Funny story about Petty in his hometown of Gainesville FL. When I was a student at UF Tom used to play Duffy's bar every weekend. In the 70's bands were usually paid in cash at closing time. I was sitting at the bar talking to the owner Duffy when Petty came up to get the bands money. When he left Duffy commented, "That boy can't sing a lick but he sure draws a crowd".....I always wondered if Duffy changed his mind once Petty hit the big time.

One of my favorite Tom Petty tunes. I love the harmonica as I am a harmonica player, self taught. Jay if you want to learn to play, start out simple with "little ditties" like "when the saints go marching in" those type of simple songs so you get a feel of the notes, then start playing to music. My theory is, you're breathing anyway so why not breath into a harmonica. Whenever I want to shut out the world I pick up my harmonica. Just do it! 😊

The funniest case that I can think of of someone's censoring Tom Petty, has to be MTV and his video last dance With Mary Jane. In the song he's talking about marijuana, but MTV wouldn't let him make a video about marijuana, so in what I consider to be a Sly bit of revenge, if you actually watch the video you will see he turned last dance with Mary Jane into a video about necrophilia. In the video he plays a worker at a funeral parlor, who becomes obsessed with this girl who died, and so he dresses her up in a wedding dress and dances around with her in the video. THAT MTV played!!

Yeah, Tom sings his face off when he wants to. He was a kind, thoughtful, genuine, brilliant soul. One of the few artists who remained relevant and active to the end of a long career. His catalog is deep, rich, and varied, with frequent collaborations. I personally love Rebels, for its observation of doomed romanticism: "Hey hey hey, I was born a rebel Down in Dixie, on a Sunday morning With one foot in the grave, and one foot on the pedal I was born a rebel"

In 2008 Mudcrutch reunited and did limited city tour and swung by my hometown Ventura, CA. How we were freaking out he was coming to play at our small theatre venue. And got to stand right in front of the man and look up at him on that stage. Played the bass in the band. And shared lead vocals with the lead guitarists guy you're talking about.
