Now Jordan and Amber are listening to him too. Freaky! It's so sad that he continues his tour with a broken hip. He was on stage performing with a broken hip! Who does that? He didn't want to disappoint his fans so he kept taking more pain medicine and sleep medicine. He also had emphysema so more medicine. I think he also had a heart condition too. Sucks! from songfacts - Petty never said what this song is about, but there are two common interpretations. It could be about Petty's divorce from his wife Jane, which happened a year before this was recorded. Another possibility is that it is about marijuana, as "Mary Jane" is slang for pot and the lyrics refer to killing the pain, which the drug is known for. Mike Campbell offered this explanation: "My take on it is it can be whatever you want it to be. A lot of people think it's a drug reference, and if that's what you want to think, it very well could be, but it could also just be a goodbye love song."
@johnl65773 жыл бұрын
Or its both... alot of people use substances to dull the pain of life including breakups.. but eventually they have to deal with reality. So to overcome the breakup you have to overcome the pain and quit using the things you used to dull the pain.

I’ve said this before: videos (regardless of how artful or interesting) are marketing tools to promote songs, and they often don’t have anything to do with the song’s meaning. Personally, I think it’s best to hear a song first before watching the video so that the video doesn’t overshadow the song.

That's a blanket statement that isn't always true but in this case it holds up...a lot of Rock and Roll music videos during the early MTV era should be seen after the live version or studio version of the songs are listened to...these music videos are completely different products than the songs. In this case I feel it takes away from the music for the first time listener.

Jay, you are correct about this being a later song. It was released in 1993, while the group had been going strong since the 1970s. As creepy as the video is, it won the 1994 MTV Video Music Award for Best Male Video. An unusual fact about this song is that it was first released as a cut on Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers Greatest Hits album. It was something of a treat for the fans to buy a greatest hits album and find that it included an entirely new song, and it was not misplaced as the song quickly made the charts and did become a big hit. So many great songs from Tom Petty, both solo and with the Heartbreakers, but one of my favorites is "Running Down a Dream".

No words strong enough to express how much I love this song. It's even better when you match the lyrics and the video together and realize the relationship between the two characters.

Since you both love harmonica I’d say try Blues Traveler. The lead singer is an amazing harmonica player. Start with Runaround.

He’s an American Icon and legend who has worked with pretty much everyone at one time or another. AND you wouldn’t know it from looking at him but he didn’t take shit from no one ESPECIALLY record labels and producers. He even fought other artists fight against their labels. He definitely did things his way or no way.

This is definitely my favorite Tom Petty song! And that's saying a lot considering how many great songs there are in his catalog. I first heard the song as I was pulling into my parking spot at work one morning. He tells such great stories in his songs, so I just sat in my car and listened until the end. I wasn't disappointed! Don't Come Around Here No More is another great song, with another great style, and I know Amber will love The Waiting! Love you guys! 💖🎸

I listened to Tom Petty in high school. When my 2 daughters were in middle school all they asked for from Santa was Tom Petty cd’s. I think that says a lot about his music. RIP Tom

Tom Petty is a legend. It hit me really hard when he died; I grew up with his music. Caught me off guard. I don't think I've ever been driving without a Tom Petty song playing at some point, whether I put it on or the DJ picked it out. You should check out "American Girl." And if you want some great live Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, check out the Superbowl 42 halftime show. Best halftime show ever.

Suggestion for The Traveling Wilburys “Handle With Care” “Not Alone Anymore”…It’s a supergroup consisting of George Harrison (The Beatles), Bob Dylan, Tom Petty, Roy Orbison, and Jeff Lynne (ELO).
