his father, the meeting of Mamoru and the connection Megaman made with him. So many characters came out stronger from this story. To beat Kingman easily, before the tournament begins, you can actually talk to Cossak and he sells you a program that lets you break heavy defense with charged shots, along with a code to bypass the color restriction. This is critical to get rid of Kingman's pawns and also Metalman's gears. Drillman can be dealt with using a deck full of wide swords like firesword, elecsword, etc. Just step aside as he charges you and slash his body as he passes by. No problem there. Easy S rank. Aren't you going to mention that Dex stopped the bubble tank by chucking a massive boulder on top of it? That's the signature move of the Robot Master Guts Man! It's too awesome to ignore! And yeah, Alpha. Thankfully I had a Guts Style when I reached it, and I was able to get the machine gun going more consistently. That thing melts through Alpha's slime like a hot knife through butter.

I don't know if it was mentioned in any other comments, but many of the Number Trader codes that aren't in any of the games were actually from the NT Warrior Anime. This is actually part of the reason that the localizations of the games (especially BN4) were so rushed, they had to localize them in time with the anime, and Viz/Kids WB were trying to pump out the anime on weekly basis. I'm pretty sure some of the episodes with BN4 Number trader codes actually aired in the US months before BN4 even came out.

I hadn't played megaman battle network since I was a child in the late 2000s and early 2010s. I grew up in the perfect time where Gameboy advance cartridges were only a few dollars, and somehow, almost as if it was a miracle, every single battle network game showed up in the Gameboy advance box that my local GameStop had designated. It was a particular gamestop my twin brother and I made my parents drive to consistently. We beat just about every battle network game there was (minus network transmission for the GameCube, because oh my god that one's impossible), and your reviews made me remember so many wonderful memories I had with my twin bother. Maybe it was the fact that Lan and Hub are twins that their story in Battle Network 3 resonated with us as children. But we were, and remain megaman nerds to this day, so even though we weren't able to gain access to every single older megaman game, we watched a LOT of early 2000s and early 2010s youtube let's plays of megaman games to piece together the lore and the parallels to the battle network and starforce games. Which is why, for example, when Bass showed up, we flipped out!! Anyway, I'm writing this to say that my brother and I are now new members of the job industry, and the wonderful memories of megaman battle network games will never fade from either of us. Your videos reminded me of how much those games meant to me. Your commentary is really funny, and your editing is really smooth! Your work is wonderful! Also (I don't know why I'm admitting this in a KZbin comment of all things), Battle Network 3's ending didn't even make me tear up as a child, but now, as a 22 year old adult, I ended up sobbing for a good few minutes reading the dialogue in the cutscenes before your final statement in your video! This really is a great series of reviews and you've made such a polished video. Thank you so much for this! I hope you're able to keep making videos far into the future! I'll be subscribed for more!!

Not necessarily for review purposes (though wouldn't complain lol), but I would definitely recommend playing (or downloading save states/using AR codes for) the postgame of bn3. Especially for a gba game, there's a surprising amount of postgame content (few new areas, new bosses, tougher versions of old bosses, + other challenge type objectives). Imo it's the best postgame in the bn series, and out of the (many) games I've played over the years, bn3 is one of the few that I completed 100%.

@@theArchive1O @25:14 It's called a Style Change. Basically it gives you a random element (Red = Fire, Green = Grass, Yellow = Electric, Blue = Water) and a specific style depending on how you are playing. For example if I mainly use my buster to fight enemies, I will get the Guts Style (The big arm one) and the element will be randomly given to me. If I mainly use battle chips I would get the Custom Style (his backpack grows lmao) It was a really fun system to play around with because they gave you an elemental advantage that was so much fun to experiment around with.
